I also liked the overall quality of his work - neat and tidy. He was courteous and polite. Overall, a great experience - highly recommended plumbing professional.

David was great! He works normally as maintenance man for an apartment complex, but he came to our place after work hours to help unclog our garbage disposal and shower drain and did a great job clearing some unruly glass items in the disposal and dealt with rust on the shower drain. He was honest and upfront about everything and explained what the issues were as he fixed them. He did this all for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of plumbing or other handyman sort of work for your house or apartment. Thanks David!

Ronnie is amazing! To start off, he was right on time arriving at 9:30 am exactly. He was very knowledgeable and professional, I could tell he was taking a close look at the situation before starting which I appreciated. He got the job done quickly and did a fantastic job. And pricing was fair as well, not cheap but lower than most quotes I received. Totally worth it. I wouldn't even think twice about hiring Ronnie again- if I ever experience plumbing issues of any kind, he will be the first call!

Oscar contacted me within a few hours of posting my thumbtack request, and came out the next day to quote and talk through the job with me. When the scope of work was more than my budget could handle, he was willing to work on changing the scope down to something that was not as ambitious as what we wanted. We did the quoting live with me to save time, and we agreed on the final scope and costs over the phone that night. The final pricing was competitive with the other bids I got while being the most flexible and easiest to deal with. He was on site at 9am the next day to get the job done, removed the old tankless water heater that had failed and installed a new Tank water heater in just over 4 hours for the whole job. He was great to work with, always easy to talk to and courteous, and was flexible to let me handle what parts of the job I could to help save a little bit of cost. I'd highly recommend them if you need a plumbing job done quickly without alot of back and forth.

Ray and Gary are highly recommended. They worked on a number of projects as I remodelled a unit: - rerouted all the plumbing in kitchen - moved location of hot water heater - added sink to a toilet room - rerouted gas line Ray is everything you could want in a professional: great communication, clear bid, trustworth, punctual, and most importantly, does really good work.

For this job Omar came within 20 minutes of my job posting. We had a difficult situation with installing our window blinds because they were not the perfect for within windows. He came up with the smartest solution that we didn't think initially. That saved us time and work and blinds look better than before. He gladly agreed to finish some other work around the house within the same hour too. We ended up hiring for our plumbing job as well. He excelled in that as well. We are planning to hire him for our floor installation too.

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Very polite, professional, hard working, honest, good communicator: Ali from A1 Budget Plumbing did a great work! Ali has been wonderful from the very beginning to the completion of the job. Punctual, even early for the appointments (he communicated that he has arrived at the location). He came to see the work needed to be done, gave the best price quote, and was patient while we were deciding. He also helped us purchasing the stuff, and this was a big help since we didn't know what and where to get our project done. The work site is left clean, the job is completed to perfection and we are happy clients. From now on, we will only hire Ali from A1 Budget Plumbing! Thank you!!

Greg was on top of the job and the estimate he gave originally was accurate. It was also the best estimate I got from almost 8 other companies I checked with. I would call Greg for all my plumbing needs in the future. He was also kind enough to unclog my bathroom sink which had been unusable for almost a year now. Even though it was not part of the work order but he obliged anyways. My new water heater is working great and I am very happy with Greg's work.

I needed to replace the valves in my laundry room and fix a leaky shower head. Valentino from Deals on Wheels Plumbing reached out with his phone number and agreed to come in the very same day. He arrived on time, looked at the issues, quoted a fair price up front and completed the job very efficiently. Valentino is very personable, friendly, professional and I would definitely hire him again for any plumbing needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
