Chef James had great communication, provided a customized menu, and worked with us to facilitate our allotted budget for our wedding reception. Unfortunately, the reception hall we booked did not allow for outside caterers. Based off of his professionalism, I would contact Chef James again for any future needs. As mentioned before, Chef James provided a custom menu with phenomenal descriptions of the food giving us a clear idea of what to anticipate.

Frankies catered for my brother's wedding and EVERYONE was extremely impressed with the food! That was the talk of the entire church and friends and family for months! The service was quick, paid attention to detail (because my family is very picky and we want things done the way we want it done VERY WELL), and Frankies did a wonderful job giving us the quality food at a very affordable price (almost 60% less that other offers). I HIGHLY recommend Frankies!

They did an outstanding job for our wedding! We have a bunch of food allergies in our family (Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, and Tree Nuts) and they were able to make the most delicious cupcakes ever! No one could believe they were allergy friendly, and people said they were the best cupcakes they had ever had!

Loulou catered our wedding this past summer and I can't say enough great things about working with her. Our reception was at an outdoor barn venue without any kitchen or prep space. She assembled a team that created the most beautiful, delicious menu. We had FOUR entree choices, including halibut, as a plated meal for 200 guests. We did a charcuterie station as well as 4 different passed appetizers. The salad and entrees were presented with such finesse and in a very timely manner. All ingredients were local which we loved. We've had so many people tell us at the wedding as well as weeks later how amazing our wedding food was. My wedding planner even commented that it was the best wedding meal she's ever tasted. Loulou's planning was extremely thorough and left us feeling relaxed and confident going into the wedding day. She's very open to the client's ideas and opinions and balances this well with providing her expertise. I would recommend Loulou catering any and all special events!

Recently I had an impromptu wedding shower for my niece whose fiance was being sent to Afghanistan earlier than expected. I wanted it to be special and fun, but wasn't sure what to do. I had been to a street festival last summer where Hard Wood Cafe was selling their food and just loved their "Go Hog Wild" pulled pork sandwich - and don't get me started on their pulled pork nachos!!!.Really delicious food. I looked them up online hoping they catered-and they do! I started telling the owner Debbie about what I was doing and how much I wanted this to be a really fun and special event. During our conversation I told her how much I loved their cute little gypsy wagon and how we had first tried their delicious food at the street fair. After deciding on my menu, Debbie told me that the truck was available too! I couldn't believe it!!! Our event was a complete success. Everyone there kept commenting on how delicious the food was, and they all loved the truck too. My niece was brought to tears when she saw all of us. Having the truck there was icing on the cake for our party. I really felt like I had hit a home run for my sweet niece. And guess what? We lucked in with weather too - our party was on the 61 degree day that broke an over 100 year record! The food was great and these owners really know how to make an event special. Thank you Debbie & Craig! - Saundra D., Mequon, WI

We used The Fast Foodie for our August wedding and we couldn't have been happier! We contacted Jackie while we were still in the process of booking our venue and immediately knew that we HAD to have her and her food at our wedding. She did an amazing job of making sure our guests got food quickly and recommended the perfect portion sizes. Everyone raved about the food., Best wedding food and a very memorable experience!!

Moxie Girl was wonderful! We used them for both our catering for our wedding in addition to the bar service. Jodi and Ryanleigh are wonderful to work with, and the prices are an extreme value for the service and food you get. We had 300+ guests who raved about the dinner, most saying it was the best wedding food they have ever had. In addition, the bar service was fantastic and they were open to everything that we wanted for our big day. It is 3+ weeks after our wedding day, and we still hear the reviews from our family and friends. Great job- and thanks for making our day great!

I can highly recommend David and Guy and Ono Kine Grindz for your wedding reception or any and all catering needs - big or small. David and Guy did a FANTABULOUS JOB catering our wedding. They provided not only excellent food for our guests on August 30th 2014, but they gave the gift of that Hawaiian family love to everyone. From the first meeting to go over the menu and our budget with Guy, to the day of the event -- everything went so smoothly. David and Guy were both so wonderful in how they responded to my numerous phone calls with changes to the menu, special dietary requests, modifications to the final head count and my own wedding jitters, David even made me sit down and relax and have a cup of Kona coffee with him. He reassured me that everything was going to be great and not to worry. And it was! It was! What caterer does that for a client? We served succulent Kalua Pig -- Hawaiian pulled BBQ pork, Char Siu chicken -- delectable tangy grilled boneless thighs, purple rice, kim chee, savory and lightly spiced macaroni salad, and a delicious carrot and pineapple slaw, plus a lovely vegetarian pasta salad for our vegetarian guests. They even made a lovely grilled seitan burger with mango salsa for a vegan friend. It smelled so good and tasted fabulous. Service was buffet style and yet the servers went above and beyond, clearing tables, asking people if they could bring them anything else. People are still talking about how awesome the food was, and the best thing about it is we still eat Ono Kine Grindz food and knowing we can anytime we want is such a gift! And we love stopping in to say hello to David and Guy and the rest of the team at OKG. It's so much more than just the food.

I am so happy I used Thumbtack to find Anna!!! I decided that I wanted to be fancy-schmancy and have people walk around serve guests glasses of champagne during my wedding cocktail hour that took place in May of this year. I have no experience in event planning, so I really didn't know the best way to set this up. Thankfully, Anna was so helpful through everything. She completely understood what I was looking for, and I could not have asked for a better outcome. It's very refreshing to work with people who "just get it" and have fun, positive attitude. After we met in person the week before the wedding, I knew I had nothing to worry about. With minimal direction, she knew exactly what to do. Anna and her team were professional, polite, and so easy to work with. I highly recommend hiring Creative Catering, and if I ever need event catering in the future I know who to call!! Thank you, thank you!!!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
