Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Sonny was very responsive when asked for a quote to replace the roof of a home we were considering to purchase. I asked him if he could inspect the existing wood shingle roof without walking on it because the shingles are very old and cracked. He said “No problem, I’ll use a drone!” Wow I thought. The other roofer I got a quote from walked all over the old roof and didn’t offer to use a drone. Sonny’s quote was very competitive and I would have hired him had we proceeded with purchase of the house.

I had 2 small leaks in our concrete tile roof. Julio came out the same day with a reasonable bid. Then he and his crew repaired the roof areas the next day! They cut out the damaged pressboard/plywood, put in new pressboard, underlayment, new 1x2s, and replaced all of the tiles. Even took photos before and after of the damage and work done. That helped to see what was done. The leaks were repaired. We even beat the coming storms. Great job! I’m very satisfied. I’d highly recommend Reco Roofing and Julio.

Daniel responded quickly, came in and gave a reasonable estimate on the spot, scheduled the date within a week. He replaced asphalt shingles on 400 sf roof over the addition in 2 days. He worked efficiently and quickly and took care not to damage surrounding plans , left job site neat and clean. He used Tiger Paw™("a premium, UV-stabilized polypropylene underlayment") and shingles that perfectly matched the rest of the house. He is such a pleasure to work with, he inspected the roof on the rest of the house and took care of loose nails and flashing. I would definitely hire Daniel for my next roof projects.

I needed a new roof, gutters, and repair of some roof sheathing that had developed dry rot as a result of faulty gutters. Mag roofing is a family business consisting of the Gutierrez father and his three sons. They were all professional, knowledgeable, dependable, and charming. Charming roofers? Yes. They explained what they were going to do and why. They showed me some water damage that was discovered after they took the old roofing off. They taught me that the suburban contractor who built the my house in the early 1970's had not put enough downspouts in the gutters and added two more to the job. They finished the job on time, and left the area tidy and safe at the end of each day. The job took a week from start to finish. I am retired and was interested in the work being done. We all shared our family histories, as we spent time getting the project done. We shared laughs and philosophies. We finished the project as friends. Their hard work, warm hearts, and commitment to quality work, was more than I had expected from having a roof put on my house. Charming roofers? Give them a chance. You will be pleased.

PLEASE BE AWARE THIS MAN IS A SCAMMER. There is a reason why Fernando has received strongly negative reviews. Fernando reached out through Thumbtack for my project which consists of tying in skylights to my shingle roof. He came by and I showed him the roof. We agreed to the price of $800 for labor and materials and he says he will show up at 9AM on Friday (he originally quoted me through Thumbtack $650 but when he came and actually evaluated the roof he said the counter flashing will cost more money and it will cost $800). I said ok see you then. Friday arrives and I texted him to confirm that he will be there at 9AM. He then mentions for the first time he has another guy there. I was surprised to hear that because the entire time he always said he will be the one doing the job. I then asked what time the other man will be done so I can check on the work since I've never talked to this person or heard of his qualifications. Fernando does not respond to that question but confirms he will be sending me an invoice which includes a 1 year warranty. I stopped by my house to talk to the new guy and he’s a nice guy but no experience with residential roofing. He just started working on commercial roofing over 1.5 years ago so very much new to roofing and has no experience in residential roofing. I call Fernando to let him know this young man has no experience in residential roofing and you need to come here yourself to get this work done. He said fine and we agreed that he would stop by on Monday at 8:30 AM to finish the roof. He also asks me to Venmo him $200 for materials to do the job. I Venmo’ed him $200 so he can pay for the materials. Sunday night arrives and I texted him to confirm about Monday, no response. Monday morning arrives and he doesn’t show up. Per the other reviews, this is not uncommon for him to ghost and not show up per his commitments. Call him multiple times and no answer. Call him multiple times again on Tuesday and it goes straight to voicemail which means he now has blocked my calls. I message him through thumbtack and I have included our conversation thread for other customers to take a look at. I will report this man to Thumbtack and strongly encourage them to kick him off their platform. He is a pathological liar and I do not believe he’s someone you want to bring into your house. The way he has stolen $200 from me I would not be surprised if he has stolen multiple times before. Avoid this man at all costs!

Geo Tafolla has successfully completed replacing the roof on our separate garage, and, all new gutters on our home. He was prompt, supervised the job, and made sure that we were satisfied as the job was progressing. They were conscientious and considerate and cleaned up well. Most importantly, and most appreciated, he listened and followed the wishes of an experienced and skilled DIYer with specific ideas on how he wanted the job done! We are waiting for the materials to do a somewhat complicated repair job on another structure, and from our initial experience with GT Roofing, we are confident it will be as successful.

Jon was very easy to communicate with before the job. He went beyond what we had agreed upon, doing a review of our roof to look for potential issues and nailing down a few loose items. Will be happy to work with Jon again in the future!
