Chef Marcel and his team were so amazing. We hired him for a Thumbtack event for LA Pros, and we could not have been happier. The food was some of the best food I have ever eaten. It was SO BEAUTIFUL too. His team was so friendly, professional, prompt, clean, courteous, and fun. And he was so patient with me during the planning process when we kept changing plans and numbers. SO GREAT. I would hire him over and over again.

I had an amazing experience with Carolina and Gourmet Lovers Catering!! The food was incredible but the personal customer service put them over the top! I hired them for a baby shower event and so many guests asked me where I got the food from! Will definitely look to them again for my next event. 110% satisfied!

San Francisco City Hall for a wedding reception has many rules and regulations as it is a government building and requires a lot of security and supervision. In addition to that, there isn't a kitchen on site so a tent is required as well as all rental equipment. Chef Mark and his group truly went above and beyond for our event. My husband does not like seafood at all but after our tasting, he was so impressed with the fish that he even considered having the fish as his entree for our wedding. Our guests were so impressed by our appetizers and dinner. We were assured restaurant quality and I wasn't surprised when all of our guests complimented us on how delicious the food was. It was catered specifically to us and Chef Mark and Roy spent time with us discussing what we would like for ourselves and our guests. Everything was tailored specifically to our celebration and that is truly a representation of us for the night. It was more than we could have asked for. We can't thank you enough for this. My initial concern was that Mark Kearney's Group is based from LA whereas our wedding in San Francisco but the communication was always frequent and Roy was very responsive and caring about our concerns. From start to finish they always assured us that they truly wanted to make sure our special night went without any concerns and they were on our side. Our event did not go without any bumps and when I found out from our wedding coordinator that a broken stove was delivered, I just couldn't believe that Chef Mark and his crew was able to deliver such wonderful meals to our guests under such a stressful situation. It's not the events that go flawlessly that are impressive but the ones that have a lot of obstacles that are impressive. I had absolutely no idea the kind of stress that must have been involved and our coordinator only told us afterwards so we had no idea on the day of. It is truly a mark of their professionalism. The thing is, I was already so impressed with all the other details that Chef Mark went out of his way to take care of for us. He made sure that a bottle of champagne was saved for us. When appetizers came around he specifically made sure my favorite came to me directly. When he flew up for our walk through, he took the time to take a picture of my husband and me because he was excited for us. We never requested any of these, but he just did them because he cares. His execution of the night was perfect as far as I am concerned and did not go unnoticed by ALL of our other vendors. EVERYONE was very impressed and I am so incredibly grateful and thankful for him and Roy and the rest of their team. You guys are amazing and we can't thank you enough!! We love you!

From the quote process all the way through to catering our company picnic, Pam with The Pit Stop BBQ was outstanding. She was excellent in answering all of our questions, arrived on time, cooked AMAZING BBQ, and served all of our guests with a smile on her face. We couldn't have been more pleased with The Pit Stop BBQ and we will definitely be using their services again. I couldn't say enough positive things about their catering services and the food they cooked. The pig candy was my favorite and the ribs were cooked to perfection. Don't hesitate - they're awesome!

We hired Shelley for our wedding in April and LOVED her work! When we met with her she was very interested in us and our preferences, and was very helpful in reigning our scatterbrained thoughts in. She offered an array of appetizers, garlic bread, green beans (the biggest hit of all our guests!), and a creamy pasta. Although we didn't use them, she could provide dinnerware. She even visited our venue with us to get an idea of the kitchen and facilities. We never got to try the appetizers because our guests cleaned them up, so they must have been good! All through the evening everyone was amazed how good the food was. The food truly exceeded our expectations, and working with Shelley was a joy as well. She and her staff were friendly, prompt, very professional, and she worked miracles with that food. Thank you so much!

I am thrilled to share with you my experience with Chef LaTay. First it must said, her food is AMAZING. In Jan 2015, I married the love of my life; I had a small backyard wedding of about 75 ppl total and Chef LaTay catered the food for my special day. We decided to go with Tri-Tip Roast, Fully loaded mashed potatoes, Green Beans, and Salad. Her food was a hit. Delicious and memorable. My guests were happily fed and pleased with every bite and so was I. In the past, Chef LaTay would do weekly orders every Friday and Saturdays where she would deliver her meals to those local near her. It was a huge meal that came with dessert and a drink, worth the price indeed. That’s where/when I would also have some of her other delicious foods. My personal favorites are her Macaroni and Cheese, her Salmon, her Enchiladas, her Chicken (every way she makes it), and her Oxtail. She also makes wonderful tasty desserts. Her cakes are all homemade and are to die for. I love her Chocolate cake and her frostings are the best! Better than any other cakes I’ve had. And I can’t forget the dessert my husband and I always ask for throughout the year, Banana Pudding! Again, AMAZING! It is an honor to have Chef LaTay’s food be a part of my life. Every delicious bite makes you wish there was no such thing as getting full. Having her for your events or for a small special occasion, you won’t be disappointed. Chef LaTay is very creative with her food and service. She comes with class and excellent customer service. She makes sure you get what you asked for; just very professional with a welcoming loving spirit. Chef LaTay It’s Made Devine is worth your time to try her food, because I guarantee you, you’ll be asking for more!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
