Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

I found KZ Renovations (Kirill Zibrov) on All 5-star reviews. My project was a tile overlay on a poured concrete front entry and a poured concrete rear patio (8’x18’x28” high). This is a new home and I was tired of looking at concrete. I found my tiles at Arizona Tile. They measured 12”x24” and have an R-11 Anti-slip finish which is added right before the tiles go in the kiln. That R-11 Anti-slip name is trademarked to AZ Tile. Each tile cost $8.84. So I contacted Kirill and he and his helper came over to verify my measurements for the number of tiles. I picked up the tile and Kirill and his helper started March 9, 2020 and finished March 12. His work is perfection, including the grouting. I wish I could have checked value & punctuality also, but only can check 3 boxes. Kirill and his helper are totally professional and real gentlemen. You will not be disappointed if you select KZ Renovations. You are welcome to email me I could not get the attached photos to align correctly. Sorry.

James did an excellent job installing our back splash and fireplace surround. He does quality work, gave a fair price, and is friendly and professional. He provided a few different design ideas for tile layout as well which we ultimately went with his expertise on. I would definitely recommend James to anyone who is doing tile installation. In fact, I have already recommended him to multiple coworkers and my parents. Any future tile work, or any kind of remodel I have done, I will definitely give James a call.

Excellent customer experience and beautiful tile work. Damien was considerate of his work surroundings, paid great attention to detail and surpassed my expectations. We had a marble hexagon tile backsplash to install, which was a beautiful product in its own right, but his care with the install brough our kitchen to life. I would definitely recommend him to friends and family.

I had a great experience with Thiago and his partner. I selected an unusual tile for my laundry room, and they did a fantastic job installing it! They were prompt, efficient, clean and my wall looks amazing! Ihad them use black grout, which I know is a total pain to clean during install, but they did a fantastic job, and left the room and wall completely clean. I was so impressed, I had them quote a large wall in my great room. Now I just have to find the right tile for my next project with them!

To me, the three most important factors for a contractor are quality of work, timeliness, and respect for the customers. Cesar nailed all three. My tile project was quite large, including 4 bathrooms, a half-bath, and a laundry room. It included demolition, installation of an electric floor heater in the master bath, and installation of tile on floors and on shower/tub walls. Cesar paid close attention to the details. Some of the attached photos show how he was very careful to make sure seams, corners, and edges line up correctly. He listened to what I wanted when determining the orientation of the tiles and the position of decorative trim. He involved me whenever questions about specific details. He started on schedule and came almost every day, always informed me on the very few days when not coming. I never had to wonder whether he would show up. He stayed with my job until finished. A job like this involves both contractor and customer. Here are some things I did to help the job go smoothly; perhaps these will help your project as well: (1) I had all the material on hand before the job started. (2) I accepted some disruption, with floor/furniture coverings in the house, and with tools and material filling much of my garage. Cesar and his crew worked hard to keep the mess under control, but large jobs will always have some degree of noise and mess. (3) There were two big parts of my job that Cesar was not doing, plumbing and cabinets, and I made sure to finish them in time to keep from delaying the tile work.

I am very satisfied with the work that was done. Caesar took his time to ensure evey line was perfect and every measurement was exact. Due to the awkward shape of the tile, and the windows in our kitchen this was not an easy job. Caesar got it done and got it done perfectly. He was very professional, clean, and reliable. I would definitely recommend. Thanks!!!

Hire this man! Terry is professional and the quality of his work cannot be beat. He does not cut corners. Terry did a large project for me that included an entire main floor, 3 bathrooms and 2 sets of stairs. I could not be any more satisfied with the way the project turned out. You cannot go wrong with TAC Tile.

I had an outstanding experience with TruBlue. They installed a kitchen backsplash, fireplace tile, installed some lights, and mounted TVs at my home. The work was high quality with solid attention to detail and great customer service. They aren’t the cheapest around, but the pricing is fair, and the workmanship is worth the money. I’d highly recommend TruBlue for whatever home project you might have!

Thiago and his partner did a great job. They always arrived on time and they were very professional. The work they did was excellent. Attention to detail. My front porch and walkway look great. The price was also very good. I will hire them again for what ever I need in my home. They do a lot of other things except tiles (dry wall etc) Thanks for your great work.
