Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

How often should you have your house cleaned?

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

Hired to do a deep clean for a house prior to move in. I was not present when cleaning was done. Work was fine but not as much of a “deep” clean as I was anticipating. Update: The home was dusty, there were some cobwebs in a few corners, and the walls appeared to be wiped at but not actually clean. How busy I am has no bearing on my review so I see no reason to include a timeline in the response, either the work was done satisfactorily or it wasn't. It was more of a "maintenance" cleaning than a "deep" cleaning.

Dinora came in and got directly to work. She was quite dedicated in her raft, and made sure my new house was immensely clean. Highly recommend her to anyone's home.

According to communication we had prior to the cleaning job it was communicated that we needed a deep cleaning of our house. I went into the house this morning and below is what I found * base of toilet bowls were not cleaned * faucets in bathrooms, shower, and kitchen was dirty and looked like it has not been wiped * I had to sweep kitchen floor * kitchen counter top still had crumbs at the edges near the backsplash * several baseboards had to be cleaned * floors In bathroom were not swept before mopped so all the dirt was at the edges of flooring * wood kitchen cabinets had residue and you could see where they were wiped showing streaks * kitchen windowsill was not cleaned That was just the downstairs. This is our first time using a cleaning service and had high expectations that the job would be done correctly. I don’t understand paying for cleaning to have to go back in and redo some of the jobs. Huge disappointment

Did not do deep cleaning like requested; only cleaned glass on coffee table and end table. Glass bowl on coffee table, artificial plant dusty, did not clean around kitchen cabinet handles, doors, did not throw out dead plant as requested. Did not clean ceiling fan until told. House smelled good but did sparkle or shine. Did not leave name and phone number as requested. Would not recommend services.

I was super excited to have my house professionally cleaned for a special event I’m having at my home. It was a complete disappointment. I literally could not tell what was cleaned. My blinds were dusty, the base of the toilets not clean, could not tell that they swept or mopped, specific windows needed dusting and it was not done. Alisa spent 4 hours doing who knows what. My 10 year old son cleans better. Now I have to not only prepare for the event but I have to add re cleaning my home. So disappointed and stressed. The only redeeming quality was the owner, who listened to me, apologized and said she would refund our money.

I hired Rosy and her team to do a move out cleaning on my 5 bedroom house. They were all pleasant and very professional. They worked extra hard to complete the challenging task under tight time constraints. When they were finished our house looked and smelled brand new. They definitely helped take a lot of the stress away with this move. I will definitely be hiring Rosy and her team again in the near future.

I wouldn't recommend this House Cleaning company to anyone. They didn't provide the appropriate amount of resources to support the job they quoted. They charge me 180.00 for a deep cleaning. I did even have the clean 3 out of are 4 bedrooms. The lady did a good job, but I only got my master bedroom, and bathroom and some of my kitchen. She didn't even mop. because she ran out of time. I am so upset this company come off to be a nice religious company, though my fist experience with this company wasn't good. I am very happy that they quickly contacted to apologize and make this right. I understand the lady was need and misunderstood the job.

Sam is a very nice young lady who I was able to communicate with easily. Through a series of messages she described the work she would be providing as well as her experience. It seemed to be a good fit . . . unfortunately the quality of work fell far below what I expected. My request was for a deep cleaning of an empty 3 bedroom house. (On this app it is referred to as a move out cleaning.) Basic things such as the stove top and kitchen drawers and parts of the kitchen counter were dirty, the floors in the bathrooms felt gritty and the toilets were left with residual dried urine on the outside of the toilet bowl. Some touch up work was done by her before leaving but ultimately many tasks had to be redone by myself or other family members.

I felt very comfortable having Yessica in my home with me there and also while I was running errands. Both of my small dogs excepted her right away and that was a big plus for me. She came in and started working right away with only the instructions I gave her last week. She didn’t take a break, which would have been fine with me, and worked for 6 hours without slowing down. She was so polite, friendly, and easy to explain things to. On top of all of that my house looks and smells clean and comfortable.
