Ronaldo with Bright Ideas plumbing was a light shining through a very stressful situation. His communication was prompt and direct, his timing was excellent, his quote was no nonsense, and his work fast and excellent. Next time, I will skip thumbtack all together and call Ronaldo directly. I really can't express enough how satisfied I am.

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Mr. Rooter started a bit slowly in that they didn't respond with an actual quote, sent me to a phone number, and then didn't respond to my message within the promised 5 minutes. However, when I followed up through Thumbtack, their marketing manager Ralph went way above and beyond to help me with my emergency plumbing needs. Ralph was out of town in Colorado, but he nonetheless called me from his personal cell phone, got me scheduled and even got me a discount. The plumber who showed up was friendly, professional, and fixed my issue quickly. While the job was a little pricey, it was not unexpectedly so given the emergency/late night timing. I'd definitely recommend Mr. Rooter for emergency plumbing needs.

GEM construction arrived a couple of days prior to working on my bathroom to give me a free estimate. They were very professional and easy to communicate with. They replaced the faucet and vanity in our bathroom. Everything was done in a day and they cleaned up after themselves. They are very honest even showed me a receipt for parts they had to purchase to finish working on our bathroom (I didn’t ask them for it). I recommend GEM construction for your plumbing needs.

Stephan is extremely detailed and does what needs to be done in order for the job to be right. Stephan went beyond the role of a plumber helping us bring up the massively heavy vanity with my husband and 2 other neighbors up our stairs and through our narrow hallway. In order for the vanity to be flushed against the way, he cut through our trim. He had to take our old sink and break it open to get parts. When he was done, he caulked the back. It looked beautiful. A few days later we noticed the sink's water would drain slowly. I texted Stephan and he was back at our house a day later with new pipes and a professional grade snake. Stephan is beyond capable of even the biggest projects and is all around a nice guy you trust.

I needed to replace the valves in my laundry room and fix a leaky shower head. Valentino from Deals on Wheels Plumbing reached out with his phone number and agreed to come in the very same day. He arrived on time, looked at the issues, quoted a fair price up front and completed the job very efficiently. Valentino is very personable, friendly, professional and I would definitely hire him again for any plumbing needs.

I had a plumbing problem that had been plaguing me for over a months. I had four plumbers come and take a look at the problem and only one - Selvin - figured out what the problem actually was (and it turned out to be much simpler than what all of the other plumbers were suggesting). I would strongly recommend Selvin for any of your plumbing problems.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
