I'm an intermediate jazz pianist in my late 20s. Busy career, but I'm trying to make time to learn. Clifford is excellent. He has me on a rigorous program of music theory, technique, classic pieces for sight reading, and applied lessons composing accompaniments and voicing jazz standards. Clifford meets his students wherever they are skill-wise, and is truly passionate about helping them improve. He introduces one or two concepts a lesson, and we're building up a solid repertoire by working them until I've achieved mastery and then slowly combining them. I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with Clifford- I highly recommend him.

Note: This is only based on 1 interaction. Mindy taught my daughter's lesson for 1/2 hour. My daughter needed help with a school piece. Mindy patiently explained musical terms my daughter was unfamiliar with. Mindy asked my daughter questions that made her think. Mindy made sure my daughter was relaxed even when she made mistakes or couldn't answer a question. My daughter seemed to connect well with Mindy by the end of this first lesson. I was thrilled the lesson was 30 minutes (and maybe a couple minutes more) as previous teachers have cut short the lesson time. I liked the room where the lesson was taught because it was large (we're use to cramped studios) and had a lot of air circulation. The location is close enough that I don't have to use the freeway. I really liked the fact that there wasn't another student when we arrived and there wasn't a student when we left. It was really distracting at previous lessons with other teachers when students left their lessons late causing our lesson to start late and students arriving before our lesson was finished. I look forward to seeing my daughter's improvement until Mindy's guidance.

Andi is am amazing person and a very patient teacher. I have been a student with Andi for about a year and can not find any more reasons to hit the class, he has helped me not just with the lessons, but loaning an instrument when I did not have, also extending help to chose an outstanding equipment, repair it. All my classes, lessons, sheets all are sent by him the next day of my classes, he monitors, takes initiative and hardly forgets a thing from the class. Very patient, down to earth teacher and his skills are just amazing. He helped me set my goals as per my preference and work towards them. His USP is his knowledge to theory as well as his skills on the board, amazing teacher to learn a new skill, very patient and accommodating - I travel 30 miles to take classes and every bit of it has been worth, for a newbie to music he has made me so comfortable with the instrument.

Super helpful in finding my voice and finding ways to explain concepts in a way that was easy for me to understand since I had no prior voice lessons or experience. Also, he is flexible in his schedule so it was easy to find a time for thre lesson that would work for me. Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants to improve their singing ability.

We weren't sure what to expect from a self-defense class, but Max offered me a good breakdown over email prior to the coming in to teach, and once here, he was good about demonstrating techniques and allowing the class to do as much or as little as they were comfortable with. I found Max's lessons to be practical for the common person, and his teaching style is to the point, but relaxed. He'll answer questions as you go along and help you to chain together the different things he teaches you. We've asked him back for every other week, so he's definitely doing the right things! We have a lot of fun, but also learn a lot from Max.

Ann is a knowledgeable, patient, and talented teacher! I've completed 7 sessions so far and they have all been so enjoyable because of her teaching style -- encouraging and lighthearted. I have no previous training and didn't know what to expect from voice lessons, but it was easy to follow Ann's guidance. From learning to breathe correctly to singing scales and parts of favorite songs, we've already been through a lot in a short time frame. I look forward to continuing my studies with her.

I have been taking lessons from Nando for over a year now and really love the flexibility his lessons provide. He is so willing to help accommodate your schedule. His lessons are a good reminder to keep up with my learning and speaking Spanish. Since I only take 1 lesson a week, I have to do additional learning on my own (which everyone should do anyway) but I like the lessons so much that I just renewed!

Welcoming, funny, patient and professional. Ken's style of teaching is exactly what I was looking for. Being a shy person I was hesitant to start vocal lessons. I just had my second lesson and I can't wait until next week. Great teacher!

Liz is the real deal. She was able to pick up on the needs of my daughter and focus on that. She didn't waste time on things already learned or trying to reteach or practice things already known. She makes the lesson count without making it onerous. She is a true professional willing to teach the serious student. She is also kind, motivating (without being condescending) and understanding. I appreciate her flexibility and adaptability in working with my teen daughter. Because of her my daughter is enjoying singing!

Dylan is prepared to help you meet your goals from the moment you meet him. He is organized, very knowledgable and able to pick up and play guitar or bass to give you a real playing together experience. I haven't ever had any other lessons before, but so far Dylan has been very helpful and I've learned a lot of theory that is directly applicable to what I am trying to learn.

I have been taking voice lessons with Marla Volovna for 7 months now. In this short time I have progressed faster than I ever had before, in vocal technique as well as in interpretation and musicianship. Marla is very demanding, very honest and very encouraging… a killer combo for success. And Marla’s commitment to her students’ progress really extends beyond the weekly lesson, with regular communication of tips to improve technique, interpretation, links to performances, documentaries, archives, etc… I highly recommend Volovna Vocal Studio.

Chris is a really good musician and teacher. Some musicians are so good they forget what it's like to 'not know'. Chris can be with you, where you're at even though he is a highly skilled player. His patience is very encouraging. It's inspiring to take lessons with him and to remember we all NEED music!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
