We asked Connie to do a private dinner in our Stapleton home for our 10th Anniversary and she delivered an incredible meal and experience! She worked with us on the menu beforehand, brought everything we would need for dinner including linens and candles, and even gave us a few cooking pointers! Her ancho cured duck prosciutto was amazing, the lavender cured salmon tartar, fantastic, and the braised short ribs were as good, if not better than any we've had in a restaurant! She was fun, but not intrusive company and left our kitchen cleaner than she found it. We enjoyed the experience so much, we are having her do another in-home dinner for us and another couple in a few weeks!

Maggie provided excellent, professional service for our Holiday department lunch. She showed up early to set up and was vey accommodating. Everyone raved about the food. We had a tight budget to work with and Maggie was my pick after speaking with 4 other caterers. I highly recommend Mezcla Maggie's Catering and will definitely use her again. I have also passed along her contact info/services to other departments in our company.

Our bartender, Mark, was very good. He was friendly and made an extra effort to make sure people were comfortable. We hired the Crazy Caterer for a company picnic, there were no mixed drinks, it was pretty low key. We held a volleyball tournament, and while everyone was watching/participating with the sporting event, Mark went around and made sure everyone had bottled water. That was very cool. I would definitely use the Crazy Caterer again.

I can’t believe how amazing Pour La France was for our wedding. I have been involved in others’ weddings but I have never experienced the level of helpfulness, thoughtfulness, throughness and professionalism that Pour La France brought to our wedding. From the beginning of the process 8 months ago to the end of our wedding night, they were more helpful than I ever expected and definitely more than I’ve ever seen with other caterers for other weddings. They listened to our specific desires and tweaked details in our tasting session (which was so fun!!) and they even included services on the day of the wedding that were unconventional, just because I said we were stressed about them. They helped with set up and clean up and all of my relatives and friends who helped out with the wedding told me how sweet and helpful they were. They took so much stress off of the day for me and ny husband and was invaluable to us. Plus the food was AWESOME and everyone said so.

Dustin made the most incredible brunch buffet for a Bachelorette/shower for 10 women. He was so professional and the food was out of this world! Everyone was raving that it was the best of "everything." He was very responsive throughout the planning process and made sure everything I requested was done to perfection! I cannot recommend him and his services enough! I will definitely be using him again.

We hired Nancy and team for a holiday dinner for 18 people this season and the team was great. Nancy was great to work with in planning the evening and the team of 3 that came to help cook and serve were very professional and helped the evening flow perfectly. I would highly recommend Sparrow Kitchen for catering for a dinner party, food was great, Nancy was very responsive and helped make our event very elegant.

I enjoyed working with this catering company! The food was pretty good and the catering delivery had the challenge of getting the food out & presentable very quietly, which went well. I had to take a star off because the chicken was undercooked on the two meals set aside for our folks with dietary restrictions and delivery on the second day was about 20 minutes late. Overall, the experience was good and I will keep them in the list of caterers for future events.

OMG! XIM is amazing. Let me start by saying how accommodating they were. Our first menu go around was a bit out of our budget and Lenny worked with me to find a better fit. Anyone who has ever planned a big event will appreciate what I was told on the day of our party - "the only thing I need you to do today is nothing!" What? I actually got to relax while Lenny and XIM put on a fabulous dinner. The décor they brought matched perfectly with our venue. It was gorgeous and inviting. The food - I crave the chicken mole still. Can I suggest trying their salsas? They serve them with organic blue corn tortilla chips and it is a great way to start any event. We also had some guests with food issues and XIM made sure to accommodate them. Everywhere I turned to take care of something, XIM had already done it. They anticipate your needs and on a scale of 1-10 for service, I give them a 15. Everyone at our event took their cards and we have already been recommending them to others. By far, the best caterer I have ever hired. Thank you XIM! I know we will meet again.

Tri-Stone Catering did a great job for us, and the owner Matthew was fantastic! He was easy to work with, professional, offered great suggestions, always prompt, and of course is an amazing chef! We hosted a Christmas dinner for 17 friends. Matthew made a multi-course meal that was prepared in our home. Everything came off without a hitch. Not only did he prepare the meal, he served it, and cleaned everything up along the way. While Matthew did the heavy lifting, we could focus on our guests and really relax and enjoy their company...amazing! We highly recommend Tri-Stone Catering & Matthew for your event and we look forward to hiring him again. Thanks Matthew!

On May 17, 2017, our group had the pleasure of enjoying a catered meal from Three Chicks. The meal was delivered on time and served to all us with smiles and pleasantries. That was surpassed by the quality of the meal that we all leisurely ate and relaxed as the Three Chicks staff attended to our needs for a pleasant evening.

Magnifique has to be one of the best caterers we have ever had! Not only did the chef and servers show up early, they helped set up for parts of the event that weren't their responsibility. Overall, we had a great wedding and wouldn't hesitate to book again!

Chef Alec catered my wedding, and he did a fantastic job. People came up to me all throughout the reception and the next day telling me how much they loved the food. At most weddings I've been to, the dinner is usually not something to comment on or is not something people remember, but it was definitely a highlight of our wedding day. We had a very unique flavor profile in mind since my husband is from Hawai'i, and Chef Alec was able to capture exactly what we were looking for. We were able to share with our guests the flavors we love and now some of them are going to seek out Hawaiian food and even asked if he has a restaurant where they can be served the same meal again - I don't know how much higher of a compliment I can give than that! He was also professional and thoughtful and we felt like we were in great hands the whole way through the planning process. Mahalo Chef Alec!

Copacabana Grill catered our wedding in New Mexico for 100 guests, and literally almost every single person commented that this was not only the best wedding food they ever had, but one of the best meals, period! Regis and his crew were amazingly kind, professional, fun, and on top of everything. Regis was also super organized and up front with everything he needed for the event, and he was super responsive and communicative. I can not say enough great things about Copacabana Grill and the wonderful people who worked so hard to make our wedding so special! I highly, highly recommend them and am looking forward to finding another opportunity to work with them in the future.

Shane was great to work with and was very responsive when I had questions. He even altered his sides to be veggie friendly, provided gluten free pies for dessert and even made bbq tofu for our non-meat eaters. My teammates (150+) ate every bit of food put out for them at our employee picnic/season wrap party and raved that it was delicious. I would hire BBQ Kings again in a heart beat and recommend them to anyone looking for great BBQ variety!

Trisha cooked for our family for four years (until we moved away), and she was truly a lifesaver. Not only did she help us make sure we had healthy, home-cooked meals for our family- despite our exhaustion with working full time and having two young kids - but her food is so delicious! Compared to the cost of eating out, it really is very reasonable (and much healthier) to have Trisha cook for you. Trisha also completely accommodated all of our preferences and food allergies (gluten and dairy) with no problem at all. I miss her yummy cooking!

I have had the pleasure of having Veronica's cooking many times. Most recently, Veronica catered my bridal shower. The food was not only delicious- but the detail that went into making each dish beautiful was incredibly impressive. The guests that attended the shower raved about the food for weeks after the event. Every dish Veronica makes, she puts a ton of love in and it really is reflected in the final product. I cannot recommend her enough.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
