Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best sealer to use on concrete?

Because unsealed concrete is porous, it readily absorbs liquids, leading to unsightly stains and freeze-and-thaw cycle damage. For this reason, it’s important to seal concrete that will see spills or outdoor weather.

The best option for garage floors and other high-traffic areas is epoxy, which forms a hard and extremely durable surface on top of concrete. Epoxy, acrylic, and polishes are often used on indoor floors, while acrylic-resin sealers and reactive penetrating sealers are used on outdoor surfaces to repel water and salt. Locate a concrete contractor in your area to help find the best solution.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

Is it better to stain or paint concrete?

A concrete paint cover is typically opaque and covers up the color of the concrete. This means it provides significant protection to the concrete below. However, if it is improperly applied or subjected to heavy traffic, a painted concrete floor is likely to chip and peel.

Epoxy and staining are two types of concrete floor sealer. Epoxy is a more durable but often more expensive option than a concrete stain. Epoxy forms a protective layer, while concrete stain is more decorative and requires more maintenance. Because epoxy can be more expensive than concrete stain, it is best used in high-traffic areas or in applications where low maintenance is desired.

A concrete stain, on the other hand, is quick to apply and can show off the textures of the concrete, but it does not provide a high degree of protection for the concrete against spills, salt, water and other contaminants. Staining concrete generally requires a dust mop, a pH-neutral cleaner and water to clean, while epoxy can cause resin buildup that necessitates the use of special detergents.

Find a concrete contractor near you for help selecting the right floor concrete sealer.

What can concrete contractors do?

Concrete contractors can build foundations, structures, driveways, concrete storm drains, raise or level concrete patios and much more. They can handle every step of the process, starting with framing the mold that the concrete is poured into. They then cut, assemble and tie together the rebar, giving the concrete its tensile strength. Finally, they pour the concrete in, mixing and conditioning it to ensure it cures properly. They will also take steps to ensure that no air pockets are trapped within it.

If you have a project that requires the help of a concrete contractor, reach out to one today to get a price estimate.

What is the best finish for concrete floors?

The best finish for concrete floors depends on your personal taste. An acid stain is a bold, varied look with lots of texture and the potential for earthy tones and a natural stone appearance. A water-based stain might not last as long as an acid stain, but it gives you the choice of many different colors. Epoxy is great for high-traffic areas, kitchens, bathrooms, basements and garages. It provides a glossy, damage-resistant, non-slip coating on your concrete floors. To find out which finish is the best for your concrete floors, contact a concrete contractor near you.

Does a concrete contractor need to enter my home?

If the concrete job is 100% outdoors, a concrete contractor will not need to enter your home. However, certain jobs may require a professional to enter your home, including pouring a slab floor or laying a foundation for a fireplace or other heavy object.

If a contractor needs to see the inside of your home during the consultation, you can ask to video chat and share photos through email and text messages to reduce exposure. Put a plan in place as you talk to local concrete contractors.

Do concrete contractors offer remote or virtual services?

Concrete contractors must be present to pour concrete. If you come across a profile that states the concrete contractor is offering remote services, message the contractor to see what those services include.

In any case, contact local concrete contractors to ask whether they can perform the job under current guidelines. You can also discuss other strategies to stay safe, like virtual payments and video consultations.

How can I find out if a concrete contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

In order to know if a concrete contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider in your city or state, you’ll need to visit your city or state’s official government website.

Another helpful resource is CISA’s website, which includes a guide to Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 that provides information on a national level. This guideline presents 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors, which can help in determining whether concrete contractors are currently considered essential service providers. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

I had a great experience with Watson Concrete. Bruce was on time, provided a written bid within a day, was on time and in constant contact with me about this project. He did an incredible job and I plan on using him again for future projects and refer to my friends and family. Thumbtack is fortunate to have a contractor of this quality on its team. Bravo Watson Concrete--you earned this stellar review!

As a plumber who does underground work for remodels regularly its very important to have a reliable concrete contractor. Samson and Sons showed up the same day I called them. They showed up the next morning and got this job done. Very professional. Would use again

I hired Jared to install stamped concrete in my backyard. Unlike other contractors I had reached out to Jared was very responsive and provided me with the best estimate, stamped design options and colors. He was easy to work with and finished the job in a timely manner. I highly recommend him!

My experience with 123 Flooring Experts was less than ideal, unfortunately. In the initial meeting, I asked him repeatedly if he could level the bumpy areas, and he said yes. However, after paying the deposit, I learned he had never leveled a concrete floor and planned to use some felt to level it. I had to hire another contractor to level the floor, and the process was inefficient. Because it was such a hassle to use 2 contractors for 1 small job, we agreed to part ways halfway through the project.

My husband and I are extremely pleased with the complex concrete project Dan completed for us (new backyard stamped concrete patio, new driveway and addressing difficult sloping/water drainage issues). Everything about the experience was fantastic- Dan met with us for over an hour to discuss the project in detail, suggesting design ideas and solutions to our water drainage issues. His quote was detailed and competitive, making us feel at ease from the start. He and his crew showed up on time the first day and carefully but quickly demoed our deck and existing concrete. On subsequent days, Dan showed up early and stayed until dark. He involved both my husband and/or I in the finalization of layout and technical plans. His team worked extremely hard and complete this large project in four days. We could not be happier with the result, our patio is beautiful and our driveway looks great. Our neighbor is a general contractor and was impressed with their work ethic and attention to detail. Overall, we would highly recommend Dan for any complex concrete project.

After getting bids to widen our driveway from multiple contractors, my wife and I chose Dan based on his quick response and fair price. Dan was quick to communicate all scheduling, and his team was great to have around (we even had them clear a spot in our backyard using the mini ex). They prepped the area over a few days, and were quick to pour/complete the project once concrete was available (there is currently a shortage, which Dan was great in constantly updating us on status). He even helped me with two sprinkler heads while stopping by one afternoon. The pour looks great, and we will certainly be contacting Dan in the future for any needs regarding concrete, landscaping, sprinklers, etc.

This was the worst experience of my life dealing with a contractor. Ben poured my small patio in early July. I contacted him 20 days after he poured it as there was a crack that went all across the patio and I wanted him to look at it and repair it. He said he would stop by and seal it. He never showed up. I contacted him again less than two weeks later that the crack was getting wider and that there was another crack going all the way across the other way too. He said it was a concrete issue and it would take a while to get the concrete company to test it. I asked him to do something in the meantime. He did nothing. I contacted him again less than two weeks later that the concrete was now crumbling along the crack and I wanted a plan on what would be done. He said he was going out of for two weeks. My brother then contacted him and he finally came to take a look at it on 9.15 stating again he would seal it or replace it if it got worse in a year or “something.” When he didn’t send the written plan summary as I had asked, I had had enough. I told him I wanted it pulled out and removed and my money back so I could hire someone that could pour it appropriately. He said no. He’s not doing anything. He then told me it was my responsibility to pay for the concrete that he picked up because he “only pours it.” I didn’t hire the concrete maker, I hired him. That included supplies and labor. The concrete company told me they did not have me on file owing them anything and that it’s the responsibility of the individual that orders it and picks it up to pay for it. I have no idea if he did pay for it? Not only was this terrible, but he cut my Google fiber line, my sprinkler line and knocked a large whole in my garage excavating. I thought maybe it was just a bad day and paid to have it all repaired. That should have been a sure sign that Ben was not qualified to do the work. I have learned my lesson on being to kind. I love Thumbtack. I have hired qualified individuals from this site. Completely disappointed and sickened that I am out over 4K on a 196 sq ft patio on shoddy work from a dishonest contractor. So much for improving the value of my home. Divorced mom raising my son alone just trying to get ahead. A kind and understanding person and I got screwed. So sad!

Kyle and Royal K Construction have been great to work with. His family has done concrete work for generations, so they really know their stuff. They poured our addition foundation and garage and we liked their work so much that we had them do our driveway and back patio(stamped) as well. Kyle and his team are always there bright and early and work very hard. Their prices are fair and they do quality work. They are easy to communicate with and were always patient in answering our many questions. In doing our home remodel they were the only contractor who were always there, on time, when they said they would be there. I would highly recommend Royal K Construction for their quality of work, professionalism, and communication.

In short, Bruce Watson is a amazing company to work with. They were responsive and came out for a quote right away. Their attention to detail was head and shoulders above the other contractors I had come quote the same job. The house is new to me so I knew nothing about the property. They took notice of how the sprinkler/drip system was laid out, rerouted it, and put conduit in place to make future maintenance a breeze. They made sure not to disturb the garden and even took the time to save as much mulch from the pad locations as they could. They also modified the rain gutter runoff with materials that matched my existing setup to avoid any pooling. The concrete work was top notch. They matched my existing driveway no problem an blended it right into the sidewalk and patio they poured. Their price isnt bargain basement but it also wasnt anywhere near the highest. I would say their price is extremely fair for the service that I received.

Dan is amazing. I have a long driveway with my garage about the same level of my sidewalk. Water was draining from my property - it would sit on the driveway and eventually get into my home. We were having serious problems for several years. I had several contractors give me quotes, and none of them could tell me that they would get the water to leave my property. I was advised to install giant french drains that would be costly and wouldn't take the water from my property. When Dan came to give me a quote, I knew he'd be able to drain the water. He was creative enough and had the technical skill and ability to get the water out to the sidewalk. It wasn't as simple as just grading the driveway away from the garage - he kept the water from my house and window wells, and directed it down the driveway to the sidewalk - he did it! For the first time since I've owned this home, the water actually drains away! He also installed a cinder-block wall that I am very pleased with. We wanted some removable poles for a net, and he had no problem with that either. He was very responsive to all of my concerns, and gave me great value. Dan has a great crew as well. They worked up to 12 hours a day and were always friendly, cheerful and happy - a great presence at our home where we had 3 small children stuck at home because of the pandemic. I was glad to have them there. Dan demolished and removed everything, installed a wall, a long driveway, and walk, within a matter of days, ahead of schedule! And it all looks fantastic! I recommend Dan to anyone with concrete needs - he's the only person I'll call if I need any concrete work in the future. Nick
