Wow! I am not easily impressed, but I was blown away by the quality, freshness, and entire set-up and presentation by your team. To see the meat grilled and chopped on one side, while fresh corn tortillas were being pressed out on the other, it just added to the atmosphere! Our family has used 5 different Taco Catering companies because we had never found one worth calling back. But thanks to you guys, we will look no further! We will call you every time! And although I am a bit of a control freak and was uneasy because you were so laid back before the event (all communication was through Thumbtack, which is new to me) in hind sight, I was worried for nothing. You were so laid back because you know what you are doing, and all of my guests were so pleased! I've had many requests for your number since the event and look forward to calling you again soon!

Jose at Mr Worldwide Catering, did the catering for an 80th birthday party for us on March 28 2015, we did tacos, rice, beans, he also did fruit, cheese, and veggie platters for us. The food was all excellent, the service was awesome, was there when he stated he would be, did all the set up and clean up of food. Really enjoyed the professional way things were done. Everyone at the party raved about the food, and how nice everything was set up. He even had flowers for his food table to really made it look great. I hope I have the chance to use him again, for other things this is one TOP NOTCH CATERING SERVICE.

The menu, food, service, and delivery were all great for a memorial service reception. Shawna was able to customize the food and extras to accommodate all the needs for this situation. There were many complements about the food from our guests. Thank you for making everything worry-free and wonderful for this day!

Chef Mumsie catered an event at one of other properties and the food was so delicious, I hired her to cater our Christmas Party at our building (Bayside Terrace). She and her staff were very helpful, courteous and attentive to our needs. They were only scheduled to drop off the food due to another event occurring the same day, however, they not only dropped off the food, but stayed and assisted with setting up the warmers, provided other utensils we did not have and ensured that we were okay and ready to serve before they left. Overall, the food was delicious and the service was great! I would recommend her services to anyone who is looking for a quality catering company to service your event!

I'm Italian so I'm really picky about Italian food. I hired Francesco and Cucina Migrante for the opening party of my new company, so for me was a big deal: a lot of potential clients were invited. Everything was perfect, from the food to the service. For a moment I though to be back in Italy. Thanks to the chef and the staff! Ps: I totally recommend to book Cucina Migrante for your events!

Isaac's Catering was unbelievable! Mary was extremely accommodating. We had to cancel our event last minute due to fires in our area. We rescheduled without a hitch. Delivery was right on time, food quality was top notch, and the price was fantastic. Everyone at the party enjoyed the delicious food. There is no doubt Isaac's Catering will be serving our parties in the future. Thank you for a job well done. Sincerly, Ronda

Christine McMaster is a hidden gem of the culinary and catering world! She was the caterer last year for a wedding I attended and I was most impressed. She completely handled an amazing dinner for 21 people with delectable Indian and Middle Eastern Food; taking care of the shopping, the food preparation, the service and cleaning up of the food and leftovers. I was so impressed that I asked her to cater an Indian Meal for 75 people! Since it was a much larger undertaking, we provided theingredients, but Chris oversaw every aspect of the preparation of a 5 course meal, and remained calm, organized and personable throughout. The food was absolutely delicious. I would absolutely recommend her for any catering needs you might have - you would be lucky to get her!

We had a phenomenal Thanksgiving Dinner prepared and delivered by BAPS catering. We were expecting about 20 people for our holiday dinner and BAPS catering delivered a wonderful meal that everyone loved. The turkey was moist, the vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin cheesecake were delicious. Needless to say, we had enough food to satisfy everyone and still had some great Thanksgiving leftovers. We would definitely recommend BAPS catering for everyone who wants tasty food cooked just the way you like. Thanks for helping us make our holiday dinner such a success!

Joann is not only an amazing chef but an absolute joy to work with! We receive gluten free, all organic, home made meals every week for our family of 5! They are always fresh and delicious! I don't have to worry about cooking wholesome meals every night because all I need to do is preheat my oven, put in our food that comes prepared in class dishes, heat it for about 20 min. And enjoy a healthy dinner with my family! I have a type 1 diabetic daughter and this meal plan has been a true blessing! I highly recommend joann for all your catering needs! You will not be disappointed! Her prices can't be beat for the level of quality she provides! Thanks joann!!! :)

This lady can COOK! She’s such a sweetheart to boot— one of the girls in our group class recognized her from when she was on Food Network and got a little nervous and star-struck but Monterey was so friendly and GENUINE while she walked my friend through one of the trickier steps of the recipe we were making. Her food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, and it was clear she really put in a lot of time and effort into making sure everyone in the group had a fantastic and MEMORABLE evening.

We had our annual conference and needed someone that had some flexibility on the amount of guests attending. O'Side BBQ Man was not just accommodating but provided amazing service. He arrived early to make sure he was ready to serve on time and also the food was amazing. Everyone wished they could have had seconds, maybe even thirds. We will definitely be booking O'Side BBQ Man for any future company events.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
