Liz H. says, "Bob and his partner were amazing. Not only did he do a fantastic job but he taught me things about flooring I need to know for the future when buying and selling a home. Bob is truly a kind and caring guy who is on a mission to get your job done right the first time. He is clearly a perfectionist. Before I go any further I wanted to say that I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome with my damaged floor. I’m selling my co op at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek and beyond stressed about it when it comes to this. My unit is over 35 years old and in much need of repair. I’m also trying to fix the mistakes of the former owner look better for selling. My floor is around 800 square feet. The damage is extensive. Lots of water damage and scratches. I’m not in a position to re sand the floor but it looked truly awful. Bob and his workers came and moved all the furniture and redid the floors without sanding. I showed him an area that’s beyond awful I hadn’t even planned on doing. We found I had boards from the former owner in my storage unit. Bob worked with the board to make it perfect. There were a lot of complicated cuts but he did it and it looks absolutely amazing. He took the time that was needed so everything fit perfectly. I was so worried about this on my fix list for selling. I’m so relieved to have this project done I can’t tell you. Bob will give it to you straight. He won’t try to sell you on an expensive job you don’t need. He’ll take the time to explain your options. He doesn’t do a hard sell because he doesn’t need to. His work speaks for itself. He knows about all kinds of different home improvements because he’s done it. He’s done it for a long time. He fixed my faucet in one minute and that wasn’t on my list to be done. I had a few different people contact me when I reached out for help. Bob called me immediately and our appointment was for the next day. I wanted it done asap and he managed to schedule it so it was done in. few days. I know your going to be as happy as I am about working with Bob and his employees. His employees have been with him a long time and it’s clear they work in harmony. He has extensive experience and can explain everything to you as much as you want or need. Don’t even think about it. That project you need done or the one your just thinking about. Bob will answer all your questions. He’s like the guy your parents hired when you were a kid who was like one of the family. You need him in your address book for a variety of projects. I’m really glad he did such a great job helping me. My only regret is that I didn’t know him for the many years I owned homes in California and needed help."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

Minimum rates for handyman jobs typically range from $60-$100. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates:

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fees.

What do handymen charge per hour?

On average, you can expect to pay a handy person around $55 per hour. However, this cost can range between $35 and $80 per hour, depending on a number of factors. For instance, a handyman may charge a minimum fee of $50-$100 for small jobs that won’t take much of their time. The complexity of the job will affect the price as well. Your final price will also depend upon where you live, as certain regions have higher labor rates than others.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a handyman?

It’s worth it to hire a handyman in many cases. For example, you should hire a handyman when the project’s size and scope make it challenging to complete by yourself. These projects may include major home remodels or additions, foundation work or electrical/plumbing/HVAC-related tasks. However, make sure the handyman has the proper credentials or license to perform the necessary work.

You might also want to hire a handyman if a contractor’s price is too high. Handymen often charge less than general contractors, but contractors typically have the required license to perform certain tasks.

And, lastly, think about the complexity of the job and the cost of future repairs. It’s worth it to hire a handyman when the project is complex. Doing something incorrectly can wind up costing more than hiring the pro in the first place.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Do handymen offer remote or virtual services?

Because a handyman needs to be physically present to perform work, they have not traditionally offered remote or virtual services. However, if you come across handyman profiles that state they offer remote services, message the handymen to see what those services include.

Confer with your handyman to see if consulting over video calls is possible. The professional may be able to walk you through performing basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other types of repairs around the house. Compare the handymen in your area side-by-side online, and ask whether they’re willing to help remotely.

I recommend K&M Handyman Services. Fair price, good communication, good work quality. Kevin replaced my garbage disposal and fixed my toilet, which was running because of a bad job done by a previous handyman. Everything works fine, but Kevin told me to contact him if it doesn't, which I appreciate. I will contact Kevin again if I have other jobs around the home.

I've hired multiple handymen now, and Pejman's work quality is BY FAR the best I've seen. He did both some electrical work as well as general handyman work at my house, and he was great! He is very methodical and tests his work very carefully, which I don't see other handymen do as much. I highly recommend him!

The King of TV is also a spectacular handyman. He brought his tall ladder to change batteries in smoke detectors on a 12 foot ceiling and assembled some furniture ordered from Amazon. He was punctual, incredibly helpful, and efficient. He did all these tasks in less than an hour - we thought it would take someone two or 3 hours. He greatly exceeded expectations. Highly recommend!

The best experience with a handyman I've ever had. Mark was very efficient, honest and cordial. Although his hourly rate was on the higher end, I think it was fair given that he actually got things done in a very efficient manner compared to some others I have come across. And he happily took on additional tasks I identified while he was working on the pre-specified work items.

A team of two from Cutzal's handyman cleaned up my yard; they trimmed shrubs and hedges, cut back roses, hydrangeas, azaleas, did a lot of weeding especially in my succulents garden... They also fixed a front door that had eluded other handymen and fixed an outdoor garden shed that had fallen and was damaged by strong winds. They also cleaned up the trimmings. I will definitely be hiring them again as I was extremely pleased.!

Michael is amazing ! I had 2 curtain rods, 3 strands of lights, & 2 towel rings that need to be hung. He did everything & at a fair price. He’s excellent to work with: easygoing, communicative, & will even teach you a thing or two along the way. He takes his time & does each project accurately as he discusses his experience & explains his methods. I loved having him as my handyman for the evening! Hiring him was easy & I will absolutely be a repeat client!

Cruz never says no to any project. There is nothing too big or too small for him to do.He always has a positive can-do attitude that makes him a pleasant person to work with. On top of that, he is very patient. He did work around our office and we were not exactly sure how we wanted to do our projects. He offered his advise and expertise and got the job done very quickly. His work ethic and accuracy makes him our go-to handyman for all of our future projects.

Bill came to fix the weather strip of my condo unit front door. He was very thorough and used a few kind of strips to seal the gap properly (whereas the previous handyman only used one and didn’t seal it properly). Afterward he explained to me what the problem was and his approach to repair, patiently and in detail. I was very impressed and decided to inquire about redoing the tile and shower door in my bathroom. He gave me a few good suggestions about what could be done. If I do proceed with the job I will be interested in working with Bill again!

I was looking for a handyman to replace the kitchen sink faucet and came across a few profiles including Peter's. Among those I contacted, Peter was the first to respond! He was clear about the service requested and communicated clearly regarding what he could deliver, appointment scheduling and pricing. Peter was very considerate. He kept me posted about his arrival for the appointment and wore a mask while working. He always cleaned up the spot after completing the work, and even offered to take the unwanted part/junk away. I was impressed with his level of professionalism and decided to hire him to install a few curtain rods at home. As expected, the job was completed to my satisfaction. I see more collaboration with Peter in the future

Lucas and his assistant always responded quickly and gave us a detailed plan before committing to the work. He was very punctual and tried to accomplish so much in one day. They also cleaned up before leaving for the day. He was also able to match the older tiles and paint while replacing the shower in the bathroom. I had to knock down two stars because he fit the shower too low which won't work for a tall person. He came back and took a look at it, and he said he may need to use an adapter for the shower and left. He didn't respond to our calls/text ever since. I need to now look for another handyman to fix a problem he introduced, or even change the new shower he put in. Not very happy with how he left without completing the job. Poor work ethics.
