Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best appliance repair technician in Seattle?

The best way to find the best appliance repair technicians in Seattle is through an online search. Doing so allows you to quickly compare pros while you check out their ratings, customer reviews and customer photos of completed jobs.

Read the reviews carefully and pay attention to customer feedback that addresses the pros’ quality of work, pricing and overall professionalism. Try to find customers’ before-and-after photos of appliances you need to be repaired, which may include refrigerators, vacuums, dishwashers, dryers, washing machines, ovens and more.

You should also check to see if the pros have any licenses, certificates or other credentials. For example, you can visit the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries website to verify a contractor. You can also ask the potential pros to provide you with an overview of their credentials and how to verify them.

Once you have several pros who seem like a good fit, contact them to receive free estimates. Choose your pro after getting multiple quotes.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

To find out how much it will cost to repair your appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

To help you determine if your fridge should be repaired or replaced, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians in your area.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

How can I find out if an appliance repairman or specialist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential provider varies based on state, city and local guidelines. Visit the official government website of your state or city to see which services are considered an essential in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an appliance specialist need to enter my home?

If the faulty appliance is located in your home (e.g., a washing machine, refrigerator, toilet, dishwasher, etc.), the appliance repairman will most likely need to come inside to complete their work. However, if your appliance is outdoors (e.g., a grill, outdoor kitchen, etc.), it may be possible for them to complete the work without entering your home and with limited person-to-person contact.

I had struggled to find an appliance repair company that repairs Samsung refrigerators and services Seattle. When I connected with Pro Appliance Repair via Thumbtack, and they immediately responded in the affirmative and scheduled a date and time I was thrilled. The young man who repaired my Samsung was on time (both visits), polite, knowledgeable and got the job done perfectly. And the price of the repair was less than I had imagined, although extensive -- two visits combined took almost 3 hours. I would use Pro Appliance Repair again in a heartbeat!

We reached out to Pro Appliance Repair after another repair company never showed and the price was lower than the original quote from the other repair company and they did the repair the same day. Will definitely use them again!

Boris was great, he was very communicative before and during the process. He got parts and fixed our appliance quickly, even with a holiday weekend in between. I would recommend him to anyone needing appliances serviced or repaired.

I contacted Faruk from our winter home in Mexico, when I received a call from the tenants in our rental home in Seattle and my usual appliance repair person was not available. Faruk responded immediately, and he determined what was needed, ordered the part and had the appliance working again in no time. Our tenants were very happy, and we have added Faruk to our contacts for all of our future appliance repair needs.

I was having issues with my washer and dryer unit. Pro appliance repair was very responsive and advised me ahead of time that the repair would be more expensive than purchasing a new washer and dryer. I was so grateful for their help and their desire to save me money.

I can't say enough about Greenstate. I oversee several properties throughout the state of Washington. They have done around a dozen different properties for me and have always done an excellent job. They provide an estimate and photos showing the exact issues with appliances. Once job is approved, they complete within 1 business day and the work is always efficient. I haven't had a single issue with a repair they have done. They also cover virtually any appliance or brand. Highly recommend using this company and looking forward to continuing my relationship with them for future appliance needs.

My Technician was Stanislav and he was very professional, courteous, did exceptional work. Showed me the part that he was replacing including the broken part and was very timely I finishing. The estimate was included in the total cost of repair which was $379.85 to replace the water pump on my LG washer. I would recommend them again and use their service if I need an appliance repair.

Very prompt and honest. Al understands appliances and is quick with repairs. Will surely recommend. Diagnostic charges are a bit higher than others but we got honest diagnosis and did not have to pay anything on top of the visit fee. We will hire him again without a doubt.

Great communication! Very quick and responsive. Diagnosed the cause of our fridge’s issue in a matter of minutes and ordered replacement parts. He came back a few day’s later once they arrived and despite it being a major repair, had the work done within 90 minutes. Our fridge is working perfectly again. It’s very hard to find a reliable and well reviewed appliance repair service and we’re really glad to have found Faruk/ Greenstate!

David was great! He came the same day and fixed the clogged drain in the dishwasher and diagnosed the ice maker problem. He will come back in 3 days to install a new ice maker once the part is in! Nice dealing with a single person rather than a big company! I will call David the next time I have an appliance repair!

he's the best. broiler element in my oven died. I'm cooking holiday dinner so was very worried. Mikhail went out of his way to get it repaired. If you need someone reliable to fix your appliance be sure to call him. Trust me that's what I'll do. I can't thank you enough Mikhail.

John did a great job of taking apart my Dryer and figuring out the issue. He offered the option to order replacement parts and come back to fix it. After discussing the pros and cons, I elected not to have it repaired and just get a new Dryer. He cleaned the dryer and put everything back the way it was. I would definitely hire him again for any future appliance repairs. He was diligent, professional, and fair minded as he charged just for the initial hour even though the time went well over. Thanks John!

Great service! Repair was attempted within 24 hours of initial contact, Vlad responded within minutes of my reaching out to him. When it was clear that our dryer was not able to be repaired, we were charged the quoted amount. After talking further, we purchased a spare, used dryer from Vlad for a very reasonable price. We will use SPS Appliance in the future, but hope we don't have to! Thanks Vlad for the pleasant experience and help getting our laundry back up and running for a price that was within our small budget!

Team Appliance Repair…It should be ZERO stars…🚫 ⭐️ All the technician did was come.. turn the switch on broken washer, and say it was a Motherboard issue. He could not even be bothered to open up the washer to investigate!!! He just wanted the $69 diagnostic fee … for doing NOTHING… saying had to get off to CHURCH of all places!!! He knew it was a very old machine… but came, did no diagnostic, collected the $ and left in a hurry!!! 👎🏼👎🏼 It felt very dishonest. I deserve to have my money refunded!!!

Michael repaired our dryer BUT he happily did some related things that made the customer experience superb. For instance he helped me put a leak pan under the washer and part of the shutoff valves on the hot and cold spigots cheerfully. He was neat and didn’t mind my offer to be his helper. He got the job done on time and on budget. My wife also poached his talent and asked him to inspect a wine refrigerator on the fritz. Michael is our new family appliance specialist! We loved his service and you will too.

I highly recommend Vlad. I contacted him because a handyman had diagnosed an issue with our dishwasher but rightly didn’t feel he should try to fix it himself (one of the things I liked about that handyman!). So I contacted Vlad to make the fix. He found that there was another issue as well (another reason I’m glad the handyman didn’t attempt this) and made a fair quote for parts and repair. Saw him first on a Monday and it was fixed this Friday. He also gave us tips on how to keep our dishwasher running more smoothly in the future. I would love to never have to use him again, but appliances don’t last forever and the next time I need someone I will certainly contact him first!

UPDATED: these guys are a complete SCAM! See update below... I gave them the model of the dryer and they came out only to tell me that they don't have and can't get the basic parts needed (roller wheels) to repair it. Complete waste of time and money. They just told me my dryer was old and should be replaced and left with my money for diagnostic. TRY SOMEONE ELSE! Update: After they left I opened up the dryer and did my own diagnostic. Clearly they didn't bother to even find the issue, which was actually just a retaining pin on the blower wheel. I went to a local parts store and bought the part. While I was there I asked if OEM parts for my dryer are available. YES, of course. (part of their scam is telling you that they can only use OEM parts to honor their warranty and that they are not available for your appliance, bla bla, bla. Liars!) I told the people at the parts store about the two Russian speaking boys who showed up in a compact car with barely any tools and no parts. I told them that they insisted that the dryer is too old and they can't even get parts for it. The people behind the counter asked who the company was. I told them Appliance Forces and the names of the boys and they all laughed. Yeah, they just come and collect the diagnostic fee and leave. They don't want to do the work. Then the boys me they will 'cut me a deal' and give me a first responder discount (shameful to use first responders in their scam, but they do) and so they scammed me for only $70 instead of $85. Wow, thanks! I would have been happy to pay someone to come and actually fix the dryer, but instead, I got some lazy, Russian scam artist, liars in my house.

I got a response from this repair man right away. He quoted me a flat fee which I think was reasonable. He checked every connection and parts of my dryer, which means he literally dismantled my dryer. The part to be replaced was $270.00, so I decided not to replace and just buy a new one. He was thorough, and seems to know what he was doing. He was also polite and explained to me what was the problem. He was supposed to come back the next day to finalize and figure out if he can still fix my dryer. The first day he came at 3 PM and left at 7:30 pm. He called the next day if he can come at 8pm. I work very early , so I told him that will be too late, because I got to bed early. So we set it up for the day after. But when he called, he would like to come in at 7:30. I said that was still too late. Then we set it up for the Saturday at 9 AM. He did not showed up, not even a call. My dryer was dismantled, so I asked my son to put it together. But in the process, the dryer tilted over and cracked the front door. So I just bought a new one. I have not received the delivery yet, but I was told the appliance should be put together before the delivery person remove it for the safety of the delivery people. I paid this repair man $125.00, but he left a mess instead of fixing it. I would have appreciated it if he could have come back and put the dryer together.
