Pete was great to work with! He REALLY knows his stuff when it comes to catering. He made suggestions to make the event better for the guests and also was available to me by phone, text and email. Pete and his team catered my wedding in Sonoma. I was an out of town Bride from San Diego and had a hard time selecting vendors. Pete gave me references to call and also made a trip to meet with us at the venue months before the wedding. He and his team did a great job staffing the event. All the wedding guests raved about his food. He also was so easy to work with and created a fun menu for us filled with the Bride and Grooms favorite entrees from all types of cuisine. He is knowledge, honest, and makes delicious foods. I highly recommend Pete and am sure we will work with him again in the future to cater other parties. Thanks Pete!

Stephanie is absolutely fantastic. She catered an intimate wedding celebration for us and it could not have been better. She is very responsive and easy to work with- she proposed a beautiful menu that she kindly modified as needed to suit dietary preferences. In addition to traveling to us for the actual wedding day, she made a trip out to our venue to see the kitchen and speak with the event coordinator at their request. Day of, she came totally prepared and made fantastic food. She also served the meal and the drinks- her service was well paced and everything was beautifully presented. I cannot say enough good things about Stephanie. Not only is her food, service, and presentation fantastic, she herself is an absolute gem. She is incredibly professional, but also warm and kind. To any bride considering her, I highly, highly recommend her! Working with her was such a joy and she went so far above and beyond to make our day special. Thank you, Stephanie!

My wedding was so beautiful! And the food made it so much better! They were on time, and they even cleaned up stuff they didn't have to clean up! So helpful, so sweet. I would definitely call them up again to have them do another event.

Deborah catered the Sunday Brunch at our Wedding back in October. She served both the Bacon and Vegetable quiches as well as made some amazing caramel apple bread pudding. She finished it off with yogurt parfaits and roasted veggies. It was truly a spectacular feast and everyone was impressed!! The timing was perfect and the experience was great! Matt and his wife Nina did a wonderful job catering my small backyard wedding for 20 people. Their food was absolutely delicious and everyone loved it! Very professional with day of services and were both very kind and welcoming people. Generally pretty responsive with emails/messages. Very receptive to everything that I wanted for the event and delivered on all my requests. We rented dinnerware and glassware from them and it made everything a breeze! Such a pleasure to work with. Overall was a good experience. I would love to eat their food again!!

Rose catered my wedding reception. Like most brides, I didn't get a chance to eat much of the food, but I do recall the coconut bisque being delicious. We got the "appetizer abundance" option, and it was a lovely variety. Desserts (chocolate mousse and apple crisp) were also high points. The spread looked great, and Rose and her staff were all very friendly and professional. They worked with my wedding planner to make everything seamless.

Angela catered my wedding of about 80 people. Her food was amazing. We got the portobello wellington, malfati, and roasted vegetables. The wellington was wonderful, the malfati good, and the vegetables were okay. The garden salad was amazing, and the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, there were issues with the kitchen and her staff was unable to provide food timely. Three tables waited approximately and hour and fifteen after everyone else had received their food. I was disappointed that I hired 4 servers and they had to pull my bartender to serve food. Which left our event in a situation where the event manager had to oversee the bar. Overall the food is really wonderful, but there were some structural issues.

We hired John to cater our intimate wedding dinner and are so happy we did. John communicated exceptionally well throughout the entire process. We live in another state, so being able to feel comfortable with the chef we hired was a requirement. He had the most reasonable price and provided a menu that met every request we had. The food was simply amazing! We had crab cakes, Caesar salad, filet of beef with a porcini mushroom red wine sauce, garlic mashed potatoes with an artichoke puree (might sound weird, but trust me it was pure heaven!), asparagus, and a brulee cheesecake with a berry coulis. John served us each course and told us about what he had prepared. He had a great sense of humor and even shared his secrets to some of the amazing dishes. He also prepared some quiches for our breakfast the following morning. We all agreed they were the best quiches we had ever eaten. Overall, I give him a 5* plus! If you get the opportunity to hire him, you definitely won't be disappointed. P.S. He also left the kitchen cleaner than when he arrived :)

Basic Catering is much more than catering company, it is a full service event company. Aristotle says "if a man does many things, they cannot do one thing well." That's not the case with Basic Catering. I hired them for a small wedding reception, and I was very impressed with their service. I'll list them as follows: 1. All my guests raved about the food. It was perfectly cooked and the quantity was worth the value. 2. They rent out their own party rentals (tables, silverware, plates, etc.) at a cost cheaper than the competitors. This was significant savings for me with no sacrifice on the quality. This also made clean-up a lot easier. I was not worried about the clean-up, but it did save me on venue costs. (They also do flowers) 3. Lastly, the most impressive aspect of Basic Catering is their professionalism. There will always be something missing or something that goes wrong. Their team is extremely resourceful, from their planners (Ben) to the people executing (Carie) and the waitstaff -- I am a big fan of resourcefulness. They thought of things I missed, and if something was wrong they made it right. They are quick and smart, and know how to get things done. They assisted in making one of the most significant days of my life a wonderful event. Thanks Ben. You did a fantastic job coordinating.

I hired In This Moment to cater my sunset/evening wedding this fall. They managed appetizers, dinner, cake cutting, and bartending. We went with a Mexican buffet and people were telling me during the evening they thought it was great idea and very delicous. (We also had a mariachi band during arrivals and ceremony to tie together a light theme.) The groom and I stole a few minutes to eat some dinner ourselves and agreed! Several mentioned that they loved that there was some great guacamole and chips to snack on immediately after the ceremony while people mingled & moved to the indoor reception area. Kristine herself is friendly, calm, and highly responsive. I was an anxious bride and she made things simple for me. I always felt better after checking in with her or seeking her guidance. I am glad Kristine was able to take on our nearly last minute request (2+ weeks out?) and help make our lightly Mexican themed/DIY wedding be fun experience for our friends and family. Thank you!

Liberation Foods BBQ was the highlight of our wedding reception! From the start of our wedding planning, Liberation Foods responded promptly to all of our questions and was flexible with our menu and budget. We were immediately impressed by the quality of the food and booked instantly for our backyard summer wedding of 150 people. Liberation Foods checked in with us frequently before our event which helped put us at ease during the planning process. On the day of our wedding, Liberation Foods was prompt and efficient with their set up. They were kind to us and our guests, adding to the overall atmosphere. Their food was a big hit and our friends are still talking about it months after! Without hesitation, I’d recommend Liberation Foods to friends and family for weddings/special events.

Avocado and Company delivered delicious and gorgeous food and was an absolute pleasure to work with. They catered our wedding this September at The Green Room and it was perfect. I have celiac disease and was nervous about finding a caterer who not only would provide a tasty gluten free menu, but also cared enough to adhere to my strict requirements to avoid cross contamination. We emailed many high end caterers, and each time got response ranging from "no we cannot do a gluten free wedding" to "we can do gluten free food but we are not sure about preventing contamination". Johnny at Avocado & Company immediately responded that they understood exactly what we needed, and had experience catering gluten free events for celiac guests. We had a cocktail style party for 120 guests we are big foodies and eat mostly local, organic food. The style and quality of dishes felt like eating in your favorite local restaurant. Our venue was atypical, being a Victorian townhouse with multiple floors and Johnny walked us through every step, assuring us they could deliver the perfect evening. We crafted a gorgeous menu with him, the we were so pleased with. The whole experience from our initial meeting to the wedding was fantastic, Johnny even took time to give us tips on wedding planning which was well beyond her role as our catering vendor. Our favorite part was the tasting where we actually had time to try all of the amazing food and have a fun evening with their team! The wedding exceeded our expectations, the food and cocktails were perfect, and Johnny and his team handled everything seamlessly throughout the evening. Our guests were blown away and we could not be happier to have worked with Avocado & Company. We look forward to using them for future events.

We hired Charles at Crumble & Whisk to cater cheesecakes for our wedding day. He was wonderful to work with from beginning to end. For our day, we ended up ordering 7 different flavors. Three large cheesecakes (Beet and Berry, Chocolate, and Banana Spice) and four bite-size options (lemon, classic, vanilla-bourbon, strawberry). Our guests loved all of the flavors, and so did we. Not only is the flavor of each cheesecake an amazing new experience, but the crust is phenomenal! And in addition to great taste, the presentation was beautiful and added an extra special touch to our day. He went above and beyond to deliver exactly what we wanted. Thank you Charles!

Marisa was to help 20 women at a wedding shower cook 4 meals to be served for lunch. Her menu was fabulous, and her generosity of spirit in working with me phenomenal-a bit disorganized at the site, but there were a lot of people and instruction for the cooking was difficult. It didn't help that timing to get there by all, including her, was compromised by the Bay to Breakers race!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
