Lynn with Angelight Therapy is a wonderful woman! I hired her to do readings at my Halloween Party & it was a huge hit! As the host of the party, everyone was excited to tell me a bit about their readings & I heard nothing but amazing things. So many of my guests were shocked with how spot on her readings were & they all left excited to see what their near future holds for them. Lynn was very flexible with me & gladly stayed the extra hour I asked her to, due to a long line of guests who still eagerly wanted a reading. She did not pack up until she made sure every last person had a reading. She even spent extra time with my father, who had a lot of questions, which meant a lot to me. I definitely recommend Angelight Therapy for anyone looking for some insight.

Greetings! I am not accustomed to leaving reviews for "services rendered" - but I feel compelled to share my heartfelt feedback on the treatment that I've received at Coronado Hypnotherapy. I sought out hypnotherapy to quit smoking. It seemed impossible, but I'd been smoking for 25 years. Not always a lot, but always a little ... and over the years, more and MORE. I'd never considered hypnosis before; it seemed "too far out there" for me. But I mentioned the idea to my husband. Surprise! Like me, he also remembered a "long-ago-friend" for whom hypnosis had worked. I decided to research hypnotherapists on the internet, and I found a number of providers in the Valley. Yet most of the hypnotherapists that I "found" weren't compelling enough for me to take a "risk" and reach out for help ... UNTIL: (1) Coronado Hypnotherapy's website was so professional; (2) Bob Cable's services were highly rated by his clients; and (3) Fees for treatment were very reasonable. After several more weeks of trying to quit smoking (and continuing to fail), I called Coronado Hypnotherapy. Bob promptly returned my phone message and succinctly answered all of my questions. It quickly became obvious that I was speaking to someone who was passionate - and a little humorous - in his approach to a problem that had me tangled up in knots. He immediately put me at ease. I scheduled an appointment with Bob based on that phone conversation. I figured that I had nothing to lose. In retrospect, I had no idea how much I had to gain. Bob follows an innovative, established, and highly successful protocol for stopping smoking - for good! By "good," I mean both consciously and subconsciously. That way, giving up smoking will actually STICK. I should know: I've “paused” my smoking numerous times before. But this time, and by following Bob's program and guidance, I am QUITTING smoking! Bob's patience, professionalism, and compassion have also allowed me to “open up” to him (not my normal approach, I've never been one for "therapy") and address situations/behaviors/responses that were affecting ALL areas of my life. I wasn't dealing with my thoughts and feelings. But unbeknownst to me, my body and mind WERE ... much to the detriment of my physical and mental health. In closing, I highly recommend the comprehensive services provided by Bob Cable and Coronado Hypnotherapy. Schedule an appointment with Bob to accomplish - and even identify - your goals. You will be richly rewarded for any amount of time spent working with such a caring, skilled, and accomplished healer. As for me, I cannot possibly thank Bob enough for his help.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease about three years ago. It came as quite a shock. I’d never really been sick before, but now I felt as if I’d been given a death sentence. At first, I tried to remain positive. I joined a “Parkie” support group and my wife joined one for caregivers. Most of the people in my group were a lot worse off than I was. You’d think this would make me feel better but it didn’t at all. I started getting more and more depressed. My doctor and the people at the Parkinson’s Center were very supportive but they didn’t offer counseling services. I was also scared about taking an anti-depressant that might interact with my Parkinson’s medication. Finally, I reached a point where I was so depressed my wife got scared I might kill myself. She insisted I find a therapist and asked around until someone told her about Ilisa. My wife went with me to the first appointment. I got a good feeling about Ilisa during that meeting. After that, I continued on my own. Therapy with Ilisa has been extremely helpful. We’ve been working on a few different things. First, she showed me how to use mindfulness techniques that enabled me to stop obsessing about my symptoms or spend hours on the Internet reading about Parkinson’s. She also helped me get some perspective. I still have some good years ahead of me. I have a great marriage and a loving family. I’ve made new friends through the Parkinson’s community. And there’s always a chance of a cure. I think what’s helped most though is the warmth and understanding she always brings to our sessions. It’s such a relief to be able to say things that other people might find shocking. Just being able to express my rage and fear in a safe environment has been a great relief. I still have Parkinson’s, but I know now it doesn’t have to ruin the rest of my life. I thank Ilisa for that.

Lingfei is amazingly intuitive and dedicated to helping others. In the span of only a couple months, she has managed to help me turn around some deep-seated issues that a lifetime of therapy and other treatments have only managed to improve painstakingly slowly, if at all. For individuals who are truly ready and willing to have a better and more fulfilling life, I highly recommend her services for helping you with your goals.

We did hire Rosa and have seen her once for couples therapy. Her office deserves 5 stars because it is centrally located, quaint and very welcoming. She is friendly and welcomed us with open arms. She was easy to talk to and we look forward to more sessions with her. Hopefully with a little work from the both of us and professional guidance from her we'll get our relationship back on track. Another plus is that she has a doctorate degree and specializes in family and couples therapy and seems very knowledgeable of the whole process. She contacted me promptly and made the whole process of paperwork and appointment setting very easy. Overall, 5 stars so far!

I enlisted the help of Jivana Kennedy about 3 years ago. At the time, I was sorting out the ending of a long marriage and some issues related to my health and wellness. Jivana was caring, professional, knowledgeable, and dependable to work with on all occasions. Jivana is deeply familiar in the areas of holistic healing and alternative therapies and her guidance has been immensely helpful. I have enlisted the help of Jivana over the past three years, and each time I found her to be a wise and kind support over some of life’s thorniest issues. It’s for that reason that I am pleased to be able to give Jivana Kennedy a five star review. Gary Wc

Tana is amazing! She is professional, caring, and helpful / supportive in my mission to move through the difficulties of life in order to heal and experience growth. I have seen her for a variety of therapies; including energy balancing, life and relationship coaching, aromatics, and CST (Cranial Sacral Therapy). I have also enjoyed her well balanced, flavorful cooking many times by ordering dinner (she’s a personal chef and teaches cooking classes too) when I know I won’t have time to prepare it myself!

Ms. Paukova has worked with me as a musician for the past three years. She has always been professional and has written as well as arranged the music for our events. She is currently working with me and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. I have also watched her work with her autistic son using music to teach him skills to help him prepare for his future. I feel she is very competent and would be an asset for anyone who would employ her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
