Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a roofer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a roofer, choose virtual platforms like video chats instead of face-to-face consultations. When the roofer is working on your roof, avoid any physical contact, sanitize all involved spaces and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

We had a few estimates for our leaking issues. All we got back were the cost for TPO roofing. Only Master Roofing gave us the specific reasons of why we got leaking problems. They did repairs on our roof and replaced new gutter properly to guide the overflowing rain with 1/4 cost of TPO. Master roofing does TPO roofing as well, but they didn’t recommend us to have TPO roof. We are so grateful for their honesty and professionalism to take care of our issues what we really need. You can count on their punctuality and responsibilities too! Thank you Luis and your team!

Steve responded right away to my SOS call when my roof leaked. He found the problem checked the area for further damage and fixed it same day! The leak was caused my some bad workmanship from the HVAC installer and he took the photos I needed to send to them. While he was out I had him clean my roof too (might as well) and they did a great job!

Working with this team was great, we thought we had a much bigger roofing issue on our hands, but they did a thorough inspection, showed us pictures and video of what they uncovered, and actually recommended a much smaller and less costly solution for our issue. We appreciated their thoroughness, communication and high quality work.

Polar Bear Energy (PBE) have been excellent throughout the process. I tendered 3 quotes through Thumbtack, and Nate from PBE was the only one who gave me a detailed quote explaining what he believed would need to be done in addition to replacing the shingles, and issues about clean up as house in trees, rather than just sending numbers. He included moisture levels of surrounding areas with photos and his quote was at a price point that was what I had expected. Further than that though, trying to arrange a project like this remotely from Canada in C-19 times, could have been a nightmare, but between Nate's personal approach (ie using that 'old fashioned' method of communicating, the phone!) meant I knew what, when and who I was dealing with. Also, on the day of the install, I received updates from the manager Joe. He also took the initiative to add a vent for the upstairs bathroom, as he noticed it was without, in case I decided to add a fan sometime in the future. I had not even thought about this, but hugely impressed by his initiative and done without additional charge. There were a couple of issues with the roof vents that honestly I wouldn't have necessarily have noticed, but Joe brought to my attention. Mistakes happen, that's life, but it is the manner in which they are resolved that counts to me. He brought it up, and has rectified it. My neighbour did the inspection for me and in his words, 'It is a very, very, very good job!' from the neatness of the shingles to the immaculately cleared up site. (House in amongst trees as I said, so not an easy sweep round.) Polar Bear Energy are a very professional outfit, from start to finish. I have been hugely impressed and very satisfied. Nate & Joe thank you, you have reinstalled my confidence in contractors. I would definitely recommend them.
