I worked with First Rate Tutors previously and every moment was a pleasure. Barry set everything up from students to meeting locations and organized everything efficiently and consistently. In addition, he made sure each student was adequately equipped with all of the latest equipment/tools necessary for the class. I would highly recommend First Rate Tutors.

I'm a California credentialed math teacher with 10 years of tutoring experience. If you want your child to learn how to stay on top of their pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, or algebra II class, I can help! I also help adults with a variety of classes, and test preparation. I come to your home, build rapport with the student, and work to help them become a better math student, and prepare for tests. When needed, I help with more than just the subject material. I can often help your student improve their note taking, studying, and test taking skills as well. I also have experience helping students gain the self awareness necessary to improve their focus, and keep their ADD/ADHD symptoms from undermining their attempts at improvement. Many of my students don't continue to need my help for long, because once they see that they can learn, they begin to build the necessary confidence, and acquire the needed skills to do well on their own. With your permission, I also contact your child's math teacher, and attempt to gain their insights into your child's needs. When available, I also provide free assistance via e-mail and phone in between tutoring sessions. I have a website where you can learn all about my background, services, and see references, and rate options. I look forward to connecting with you, so I can learn about your student's needs, and discuss how I can be of help! Rob Leavitt

An engineering student in Santa Barbara City College for the next semester, I've been living in France for the first 20 years of my life. I've already given many tutoring lessons in math, physics, and French in France. I like sharing my mother tongue skills with people. If you have any question, feel free to email or message me! I am offering my services as a seasoned one-on-one SAT tutor. My qualifications: I have a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Maryland. For two years during college, I tutored students taking Intermediate Macro and Microeconomics. Before moving to California, I worked as an after school tutor for the Baltimore City School System. I've also been a tutor here in Santa Barbara for two years, making this my fourth year of test-prep tutoring. In my experience with major test prep companies, I have found that SAT tutors generally receive about ten hours of training and teach dogmatically from a set curriculum. This amount of training is inadequate and the curriculum taught is too rigid to allow for the realization of maximum potential in a student. A student needs an instructor that has worked through a multitude of test questions and has independently developed multiple strategies for approaching even the most difficult SAT questions with confidence, comfort, and ease. It is a source of personal pride for me to say that I have worked through the vast majority of test prep material on market and separated the quality training material from the fluffy dross that populates the bookshelves at your local bookstore. I have developed my own style of SAT training that is custom tailored to every student. In just a few hours, my students command a complete understanding of the test itself and many strategies used to improve (and later perfect) overall scores. From there I focus on building skills quickly and effectively through intense "answer and review" sessions that improve scores every single lesson. Every student has strengths and weaknesses when it comes to taking the SAT. Our goal together will be to identify weak points quickly and to fill in those gaps with directed practice. The rates I offer are quite reasonable and I teach from many convenient locations in the Santa Barbara area. If you are interested, contact me via email or phone and I will schedule a time for us to meet. Also, find me on craigslist.

Math can be notoriously known for not being for everyone and difficult to grasp. At Squared Tutoring, I take pride in providing my students with a simple, yet effective way to grasp mathematical concepts by providing alternative views on equations to ultimately understand the subject. My four years of tutoring experience has resulted in continued success in friends, classmates, and referrals. I truly enjoy math and am lucky to be involved with it in my daily job as an accountant. Throughout my high school and college years, I had continously tutored friends and classmates and was often referred to others to assist with their mathematical needs.

I'm a professional tutor, and I'm a few weeks away from receiving my CA teaching credential, so the experience is definitely there!

I am as independent of a musician as you will ever fine. I am completely self motivated, and my style is unique. If you're exclusively looking for a teacher to guide you through the standard classical approaches I'm probably not your guy, but if you're looking through a teacher who is knowledgeable and mindful of theory and technique while recognizing the value of exploration and playfulness in music I might be your right guy. My goal is to draw my students closer to their own creative passions. Writing, singing, playing, sharing time and love with people

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future.
