Carl has been assisting my 13 year old daughter with her Algebra over the past few weeks and gets along very well with her. He is also not a 'clock watcher', as frequently he has stayed a little longer to make sure she understands the concepts completely. As a result, our daughter has exhibited more confidence in her continuing quest towards fully understanding this sometime difficult subject. We thank Carl for his teaching methods and his intuitive understanding of a young teens mind and what can be, and should be expected from them. Ray and Jocelyn M. Burbank Ca.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Daniel. He is immediately responsive, thoughtful, caring, and an absolutely fantastic tutor. In just two weeks he helped raise my 7th grade son's algebra grade from a 36 to a 90! It doesn't get any better than that. We are already excited for our 5th grade son to work with Daniel in the future. Thank you Daniel for becoming a terrific addition to our family!

Elite Home Tutoring went above and beyond to meet my daughter tutoring needs in a very tight time frame. I communicated with them over the weekend trying to get a tutor by Monday to prepare my daughter for a Tuesday test. They made every effort to connect me with a highly competent tutor in record time. Our initial session was very positive as my daughter, who is a bright 14-year-old in a demanding algebra class, had her questions answered in a way that made sense to her, practiced, and, as a result, started regaining her confidence. We highly recommend Elite to anyone in need of professional tutoring. Definitely worth it.

Déa is such a great tutor and I’m so happy I found her. I’m taking a college algebra course and she really helps so much to the point I prefer her ways of doing the work than my professor. She’s very smart, patient, affordable and is really well with working with your schedule. Hire her! She’s better than the tutors at my college!

I am a professor of mathematics and the supervisor of the Math Tutoring Lab at Los Angeles Valley College. Reza is one of the best tutors I have met on any campus I have taught at including University of Utah, Cal State Los Angeles, and numerous community colleges. Reza has tutored at LA Valley College for the past 9 years. Overall he has tutored for 18 years. He is commonly the tutor I hear praised most often by my students. They tell me that not only is his mathematics excellent but he is very clear in his explanation and very supportive with his attitude. He makes my students want to do more math because he makes it very comprehensible for them. Reza tutors Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus and Statistics. He is the standard I hold up my other tutors to. He shows up on time, teaches very intuitively and my students walk away from each session with him feeling better about themselves. As a person, I find Reza to be a wonderful role model who volunteers many hours each week at the tutoring lab, teaching math to many students on campus.

Amy has been tutoring my 10th grade son in Geometry for a year. Amy is not only a lovely person, but is a fantastic teacher and tutor. She goes above and beyond in her commitment to her students, putting so much time and care into her weekly lessons. Her talent for teaching was apparent from the first session and her ease with teenagers is absolutely amazing. She is a no-nonsense tutor and can get my distracted son straight to work, but she also has a great sense of humor which makes the time more relaxed and enjoyable for him. When I hear them laughing during the sessions, it warms my heart. My son told me that Amy explains the problems better than his teacher and he actually understands the material when she goes over it with him. He is enrolled in Algebra 2 in the Fall and I am definitely hiring Amy for the summer to get a head-start on the school year!!

Sol helped my daughter with geometry, algebra II and trig. He reviewed her material prior to their meetings and was well equipped to answer her questions. My daughter found him to be sweet and easy to work with. Prior to exams, he quickly helped her understand concepts that were confusing. I highly recommend him for advanced math...any math really!

I originally met Tai to get help with AP Calculus AB, which I ended up getting an A in! After our work with calculus, Tai let me know how valuable the SAT was for colleges, and that I must improve my score. In about two months, Tai helped me increase my score from 1200 to 1400, which is in the 99th percentile. Tai really cares about his students, and is always just a text away. He’s unlike any other tutor because of the teachings of the importance of a positive mindset, which is a lesson I can apply to more than academics, but life in general. Highly recommend Tai for any student.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
