I had a big double pane window that needed replacing. I was given a quote online but was revised upwards after David came to see the window. He needed my help to carry the window(which was ordered froma glass shop a week earlier after I accepted his bid) from a friend's truck. He and another friend worked for about 5 hours to install the new window. They managed to finish the job at about midnight. I had to call him back to caulk the new wood trim on the window. David is honest and I would use his service again.

Arisel did a wonderful job on the wood laminate floor and molding he put in. He was prompt, clean, and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend him. I actually have him looking at other remodeling projects we hope to get done soon!

We had an excellent experience with Cruz - we'll definitely be reaching out to him again if we ever have any rodent problems in the future. Our problem started on a Wednesday morning - we found a baby mouse in our sink. This we took care of ourselves. On Thursday night, while we were getting ready to sleep, we caught sight of a mouse running into our fireplace, which we quickly barricaded. 5 minutes after that we heard scratching in on the piece of wood that we used to block off the barricade, so we knew it was still in there. 30 minutes later, we saw another mouse run into our kitchen, that's when we blocked off the bottom of the doors around the house. At this point, it means we had at least 3 mice in the house (the baby one in the sink, the one that's trapped in the fireplace, and the one that ran into the kitchen). Friday morning, I went to the hardware store and set up 8 sticky traps baited with peanut butter around the house before work. But, we knew this wasn't enough so we decided to look for a professional. We initially found Cruz on Thumbtack - we contacted him Friday afternoon, and he came to do a free inspection on Saturday - the next day he came over again to patch up a couple problem spots we had inside our unit. After he took care of the problems inside of our unit (fireplace, behind the kitchen sink, behind the toilet), we went around the outside of the house and realized the problem was much larger than we initially thought - one side of the house was pretty much completely exposed at the ground level. Not only were there a myriad of entry/exit points for rodents, we had alot of pipes and also power meters that were in front of these problem spots. Cruz ended up coming up with a pretty elegant solution - he covered everything up. Where we had power meters and valves that would need to be accessible in the future, Cruz and his colleague installed the wire mesh as panels that could be easily removed by unscrewing a few bolts. Ever since Cruz stopped by, we haven't had any more activity, no more droppings and nothing on the traps. Cruz was very easy to work with and gave us a very reasonable rate. He responded quickly, showed up when he said he would, communicated clearly, and effectively rodent-proofed our house. He stopped by yesterday on a follow up visit to check on the traps (nothing yet). I HIGHLY recommend Cruz if you're having any type of rodent issue.

Matthew built two wood platforms for our washer & dryer that required some creativity so that they both fit comfortably within the confines of our garage space. He built solid, well-designed platforms with smooth edges. He was thorough and made a point to double check measurements as well as sought feedback from us as he built the platforms. Also installed an on/off switch for our gas line behind the dryer, which was a relief. Maintained a solid professionalism throughout the entire project as well as showed consistent communication. Would hire again without hesitation!

Gleo communicated promptly and arrived promptly -- apparently a very hard thing to find these days in service professionals. He used the equipment carefully so as not to damage hard wood floors and quickly unclogged the drain. In addition he changed the tap for a nominal amount. The second issue was not fixable and he offered to replace it.

Noel was great! I had him come install a bay window rod. I had tried to do it myself but my drill wouldn't work because the wood was too hard. He took his time and did a great job but didn't charge me for the overtime. Very professional and nice. I will definitely be calling him again!!!!

I hired Jasper to build a custom storage bench for me, and a modern barn door. Jasper responded to my post and came by to see the space prior to giving me a quote. He took my ideas and made some suggestions, and drew me a plan of what the pieces would look like. He was also able to find wood that matched my existing wooden floors and mango wood furniture very well. The bench he built fits perfectly in my space and looks seamless. The barn door is very modern (just what I wanted) and looks fantastic in my room. He also kindly offered to come by in a month to ensure that there was no issues and adjust anything to my liking once I have had time to use the pieces. Overall turnaround from the time he responded to my Thumbtack post to delivery of items was less than 2 weeks.

Magical Flooring did a great job polishing (screen, prime, and recoat) my hardwood floors. They set expectations, came on time, and took care of anything. The only small nit was that they put some furniture back in the wrong places (a photo ahead of time would have been good). But it was minor, so: 5 stars!

I'm a repeat customer. I've hired Andres of Peninsula Custom Floors three times to do woodwork on my home in Palo Alto because of his expertise, the pride he has in his work, and his fair pricing. When Andres replaced the baseboards in my house he was careful to choose the most pristine pieces of wood, and he replaced the baseboards in the closets with the wood he had leftover from the bedrooms even though I hadn't hired him to do so. He didn't charge me extra. He said it was the right thing to do for the job. I recommend Andres to all of my friends and family and will hire him again in the future.

Juan and his assistant installed a security grill which was complicated by the fact that my wood door needed to be cut and re-hung to open inwards. I was thrilled, first off, that Juan was willing to do the job, since a couple other people I spoke with wanted me to buy a new door. Juan responded very quickly, answered all my questions, and was very professional and clear with his quote. His price was extremely fair, a bargain really, and he was able to accommodate my schedule and stay in touch via email. They worked very cleanly, covering the deck and floors, and tenting off the kitchen with taped plastic. The work went very quickly and smoothly. Juan needed to tweak a few things in order to make everything fit, so the finished product has some tiny flaws. Aesthetically and functionally, though, the doors are exactly what I wanted and expected for my slightly funky older home. I would definitely hire him again.

Dan is awesome! After a plumber fixed the leaky faucet in my kitchen sink, he pointed out the rotted wood in the storage area underneath and suggested I contact a handyman to replace it. I feared this would be really expensive to fix. Through a google search for a handyman, I discovered Thumbtack, which then connected me to Daniel Ball. I was really surprised by how reasonable his original quote was and am still amazed that I ultimately didn't pay anything more, even after two hours of labor. Above all, Dan was very cooperative about setting up an appointment, arrived promptly, and worked efficiently. Plus he is super-personable and friendly. Finally, I can look at the space under my kitchen sink without having to groan. (Wish I had "before" and "after photos!) I highly recommend Dan as a handy man for your home!

Kris responded promptly to my project request. And even though we decided to move forward with a wooden retaining wall, instead of a concrete wall, he offered great advice on how to improve the waterproofing and longevity of the wood wall. I appreciate his professionalism and wouldn’t hesitate to contact Kris for future home improvement projects.

Eli and his crew of highly skilled professionals prepared the house exterior, repaired and replaced wood that was substandard. Helped us choose the right color paint, primed and painted the house while carefully masking the windows and protecting the ground with drop cloths. Eli came every day and spent much of the time making sure any considerations we brought up were properly taken care of. When the painting was finished we walked through to check out that we were satisfied with the completed job.

I had Eddie do the framing and wood sheathing for my backyard structure which had a number of odd angles for the ceiling. He does excellent work, very creative in figuring out how to frame the odd angles and a craftsman. He also is very good at reading blueprints and complying with the code requirements. He's easy to work with and comes up with good suggestions. I'd be happy to have him work on my next project.

We had hardwood floors installed and were very happy with the quality of work. We appreciated the attention to details. A few times, the crew stopped and asked if a piece of wood was suitable to install. During the estimate, we went over the need to reroute a cable and they were able to do it. We were relieved that we didn't have to hire an electrician. I would have appreciated knowing when they were coming to work...however, they finished in the time frame that was given. I would recommend using them again.

Jesus did flooring in the whole house, found him working at another house in the neighborhood. I was skeptic about whom to hire because the floor was pretty costly. Jesus was persistent about the quality of workmanship and materials he used. He did Glue and nail. Very nice custom job. He is passionate and proud of his work. We also pull the same wood on a wall and a big section of ceiling. Came out real nice. All the installations were done at 45 degrees and he had the right skills to pull it through.

Sebastian and his crew were excellent for our project. We had a pretty unique request where we asked him to build a substantial retaining wall, a decorative wood wall on top of that, a back deck, and another fence. It was mostly a cosmetic, hardscaping job to disguise some strange "SF-Style" weird hillside that abuts one side of our yard. I had much of the creative vision, but Sebastian brought a ton of great ideas, and excellent execution with, what I perceive to be, top craftsmanship. I will hire him again to do more work at our place. Also, he is a very chill guy, so that helped with our pace. We are not intense (I hope), but we demanded excellent, high-end work. He used top-end materials (ipe wood) and stainless steel hardware. He really matched our style.

This is the guy you hope to find. He refinished all of the hardwood in our home and did a beautiful job. He added some wood where needed and the match is flawless. The overall finished product came out like new. I can see why all of his reviews are 5 stars. Highly recommended!! BTW, really nice guy, on time, fairly priced, honest, gave us some great advice along the way, this was no stress project for us... thank you Farell!

Mark was wonderful to work with. He responded quickly to messages on Thumbtack and via text. He was punctual and flexible with our schedule. He walked through everything with us, listened to our concerns and needs, and worked with us to stay within our budget and timing, and sequenced projects accordingly. He also has a great sense of humor and was pleasant to talk with. We were very happy with his work and the work of the professionals he worked with for electrical, plumbing, and painting. The work that was done: removal and replacement of 2 windows, walls, and flooring where there was water damage, wood rot, and the start of mold; adding a door to access the space under the front stairs and creating a storage space with tiled floor and drywall; waterproofing / sealing the brick of our front steps and porch; removing carpeting and laminate flooring and installation of new laminate flooring; installing siding on the front of our house and painting of the front of the house (2 stories); texturizing and painting walls; installing a wet bar / kitchenette; replacing shower pan, tile, and shower door; removal of tree and bushes in front yard. I think that’s everything. We highly recommend Mark and would happily work with him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
