Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

After some difficult interactions with another flooring contractor, Tevita was a nice change of pace. He was easy going and understanding about our need to get the flooring done ASAP. He was able to provide a quote and installation in the same day. The floors look great and would recommend him to anyone else. Plan to use him in the future.

These guys did a great job! They did repairs to a 70 year old oak floor, installed new flooring and wove it into the old floor, seamlessly. Then they refinished the whole thing. Gorgeous finished result. Gordon is a consummate professional, on time, easy to work with and gave a great price. I’d absolutely hire him again and refer him to my friends.

We had a great experience with Floor Coverings International! Our consultant, Aaron, worked closely with us to find the best plan to replace the flooring in a small, but complicated area of the house. The team helped us feel really comfortable about the process, and the job was done very well, and in the expected time frame. I would recommend them highly!

Showed up to consultation on time but didn’t seem interested in helping me at all. Felt like the person was paid by the hour and just going through the motions. Didn’t point out concerns that other consultants pointed out (such as slopes in the tiling or the fact that some of the basement floor was higher than the connecting room’s floor and that I may need a divider or spectate styles to make it look nice). When I asked to see samples of flooring styles he told me that he didn’t have any and that I should just come visit the showroom. I chose a competitor.

These guys are amazing! They took 100 year old floors that had been painted many times and made them look incredible. Installed new hardwood in the kitchen, worked around the painters schedule and fit us in between jobs because they knew we had a tight schedule. They are polite, professional and punctual. Their communication is excellent. They far exceed their closest competition. There is no reason to look for other flooring companies to consider. These guys are by far the best in Utah. Do yourself a favor and contact them today.

Fred and the team arrived as promised and finished much faster than I expected. That didn’t affect quality though, everything is perfect and my wife and I are so happy with our new floors!

Huge holes in my floor for over 3 months!! I'm going to have to have another company finish my floor and then take Utah Flooring and Design to court to get my floor finished. BEWARE. I was quoted for new flooring in the main level with 5 vents inlaid into the flooring. This was on Feb 11. As of the writing of this review, May 27th I still have giant holes in every room. They first cut the holes for the vents wrong, they then cut them too big and had to replace planks. Then their installer showed up with mismatched vents, that are supposed to be fit tongue and groove; He showed me that they couldn't install them right, told me that they were a different wood and a different color advised me not to install them. Told me he was leaving the company and that everyone in the office thought these vents were a joke and had instructed him to "Just make it work". After that the project manager told me that color matching was a long process and that he was working on it. Then he ghosted me. I then called and asked to speak to the owner, never called me back. They finally sent me a survey asking how my experience went. After my one-star review the woman in charge of PR texted me and told me she would try and get it resolved. An hour later she came back and said there was nothing they could do. I haven't had any follow up since. if it were only the fact that they never called or showed when they said they would or if they had forgotten to order all the materials for installer, of if their installer left the company halfway through the job. I probably could have gone for 2 or 3 stars. But this was the trifecta, poor service, poor craftsmanship and employees who don't give a damn.

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND Severe lack of attention to detail in almost every aspect of this project from major things like breaking up and removing flooring they were told not to remove (which released asbestos dust into the house which resulting in time delays, major stress, and additional labor on the part of the owner of the house to get the asbestos cleaned and tested by an industrial hygienist); hundreds, yes HUNDREDS, of black marks, scapes, and dents left on the walls that were literally JUST freshly painted prior to hiring International Floor Coverings; to minor things like leaving lights turned on after they left in the evening and doors being left unlocked after their teams left for the night. They company did pay for the asbestos to be tested (the first test to determine what measures needed to be taken before the flooring was installed). Luckily the air quality test came back negative, but the dust sample test was positive for asbestos. I had to personally buy a HEPA shopvac and other cleaning supplies and spend many hours personally cleaning and washing every surface of the home after Floor Coverings International's above mentioned major screw up. This was a very VERY FRUSTRATING experience for me and while the Project Manager (aka proclaimed President of Floor Coverings International in the area) first mentioned the entire thing was his fault and he would take 100% financial measures to make it right, 1 week later he said they would only pay for 50% of the followup test to make sure the home didn't test positive for asbestos after the project was completed. VERY DISHONEST. The contractors they brought in to prep and also the contractors brought in to do the new flooring did a horrendous job at taking care of the walls, baseboards, and cabinets. This text box doesn't even have enough space for me to describe the entirety of how frustrating working with them was so I digress with: WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

Jaime the owner was really great when I first talked to him and honestly why I chose to work with his company. I’ve been trying to renovate my condo and the communication factor with other designers and contractors had been a nightmare. Megan was wonderful with emailing me back with my every question and concern, because at that point I needed my hand held a little with anything renovation. The day before it all took place, Jake the installer dropped off materials and I was a little scared to find out only one person was doing my floors, so I had a mini panic attack but Jaime called me to reassure me that Jake was good at what he does and would handle everything. I left my house and wished for the best, but when I came back periodically throughout the day I was shocked at how fast Jake moved. He had all the carpet ripped up and removed in the first hour or so, and had nearly all the flooring down IN THE FIRST DAY. And it was quality as well. Second day he finished up. And he came back for an hour on the 3rd day to put on finishing touches with pieces he had to order and grab from the flooring store. We gave him a key and he was in and out. Nothing shady, very trustworthy and I wasn’t scared about leaving the house to run errands because we just moved all our stuff across the country and had a lot to do. I’ve already recommended these guys to friends and I would use them again for floors. Fair prices, didn’t try and charge me for moving a single bed, most companies charge you a crazy fee or fee per item moved, trustworthy installers, great communication, super quick installation. Great company! Oh and my floors look amazing. They don’t do baseboards because that’s an art in its own and Jaime was up front about that to begin with, so I just called a baseboard installation company that specializes in them and got a smokin deal. Wood Floor Pros is that little flooring company that does a really awesome job without trying to rob you and slam you with fees. Simple and easy

Alex did beautiful work. Installed our laminate flooring in less than 8 hours even with some tricky issues with a 120 year old house. He creatively addressed some transitions and I couldn’t be happier with the quality of his work.

They gave me an estimate, took a deposit, and scheduled an installation. THE DAY BEFORE the installation, they called to tell me they didn't have the laminate. Meanwhile, I'd already torn up all my carpet to be ready for the installation, so I had to live on plywood floors with holes in them until I could get another installer. Utah Flooring & Design did finally refund my money, claiming the distributor sold the product out from under them, but it took them a month to refund it. They were all really pleasant and responsive, but obviously the project didn't work out to my satisfaction.

I had a few laminate pieces that were lifting due to water damage. I have been searching for someone to do this project, however it was too small for a lot of other flooring companies and one came out for a bid and never gave me the bid. F looring not only took it but since a skilled professional to come to the project which took amazingly an hour. I was told every step of the way what they were going to do which made me feel very comfortable. I will be using them in the future as we go to flooring experts! I highly recommend them. Very flexible and extremely knowledgeable and a great value!
