Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

I would hesitate before recommending SeaTown to anyone. While their technicians do appear to be knowledgeable, their prices are the highest in the city. I had four other electricians come over to bid on the same work and the other bids came in at HALF what SeaTown bid. Their technician also almost scared us into replacing our entire electrician panel, which the other 4 electricians (including a master electrician with 30+ years of experience) said was unnecessary. SeaTown’s prices are too high and their scare tactics are indeed scary. I’d recommend going with a smaller business, and one that is more realistic with their pricing.

Electrician came out. Seemed knowledgeable, but he never sent me a quote. I think he was pretty busy. I hired someone not from Thumbtack.

Hired for a simple job (installing a waterproof outlet). They responded within a few hours on the weekend with a lower price than most, scheduled a few days out, arrived on time, and finished in less than an hour. As painless as an electrician experience can be.

We've hired Bixno twice and Nolan has been professional and great to work with both times. The first he hung a TV for us and did the job quickly and well, even happily allowing our son to bother him with questions. The second time we hired him to install Smart Switches and he ran into some issues. Rather than giving up, he spent more than an hour trying to remedy the situation before determining that we needed an electrician, not a handyman. He apologized for being unable to complete the job and refused to charge us. We offered to at least pay SOMETHING for his time and he was adamant that he wouldn't take anything. We had an electrician come the next day and it turned out we needed new wires run into a couple of the switch boxes, which explained why Nolan was struggling and told us he was right - we needed an electrician not a handyman. We'd gladly hire Nolan again.

This electrician came out and eventually sent me a proposal/ quote. However, I asked to clarify a few areas. I did not receive a response so I ended up hiring someone else in a similar price range. But, he seemed knowledgeable and provided a reasonable quote.

Everyone from Custom Electrical was great to work with. I had two light fixtures installed; the quote process was easy and the electricians arrived right on time, worked carefully, and gave some good lighting advice along the way. I would definitely use Custom Electrical again for similar work!

Seatown Electric replaced the old knob & tube wiring in my 1930 home with up to date wiring. I chose them because the guy they sent to do the quote was very thorough, unscrewing all of the face plates in the house to look for additional areas of knob & tube. He found several extra circuits of knob and tube and built them into the estimate. If we had gone with another electrician they would have found the extra circuits part way through, and so we would not have had a realistic price expectation from the start. The two electricians who did the work were very thorough and courteous, and cleaned up after themselves each evening so that our house wasn't a wreck for the whole week. This made it a lot more pleasant to live through a re-wiring with two young children. I was very happy with my experience, and will plan to use Seatown Electric again in the future.

Received a well-priced offer to perform the work during the on-site estimation visit. When I scheduled with SeaTown, they showed up on time and completed the work in 2-hrs as estimated. They added additional outlets to the exterior from of home and moved an outlet in the back yard to the exterior of our detached garage. Will definitely hire again for any electrical work. They're timeliness, professionalism, quality and cost made them much better than the 4 other electricians I connected with during this project.

Travis was great. He came on time, was quick and did a nice clean job of installing a whole-house surge protector for me, which I provided. It was meant to be mounted inside the breaker box, but I had an in-wall breaker box so there was no room. But that did not phase Travis, he installed it outside the box with a nice clean junction box for the wiring. Great electrician and I would definitely hire again. Nice to have a good experience with a contractor. Thanks Travis!

Totally satisfied. They arrived the next day (on short notice). My circuit breaker blew and would not reset - the one controlling the kitchen range. Besides replacing the breaker (which was truly shot) they diagnosed the source of the problem - the range was shorting out - it sparked after replacing the breaker. Their diagnosis was correct - eventually the whole range had to be replaced but that's Sears' fault - a whole 'nother sad story. In summary - competent electrician who knows his stuff and talked straight. Gotta like that. It was a "small" job but it was a big deal to us.

We hired SeaTown electric to take down a track light and replace it with a place to install a new pendant fixture. The electrician they had come to our house was timely, knowledgeable and easy to work with. The bad review is due to pricing. The work itself only took about 45 minutes and I was charged $648. For less than an hours worth of work for a easily completed job, this price is criminal. I called to inquire if the bill was a mistake and left some feedback and was never responded too. Do not work with SeaTown Electric if you want a fair price.

Great operations and execution. Don is a great electrician. I've hired several electricians for remodels and punch list electrical projects over the years and Custom Electrical is very good. Our project required installation of a ChargePoint 240 hardwired residential charger in our garage. I spoke with them prior to coming out and they had some great suggestions over the phone. Don came out the next day to evaluate the project and provided an estimate onsite. They use an application that calculates materials, labor, and level of effort, so it is a fixed price quote that they show you and follow up with an email. They were not the lowest price, but definitely had the best ideas. I wanted to run two or three 240 lines to our garage to future proof the electrical needs, in case we have more than one electric car. Rather than guessing where to put extra 240 lines and outlets, they added a sub-panel in the garage that will handle the future capacity we'll need. That will make it easy and inexpensive to add new chargers from the sub panel going forward. Don, who bid the work also did the work. Its always great when the bidder is the same person who does the work. The quality of work in terms of installing the panel, hiding the 240 conduit, and rerouting some breakers was excellent. We received other bids and most electricians can run a single 240 40-amp line from a main panel in the house to the garage for $1,000 to $1,200. (I'm sure some even do it for less than that.) They typically bid the job by the number of feet they need to run a line from panel to charger. Our project cost $2,700, which was probably in the above average category for the scope, yet we received top quality work, so totally worth it. The ChargePoint with 25ft cable added another $615 via Amazon.

It was a great experience. They responded my work request quickly. Doe to our work/travel schedule, the work needed to be done quickly. They accommodated our work on the next business day. The electrician, Alex, came on time, even giving us a head up for ETA. He was courteous, explained things in laymen’s terms so that I can understand, and he did a quality job. Each time we have some work done with our house, we find that our house was practically built by an amateur, and so many weird things are behind the walls. That was the case for this work, and I’m sure it took longer than initially anticipated because of it. But they honored the initial quote of the price, which was reasonable to begin with. All together, I am happy with their work, and I highly recommend them.
