Patrick and his crew did an exceptional job refinishing and staining the 50-year old hardwood floor in my parents' house. They take great pride in their work, which was obvious from both their professional and conscientious demeanor before and during the work and the beautiful result after the work was completed. They explain what they are going to do and answer any questions you may have. I learned about flooring from them. I am planning to have them come back to re-do the kitchen linoleum flooring and re-carpet the den when we get to that point in the project. I highly recommend PM Services for all your flooring needs!

Oscar and his team did an outstanding job upgrading our basement in Fairfax, VA. Now our basement looks completely new. Oscar and his team removed old wooden panels and put in new dry walls in the basement. They removed old carpet and replaced it with the laminate flooring in the family room and the office. In addition, they painted the family room and the office. Every step of the project, Oscar kept us informed on what to expect next. The project was completed on time as promised. Oscar worked very hard to include scope and the details of the work to be performed, schedule and the cost in the contract before the work began The contract was very clear. If we have to hire Oscar, we will do it without any hesitation.

I hired Nilto to "finish" a room in my basement which we were turning into a gym. He framed half of a wall, hung drywall on two of the walls and the ceiling, installed an outlet, built a small custom railing, painted the drywall, and installed rubber flooring. Nilto took time to discuss the project and make recommendations based on his expertise. He even came back to our house to discuss the project with my wife and ensure she was comfortable with the plan. The project took a few days longer than expected (mostly due to uncontrollable things like drying plaster...etc) but was still finished in a reasonable timeframe. I had to point out a number of things that needed to be fixed (small things like some screws were sticking out, a few anchors in our concrete walls needed to be removed, the baseboards were a bit crooked), but Nilto took care of them quickly and send pictures to me throughout the project to be sure I was happy prior to returning home from work for the day. Overall, the price was excellent and at that price, I am very happy with the work Nilto did.

I had an excellent experience with these guys. Tony spent a lot of time talking me through a tricky project in a house I thought I was going to buy. In the end I bought another home that just needed some carpet replaced in the bedroom. He even came out to measure the rooms on a Sunday since that was when the sellers were able to let us in and since I needed the carpet done the day after closing. Sometimes he gets big jobs that book him up for a few days to weeks but as long as he is free, he will do what he can to make sure you are taken care of. The work was top notch and he guarantees his installation. I will use him again for my next flooring job!

We were looking for someone to hang wallpaper, but it turns out that Dave and his team can take care of a wide variety of home services, and they are fabulous! He works with you in advance to ensure that he knows what you want and can custom-tailor a solution to your needs. He is reliable, he shows up when he says he will, and his work is meticulously done. He installed vinyl flooring, cabinets, door locks, a dog door, a garage door opener, and baby gates for us as well as doing some miscellaneous carpentry, and everything was done perfectly. We will have him back soon to hang the wallpaper and custom-build bookcases because we know we can trust his work. Highly recommend!

Borelli Renovations is an excellent renovation company. Recently They completed our kitchen by installing new granite tops, stainless steel sink, faucet, and new vinyl floor planking. I now have a completely new looking kitchen and a floor that is absolutely silent. Additionally they renovated one of my master bath and a half bath by adding new tile flooring, a new vanity, and lights. Their attention to detail is spectacular. They are efficient knowledgeable and creative.

The job included a full condo remodel of 2 bathrooms. 2 bedrooms, kitchen , painting entire home, replacing carpet with vinyl flooring , designing modern flush doors, designing a fireplace , replacing all electric outlets and switches etc. ECR helped transformed my home to a modern contemporary condo and were very professional and meticulous in getting the job done. Mr Cirilo and his team are also very responsive to requests, keep to schedule and offer such excellent customer service and warranty for all services rendered. I plan to use this company again for any other interior design needs I have in the future as I've worked with several contractors in the DMV area in the past few years but ECR is the best at what they do in my opinion!

Brenco performed major renovations on our townhouse this year. Brent met with me and provided me with a detailed estimate, which he stuck to during the job. His crew was timely and performed all the work very professionally. They demo'd my old kitchen and replaced the flooring, cabinets, and granite counters. They also did hardwood and laminate on my floors and stairs in the house. Their plumbing and electrical contractors were timely and did great work also. I have referred a couple of my friends to Brenco, and strongly recommend you give them a shot too.

DW Lloyd Home Services were a life saver. We had contracted with a big box store to install laminate in our basement. Due to the product no being delivered in time we had to cancle that install. We were on a time crunch because all of our household goods were set to be delivered within the next few days and we really didn't want to reschedule because we were living in an empty house! I contacted this company after a recommendation from a neighbor at 7:30 am and David and Phillip were at my door at 10:30 to review the scope of work. My floors were prepped and laminate was installed within a few days on a holiday! They were truly amazing and professional! Thanks DW Lloyed Home Services for your hard work. My floors look amazing!

We had Baker's Home Services at our home to tackle a basement ceiling repair and vinyl plank flooring installation due to water damage. Baker's was out within a day for a quote and gave me a realistic timeframe to start and finish work. They did a fantastic job with the ceiling and floor in the basement. Baker's minded every detail and made some great suggestions for small additions to make my basement seem like a new room. We were so happy with their work we hired them back to paint/restore our bathroom and apply a new coat of paint to our son's room. Baker suggested the colors and we couldn't be happier. Go with Baker's for a job done right at a fair price.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
