Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Christian did a great job, was friendly and was very affordable! We had tiles coming up on our shower seat so we acquired the quartz seat to replace the tiles and Christian installed it in a few hours time. I would recommend Avila Tile for sure.

I hired LT Flooring to remove the old tile in my shower and around my tub and install new tile. Their quote was fair, they finished on time, and they did a great job. I'm very happy with everything and plan on having them tile my second bathroom very soon.

All I can say is wow. Not only are they extremely fair with pricing but they do a bang up job. I couldn't be happier with the work they provided and customer service. They were able to work around my busy schedule to give me a quote and install the tile. We had to remove an old shower system that was capped over old tile from the 80s. They removed everything down to stud, replaced the plumbing and installed everything else from there. We had a customer shower pan and slope installed and they did amazing. I will be using them again for all of our future tiles projects. Thank you guys! Photos of before and after. Next we need glass shower door and walls.

Beautiful work done by the Avila Tile team! Cristian was very easy to work with and provided a fair price for our job. The project consisted of installing floor and wall tile in our new basement bathroom. After starting the project some additional work was required to remedy the shower floor and walls, the price was fair to complete the work. We appreciate the time and precision the team spent to install the tile. It was obvious that Cristian wanted to get it right and takes pride in his work. Thank you for bringing my vision to life! The team was also very nice and friendly to my dogs. I would highly recommend the team. Thanks again!

He clearly is very junior in Tile installation. Although we did not have the most basic tile installation for a backsplash, he was found to be very limited in the quality and quite frankly had to check frequently to advise and assist. We also, based on the efforts, have to take on additional costs to replace and repair wood trim-work at the base of our cabinets that was cut poorly, mis-cut and cut to short. Needless to say, I would not recommend him for an existing workplace where he says he can do it but the results just simply are not there.

After calling around to several different tile guys in the area, we decided to go with Felipe to do our master bathroom tile. We had some pretty tricky tile (patterns, sizes, etc) we had chosen, which seemed to scare away a few different installers.. but not Felipe. He was excited for the challenge and he did NOT disappoint! His prices were very reasonable, he was very personable both in person and over text and his work was done extremely well. We had a slight miscommunication over placement of some of the tile around the bathtub surround, but he was able to fix it for me to make sure I had no regrets with the end result. I highly recommend Felipe to anyone looking for a great tile job at an affordable price! I am extremely satisfied with the work he did for us.

Met Alex using Thumbtack. He was on time to go over project and give me some insights I had not thought of. I hired him to install wall tiles in my salon, he did fantastic work at a very fair price. He was conscious of ensuring to cover the flooring and items that may be affected by work. He did such a great job I had him back today to install wood mosaic in the entry and will have him out to tile bathrooms on another project I have. Did not have photos handy, but very impressed with his work ethic and top notch quality If you need pretty much anything done, Alex and his team are awesome. I look forward to many future project using A’s Tile Brian S.

Wellness Walk-In Tubs did an amazing job on our bathroom floor! We used smaller tile and chose a herringbone pattern, it definitely wasn't an easy install but Sean made it look easy. Pricing was extremely reasonable, they had the lowest quote out of the five I received. Office staff and crew were very professional and polite through the entire process. I highly recommend choosing Wellness Walk-In Tubs for any tiling or bathroom project you have. I will be having them back out to install the toilet, vanity/sink, and baseboards in a few weeks once I have picked everything picked out. I have nothing but positive things to say about Wellness Walk-In Tubs and will use them for all future tiling and bathroom projects!!!

There was an issue with the first installation and they came back and replaced it at their cost without any hassle. They even offered to replace it with more expensive tile since the original was out of stock. Once they fixed the issue it turned out great. I will use them again.

Ivan did a terrific job on installing our kitchen backsplash, we are so thrilled with how it turned out and how well of a job he did and at a very reasonable price for such good quality work. He was very responsive, did quick work throughout installation, and was communicative throughout the process of the timeline and how it was going. We will definitely be hiring him in the future for our tiling needs!

Scott was very detailed and effective. He was extremely responsive and willing to work with my busy schedule and short time frame. I only needed the bottom row of backsplash installed due to countertop renovations. I wasn’t sure if he would do a small job for me, but he went above and beyond to accommodate me. I am so happy with the way my kitchen tile project went! Fast, efficient, and affordable. Awesome job!

Jarek was amazing to work with! After months of unreliable contractors that weren't completing quality work, I am so happy we finished our project with Jarek! I only wish we would have hired him sooner! He installed our large encaustic cement tile backsplash and bathroom's marble mosaic and marble subway tile. Everything is extremely precise and lined up perfectly! He even took it upon himself to remove a couple dozen tiny pieces of marble from our mosaic and replaced them, because the color was a bit darker than the rest - I noticed them myself, but thought it was being too picky if I mentioned them. He even tore out our previous contractor's poorly done shower pan and remade it correctly, without hesitation. I would trust Jarek to complete a large project on his own, without even checking in on the progress. He has a great work ethic, shows up on time every day, is very meticulous and takes a lot of pride in work. He also put tarps down, covering his walkway through our home and cleaned up his work site every day. I hire a lot of contractors for a living and can't say enough good things about him. He'll be my first call, next time I need any renovations done!
