Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Can you tile over a tile backsplash?

Yes, you can tile over your existing kitchen backsplash if you want a fresh, new look. This will only work if the surface is smooth and there are no cracked or uneven backsplash tiles in the wall. If you have a few problem tiles, simply remove and reinstall them before you tile over the wall.

In general, it’s better to start with a blank wall. However, you may save time by simply tiling over your existing tile backsplash. When in doubt, always consult a tiling professional.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

What is the easiest backsplash to install?

Peel-and-stick tiles are the easiest backsplash to install, as they don’t require any materials or preparation work besides measuring.

Ceramic tile, a popular choice for many homeowners, is a fairly simple installation choice for backsplash, and it comes in almost any color and pattern.

Glass tile is a bit more difficult to install than ceramic, while stone or marble tile tends to be the most expensive.

The Tile King was great, I was able to get the tile installed perfectly. The demo went quickly and the install was perfect. I purchased my own supplies and I ran out of grout, they stayed late to allow me to purchase more grout so they could finish the job. Will definitely user them again.

I honestly could not be more pleased with the results of this project. Jorge and Ernesto went above and beyond to make sure this project looked polished. I have an old, 75 year old, house and the tile work they did in the kitchen has made this old kitchen actually look modern. They also went above and beyond in cutting a granite counter top to help the oven fit better, finding a really cool tile to make a windowsill look clean and new, installing new light fixtures in the kitchen, installing open shelving on top of the tile they had just installed, etc. Every “extra” thing I asked for they did without hesitation. Highly recommend them.

I would highly recommend Lotus Tile and Chris. Chris was very responsive and professional, and the fireplace turned out great. It took a long time to find someone to work on the project that we could trust as we have had some bad experiences in the past with tile installers. We really lucked out when when we stumbled upon Lotus Tile. We will use Chris again for any future projects and would not hesitate recommending Lotus Tile and Chris to friends and family.

Cristian with Avila Tile is very professional and got me on his schedule quickly. He tiled the threshold of our large shower in preparation for a shower door install. One of the bolts to our toilet was broke off so he fixed that and reset the toilet with a new ring. Cristian cuts tile with great precision and his work is high quality. He has a good team that he works with. His prices are competitive and I believe fair. I would recommend Avila Tile to my family and friends and would call him on future projects.

Very dishonest contractor. The contractor told me as common practice, they do NOT install wonderboard with thin-set as instructed and required for warranty by the manufacturer. A simple google and YouTube search will explain this. Not only that, but after saying he would in fact install the wonderboard with thin-set mortar, he did not. After asking him why he would not install with thin-set, he said I did not need it and then explained how it would cost extra. Luckily another much more experienced tile contractor noticed immediately and warned me that this would in fact diminish the integrity of the installation. Unfortunately, I will be headed to small claims court with this contractor. Do NOT hire this contractor if you would like a quality installation and HONEST upfront pricing. I would not recommend this contractor to anyone who wants a quality installation. Homeowners BEWARE.

Tofoya Tile has exceeded any expectations I had. Best tile design mind and installer in the business. Had two very complex designs that required tons of patience, cuts and attention to detail. The steps he puts forward to ensure waterproof/leak proof jobs is amazing!!! He takes his time! Exceptionally clean and concerned with dust/debris. Always shows up on time and leaves a clean area. The tile job and process is outstanding. Gives you an upfront price and sticks with it. Doesn't rush or change pace/price after contract and job starts. One of kind in construction. His cut-outs and layout is so exceptional. Thinks through every detail, including how shampoo cut-outs will drain. I will post pictures soon, waiting on windows in bath to be done.

Andrew did an excellent job on the tile/remodel of the bathroom in my 1928 bungalow. He is extremely hardworking and detail oriented, and always found a solution when unexpected problems came up in the job. Originally, I thought this would be a tile job with minor repairs, but, once the old tile was off, we discovered that there was extensive water damage hiding underneath and, unfortunately, a major remodel was needed. Andrew did all the demolition work and did additional plumbing and electrical work, basically recreating my bathroom from the floor up, with only the original cast iron bathtub remaining. He repositioned a poorly placed air conditioning/heating vent, and installed a new toilet and a new bathroom vanity/sink combination, and helped me design the new tilework. I am extremely satisfied with the final result and give Fischer Construction my highest recommendation.

Nabil's price was very reasonable and he is very meticulous and thorough in his work. I had him install a glass subway tile backsplash in my kitchen and his work is wonderful. It looks very clean and neat and I am very happy with the quality of his work. It is clear he takes pride in his work. I highly recommend him.

Jarek did an amazing job on our kitchen backsplash. He was able to fit us in his busy schedule and accommodated the job on his off day in order to get our project done in time. He worked, quickly, neatly, and consulted me at numerous points in the install to make sure the tiles were laid out the way we wanted. The end product looks fantastic and we couldn't be happier! We will definitely hire Jarek again for the next project.

We have worked with a lot of contractors and Don and Katie were some of the best. They took care to protect our floors and counters while installing our backsplash and kept our kitchen clean. They were patient with our decision making and were very knowledgeable with what they do. They also took their time to make sure the tile job was not only completed to our expectations, but their expectations too. We would recommend Devil Dog to others and plan on using them for future projects too.

Dave was very professional, always on time, and took the time to do the job right. I appreciated how reliable he was and his attention to detail. He completed a subway tile backsplash, installed a faucet, gas cooktop, as well as an outdoor light fixture. He adjusted many little things in my kitchen that were off (cabinet hinges, doors) and did some painting for me. I think he can do it all in terms of home improvement and I would definitely work with him in the future and recommend him for other projects.

Steve, was a pleasure to work with! He installed tile in two complete bathroom remodels, kitchen wall and fireplace wall. He is very skilled and attentive to detail. I would say that my remodel was extensive and Steve helped me navigate all phases of the project. He removed an old bathtub and installed a custom shower pan that turned out beautiful. He was very responsive, on time and came prepared to complete my project. His bid was in the middle of the road, not the lowest or highest but fair. Steve is just a really nice and honest guy who works hard at customer satisfaction. As with any project, upon completion I had a small problem, I called Steve and he showed up on the same day to complete the repair. I hope to refer Steve to my neighbors and friends as a thanks.
