I had a very positive experience - Jarrod was excellent. He mounted my TV above the fireplace for a very reasonable price and nailed it. The job required custom work (frame work for the fireplace niche) and he was methodical, detailed, thorough, listened to what I had in mind and kept me informed every step of the way. He was very responsive from the start to finish - a true professional who knew what he was doing. He also helped me with cable management and the end result was a nice clean look. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Thank you Jarrod!

Gary is a great guy. He is very knowledgeable and has a great attitude and work ethic. He has the ability to change things up if needed or desired as the work progresses to make sure the customer is getting exactly what they want. Gary built a large deck with a partial roof and exposed trellis with benches and privacy walls for us. He made quick work of it and it looks great. We would recommend Hartloff Property Restoration for your next project. Jeff and Toni Bradshaw

My wife and I are very happy with the the very large deck job that Steve just completed. He finished the job in a timely fashion and always left the work site neat during construction. His carpentry ability is in a word is "superb!" Our job had some unanticipated intricacies that Steve took in stride and worked out a solution. We ended up with a beautiful deck that I am sure that we will enjoy for years to come. We found that Steve is also fair and a man of his word. We highly recommend anyone hiring him.

Jose did a great job texturing the walls in my powder room after I removed the wallpaper. He also covered up two big damage spots in the wall and you couldn’t even tell it had been repaired. He was personable and right on time!

Yuri (and his sons) are hard workers and wonderful at what they do. We hired Kamp Construction to demo and rebuild a fence as well as put in a new deck. Very pleased with both.

The two men told me what they were going to do, and why. They let me see the bare floor of bathroom above this ceiling, to prove there was no mold or other damage. After installing and mudding the edges, we both found the identical paint in the deck shed, so used that for a few coats, then it was heat-blown dry. The ceiling is perfect. You can not tell that it had ever been damaged. I will definitely use them again.

I hired R&R hardscapes to build a complex deck with a roof and finished underneath of the deck equipped with lighting and electrical outlets. When I approached Ricardo, owner of R&R and let him know what my idea was he gave me great advise on what materials to use to fit into my budget. One of my biggest challenges in living in the northwest with a deck was having to replace deck boards all the time, even when treated. Ricardo told me about brazillian hard woods and the benefits of this product. Mind you that I was trying to find the right contractor foe this deck for 2 years and out of the 10 contractors I spoke with not a single one told me about brazillian iron woods, probably because of how expensive the product was and how much time it takes to install. These hardwoods last 75+ years. Ricardo was able to come up with a plan for my dream to have this extension added to my house and fit it into my budget. Most contractors didn't want to touch the project because of how complex it was. Ricardo has a real sense for what I wanted to create for my family so that I can enjoy it in all seasons. His first thing was safety. I didn't want a bunch of cross boards hindering my view both on the top of the deck and under the deck. He poored nearly 2000 pounds of concrete under each support pole and doubled the size of the footings to make it super stable, enough to put 2 elephants on my 350 square foot deck. Let me tell you that my deck is the talk of the neighborhood. Everyone wants to come over and hang out. Another thing a really appreciate about Ricardo is he always picks up the phone to talk to you when you have questions and I had a lot of questions. He did such a great job on my deck that I contracted him to do my pavers under the deck and souronding areas and my fence. Check out the pictures.

Thank you everyone at Gafco for our beautiful new deck. I love all the hard work and attention to detail. I especially love the awesome gate you added at the end, absolutely fabulous the attention you took keeping in mind my pups lack of eyesight. The gate is awesome, I love the slow shutting feature so it won't slam on his head hurting him and that he can't push open the gate getting out unnoticed.

Cornerstone Services Group has successfully completed 5 different jobs on properties that I own over the past 3 years, projects that have ranged from $500 to $60K in scope. The first was a significant remodel of the addition and deck. The second project was a full gut of an old rental. My experience with Jeanne and Cornerstone Services Group has been consistent across the spectrum of projects that we have done together--work is consistently delivered on time and on budget, and to say that Jeanne goes the extra mile to ensure that you are satisfied with every detail would be an understatement. I recommend Cornerstone Services Group unreservedly for jobs both big and small.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
