We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

Carlos and his team did a few projects for my restaurant. I had them repaired the ceiling, fixed some cracks on the wall, demolished the one half wall, and installed new tile floor. Carlos arranged 3 of his best guys to work on my project. Those 3 guys are good! I like working with them. They worked fast and the quality of work is good.

Sean has done a number of different jobs for me, and they've all been great. He has remodeled a bathroom, taken the "cottage cheese" off of a ceiling and then finished the room, installed patterned tile on the kitchen wall as well as installing tile floors. He has also done extra odd jobs, just to help out, like with the sprinkler system and adding safety grab bars in a bathroom. He takes pride in his work and is very capable.

Robert sent over his guys, Patrick and Chris, for our kitchen demo and we thought they were awesome. They were on time, polite, very neat, and even honored our request of preserving a couple of pieces of our old granite as well as our tile floors which we plan to keep. It was a pleasure working with them and based on our experience, we would recommend them very highly.

I hired Mohammad for installation of laminate floors in my living, bedrooms (3) and stairs. He did an excellent job and is extremely detail oriented. He will not stop until the work is done right. His quote was very competitive compared to any other installer in San Diego. He was on time every day and worked very hard. I would hire him in a heartbeat for all my future needs that relate to wood. If you are hiring him, here is one suggestion to wrap up this review: He might under estimate the time to complete the job. And as he starts working, he will get into the microscopic details and might take extra time to complete the project. But his work is worth that extra time.

I have had the opportunity to Brendt work on 3 homes that I have purchased over 15 years. He has done extensive remodeling from - Tile, Installation of Doors, movement of walls, electrical and even putting in a structual beam and at all times the work has been excellent, exactly what we were looking to do and done on time within budget; and was open to chages as the project moved forward. Freedom Renovation finished our kitchen remodel about 4 weeks ago and we LOVE it! We found them through door hanger. We live in La Jolla area, so we drove up north and stopped by their showroom, met Anna and set up an appointment. Alex and Anna arrived on time 2 days later and really listened to what we wanted, while other contractors did not. A day or two later we got an email with our initial estimate and a 3-D picture of expected result. A few adjustments needed to be made, so we called in with Alex to discuss about it in further detail. Alex and Allen were also super nice and willing to work with us to reduce the cost. We talked for a few days, and finally made our decision to go with them because they appeared down to earth and reliable. The first 2 days guys showed up to demo the kitchen, tile floor and the soffit. By the end of day 2 demo was done, half the drywall was in and 1/4 of the tile floor was laid. By day 6, all the tile was in, drywall and mud was done! These guys work hard and fast and their work is top quality. We chose their cheapest cabinets which is real wood front and compressed engineering wood side, very sturdy and built to last. We were quoted a 5-week time line and they finished in 4 weeks - Alex the project manager was terrific and always available. The tile looks so good. Their work ethic and quality are solid and I would be happy to work with them again.

Robert did a bathroom remodel for me. The service and craftsmanship was excellent. Timely and efficient. The bathroom came out looking great, it's been 2 years and no problem with leaks. When I first got my bathroom done, the guys before Robert (diff company) didn't grout the tile correctly, so the water ended up leaking behind the tub and ruining the drywall. Robert and his guys came in and were very thorough, they tore out the bad drywall and redid the tub and tile. I had them do the floor tile as well as the sink. I also hired them to reroute the sprinklers in the front yard, which had been broken since I moved into the house. They redid the entire front yard in a weekend! Very fast. I plan on using them again when I'm ready to do my kitchen.

Replaced carpet in 5 rooms, installed ceramic tile in 2 bathrooms, installed new baseboards throughout the house. An excellent experience! Eric Bateman was extremely helpful throughout the process of estimation, product selection and installation. The house is in a remote area and the job required numerous visits that were all included in the very reasonable price.

We redid our master bath and flooring in the entry way and kitchen/dining room. In the bath we removed a tub and extended the shower. In the entry way and kitchen/dining room the existing tile was removed and new flooring installed. Anselmo and his team were very professional and completed the job in a timely manner. Everything turned out beautifully and we love it!

Nick repaired some water damage in the floor of my laundry room and kitchen. He tore out the floor, repaired the damage in the subfloor, leveled the floor out and put down new vinyl flooring. He also installed a new water heater and dishwasher for me (which is what was leaking causing the water damage). He was very responsive, answered all of my questions, kept in touch, worked efficiently, and the flooring looks great! I recommend him highly.

Sergio and the Pros Remodeling team took out my original backsplash and installed a new one. I hired Sergio not only because he gave me the best quote on the project, but because he was the most responsive and interested in helping right off the bat. He told me he would accompany me to the tile showroom and he placed my tile order promptly, getting me the best possible price. He and his team worked tirelessly to get the job done in the promised time...some days that meant until 9pm! He was determined to finish the job when promised and then came back and touched up everything in a timely fashion. He has great attention to detail and made sure that I was 100% happy before he finished the job. He made great suggestions and improvements to the tile layout as needed. I would definitely use him again and highly recommend his services!

I have 40 years of construction experience. Primarily a carpenter, I have developed a few properties and have extensive experience with all trades. I demand quality work and materials. In April, '11, ABOUT FLOORS installed all new flooring (carpet and vinyl) in my house in San Marcos. I have seen other of their work (harwood, tile, etc.) and I eagerly recommend this company to homeowners and general contractors. Their prices are very competitive, their work is beyond reproach, performed in a timely manner and they go "above and beyond." These guys are some of the best and most courteous of any I've ever worked with and I feel fortunate to have had them on this job. ABOUT FLOORS is about excellence. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
