Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

I had tile backsplash work done in my kitchen and a tile accent wall in my dining area completed. It looks beautiful! Peter's attention to detail and his quality work should be noted as one of the best I've ever worked with. Peter listened to what my needs were and what my budget was and gave an honest and fair recommendation and price for the project. Not only is his work done by perfection but he is totally a genuine and honest person. Someone you can trust in your home. I plan to have him work on another project soon!! I'd be happy to refer him to any of my friends or family. Lori Hayes Shorewood, WI

Rick and his brother did an incredible job from the hanging cement board, waterproofing, and tiling the entire bathroom. His 30 years of experience speaks for itself, no one could do a better job. We have had other industry professionals ask for his number due to the superb craftsmanship.

Nick was very responsive and knowledgeable. He successfully installed tiles in our shower that were not the exact size. He made it work and there is no indication of repair. Nick was respectful of our space and cleaned up when he finished the project. His fee was fair. I would definitely bring him back!

Greg did a lot of work in my house - replaced almost 1,000 square feet of hardwood flooring with porcelain tile, refaced a fireplace, tiled a kitchen backsplash and other smaller jobs. Anything I asked Greg to do, he knew how to do it and was right on it. I felt comfortable enough to leave him a key to the house so he could work when I wasn't home. He's not only professional and skilled, he's also a really good person who wants his customers to be happy and he'll do anything to get to that point. I would hire him again in a heartbeat and am already planning on having him do some outside work in the Spring.

Had a few people prior to Saul look at our bathroom for quotes and he was the most competitive price wise, and seemed like he really wanted to help us get the job done. Also, he is very responsive. We had a few questions while shopping picking out tile, and he replied right of way! He came out on a Friday with his crew, removed all the old tile, and reframed part of our rotten out window. Took about 3 days to finish, and he even stayed late the last day to get the job done. It was very much appreciated! Saul and his crew were very curtious, respectful of our home, and showed up every day on time! If you're looking for a very honest and hard working crew look now further. Saul and his crew will get the job done for you and give you a great price. We are loving our new bathroom!!

Inititally Peter bid on a job to tile our kitchen floor, but after giving us his background and full credentials (unsolicited at our first meeting, which was greatly appreciated!), we asked him to bid on our whole kitchen and bathroom job - painting cabinets, trim, doors, walls, tiling floor, installing back splash and a few other little jobs along the way that went with it. His estimate was VERY fair and detailed, and he provided a lot of explanation behind the costs, so nothing was hidden. We knew from that point on that Peter is an honest, hard working guy that we needed to hire. And we are soo glad we did! He was extremely meticulous, enthusiastic, professional, flexible (we often times had a house full of kids and he wasn't phased by it), and involved. He cleaned up every night after a long day of work so we were able to use our space during the remodel, and he shared with us along the way what was going to happen next. His estimate said he would finish in 3 weeks and he did!!! And we did add on a few additional tasks from the initial estimate but he still finished on time and the work is beautiful. He takes such pride in his work and it shows. The quality is outstanding and I cannot say enough positive things about Peter and his work. We have already passed his name along to two friends, and plan to use him again for any and all of our home remodels/updates (which may happen sooner than we planned after seeing how great our new kitchen and bathroom look!!). If you want an honest, communicative, hard worker with high quality results, Peter Halper is your guy!!! We consider ourselves truly blessed to have met him!
