John is a professional and did excellent work for me. First he replaced a kitchen faucet, then leanking hot water heater valve, then re-cabled hot water heater wires that had been incorrectly cabled. I would definitely hire him again for any kind of handyman work.

Mr Domenech was great! I had a sink that was giving me a hard time and was leaking from more than 1 spot. 360 Handyman had a technician at my house in just a few hours. He was clean, professional, and the work was done well. I would recommend this company to others in the future.

Chris is an incredible handyman. He assembled my IKEA dresser and tv stand very quickly and efficiently! He was even kind enough to fix my roommate's IKEA dresser that she had begun to put together but some of the pieces had broken. It was no problem for Chris! Within 15 minutes he had it all fixed up. I highly recommend Chris and will definitely be going to him again the next time I need furniture assembled or something fixed!

Mr. Boiko tiled our kitchen backsplash with a difficult mosaic tile. The results were amazing. He is by far the best tiler we have ever hired. He is a very pleasant, dedicated worker, wanting to do his best. A superior work ethic. You will be glad you hired him, trust me.

I’ve had mediocre to bad experiences with handymen before, so I didn’t know what to expect this time, but Joseph has been a pleasure to work with in every possible way. He communicates very well, is prompt, and is very reasonable in his pricing. But more important than all of that is his skill. Joseph is extremely capable and knowledgeable in the wide variety of tasks one calls on a handyman for, he is VERY precise and thorough in his work, and he goes above and beyond to make sure the job is perfect- not only to your expectations, but to his skilled eye. He is great at keeping the customer informed about the project’s progress & details, and he is scrupulous about cleanup when he finishes. We have a house that needs much work, and he has been generous (and spot on right) with his advice about projects still needing to be done & possible ways to go with design & remodel choices. I have health issues that make my ability to schedule ANYTHING with 100% certainty nearly impossible, and I’ve particularly appreciated Joseph’s understanding & flexibility when I’ve needed to re-schedule. It’s just another reason why I would give Joseph ten stars if I could, & why I recommend him highly & unconditionally.

I had searched on Thumbtack for a handyman who could repair a deck. I received a response from the owner "Howard" within minutes of posting the request. He booked the appointment for the very next day, had the quote to me that evening and the job was scheduled and completed within 3 days of the quote. Wow, how is that for responsiveness. Howard was very professional and knowledgeable in his field. Definitely not a hard sell, his prices were reasonable and he was willing to negotiate. He repaired and stained my deck and it looks fabulous! He did an excellent job and I will be using him to make some stairs and powerwash/paint my fence. I highly recommend Howard and his company Bullen Brothers. His business card will be readily accessible for all my future repair needs. Thank you so much Howard I truly appreciate you!

It's been awesome so far. I just bought a home and was in need of an affordable painter who would be able to paint my place in 4 days. The entire 1559 sq foot home. I had gotten a response about a week before I closed and compared his price to another quote. He had given me a ball park quote at first and once he looked at the place he had given me an even better quote , well in my price range. He also allowed me to pick my paint online and went and got it for the project, so far he's been moving very fast and everything looks great. It's been a great experience so far! So glad I found his company and service! Would recommend him to anyone and he's not even finished yet! I'm excited to see everything finished, I'll post pics if I can.

Andrew showed up as scheduled with positive attitude ready to work. He went over everything with me and made sure he took care of everything. He even fixed my outside faucet free of charge. He discovered carpenter ants in my front door framing that will end up saving me thousands down the road. I’ll be using Andrew for all my other work I need done.

Luis was fantastic. He was courteous, on time and figured out where the water leak was coming from in our house. He only figured out the main issue of the leak, but he was quick in fixing the issue. He got the supplies, came the next day and took care of everything. Very nice person, honest and very fair. He just moved to RVA from Georgia, that's why he has few reviews. But he is a great handyman, and also changed our light bulbs that were hard for us to get to. Will definitely use again for future needs around the house. 5 stars all the way.

Drew did very good tile work on my kitchen backsplash. In getting to know him, I found out he is quite a handyman, with various skills. He is a excellent carpenter, does good drywall work, and just about anything you need help with. I ended up hiring him to installing new quarter round on our flooring and patching some holes from leaks and he did excellent drywall work. Would use him again for future work! He's a nice, hard working guy too.

Only one call and Daniel was on the job! He quickly diagnosed the issue with my washing machine after it stopped spinning. He used a dependable parts suppliers so even my old machine, which was used when I received it, far outlived its warranty. I recommend Daniel if you are searching for timely, dependable and quality service.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

      • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
      • Toilet replacement: $75.
      • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
      • Faucet replacement: $125.
      • Garbage disposal: $75.

      Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
