I was having a Halloween / 50th Birthday party. At my home. Chef Marcel adapted to my needs. The food was served promptly and hot. They also served the Bday Cake. A gentleman in a black cape kept taking platters from me after I passed Jello Shots! He also took care of all the trash- so when I got up the next morning there was very little cups ... to pick up! They enabled me to circulate with my friends without worry. The servers were friendly and the kitchen clean up was excellent! I would use Chef Marcel and associates again when needed. Thank you!

Easy communication through email and text, organized and helpful when it came to making decisions on cake design and flavor. Cassidy held a cake tasting at my home with my friends and family, making the process of choosing a cake flavor fun and exciting! On the day of my wedding, the cake was delivered and assembled beautifully!

In an intimate dinner party for 6, Michaelangelo was charming, amusing, and very patient with a group of rowdy fantasy chefs who crowded him to watch his preparations. This made for an evening (by design) which was both gratifying to the senses--when the delicious 6 courses were served--and the intellect for those who were serious about the culinary arts! Superb!

Had Chef Kim over to our Airbnb for a cooking lesson and it was excellent! She was very well prepared and even gave us print out recipes to take home. She was very detailed in her instructions and the food was delicious. She even helped us clean up after the meal. Would recommend her to anyone looking for a fancy dinner party or cooking class for a small group.

Betti was fantastic!! She was very responsive and catered to our requests. She showed up right when she said she would and left the kitchen spotless when she was done. The meal was absolutely delicious, from the appetizers all the way to dessert. Her banana foster was probably the best dessert I’ve ever had! I would highly recommend her to anyone in the area looking for a private chef!

Mary and her team provided a customized 5-course meal for my friend's bachelorette I was hosting. Mary was very helpful in the menu design, suggesting various dishes and complimentary side dishes based on my descriptions of the bride's likes and dislikes. On the day of the event, Mary and her team were prompt and on time arriving at the house, and brought all of their own supplies with them which included all of the ingredients, cooking utensils, dishes, glasses and silverware. Mary and her staff were incredibly friendly, and got straight to work, creating some of the most delicious foods I've had. One of which was homemade artisanal herbed bread, that we all devoured. There wasn't a single complaint from our group of 12 women, and the Bride was over-the-moon happy to indulge in all of her favorite dishes, including a divine chocolate & raspberry cake for dessert. Overall, I would highly recommend Mary for anyone looking to hire an talented, professional chef.

We hired Chef Darrell David for a surprise welcoming party for my Mother. My mother is from South America so we challenged Darrell to make food that she would be familiar to and appreciate and Darrell did NOT disappoint. He came fully prepared and he did his homework! We didn't have to tell him what to make, he already knew what she would enjoy. It was a pleasant evening and once we were finished my mother asked him all sorts of questions on the food and Darrell answered every single one with perfect responses. We will definitely be hiring Darrell again in the future!

My partner and I are busy individuals who recently decided to shift to a plant-based diet. We had no idea what to do, how to get protein (lol) and what to cook. Bekah came highly recommended from a friend who has been using her personal chef services for quite a while now. Bekah's knowledge of vegan cooking and plant-based nutrition was obvious during our first consultation. When we tasted her food, the deal was sealed. Whenever we are in town we have her cook us lunches and dinners to keep our diets on track and energy levels up! She can satisfy any craving or cuisine choice. Can't recommend Bekah enough, if you are ready to get your health and diet in order without giving up any taste or flavor, get on with it and give Bekah a call!!

We have used Christina for dinner parties in our home plus ordered meals to go when we travel. Her items are nutritious and tasty as well as creative. She will work with you on food allergies and how to make items satisfying. I can't count how many times we've used her services last minute because I was too busy to put together a menu. She is very accomodating and professional as well as a wonderful chef.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
