Mike and his helper were fantastic. They cleaned four 9x 11, two 3x8, and one 4 ft round area rug, as well as the set of stairs leading to the basement and our 20x12 family room wall to wall carpet. They cleaned tile and grout in 2 bathrooms and a 4x4 stone entryway. All tile floors look brand new. This was especially nice as I didn't know they did tile and grout when scheduling-it was a spur of the moment add on. I could not be more pleased. One of the runners was Very stained and smelly. Stains are gone and it's now odorless. They came prepared to move the large pieces of furniture and helped me put everything- large and small back where I had it. They arrived on time and were gone in just a little over 2 hrs. And on top of all this they left my carpets dry and all warranties intact. I will definitely use Magic Dry services again!

We had Marc do some plumbing work (installing drain pipes, disposal, faucet) in our kitchen and master bath. We liked him so much that we asked him to replace drywall in our kitchen, install tile backsplash, add an electrical outlet and hang a microwave. Marc did a great job with all these projects. Highly recommend!

Forrest Ponder recently completed a complete gut and renovation of our 1957 master bathroom. The renovation included installation of a bathtub, toilet, double sink vanity, a shower with glass doors, a new window replacement, and radiant tile flooring. We are very happy with the way that the project turned out and Forrest was really easy to work with. He was great at listening to our wants/needs for the project and then carrying out our vision. He was quite concerned with making sure that we were happy, and corrected anything that we were not 100% satisfied with on the first round. He was detail oriented and kept our house clean throughout the project. Our bathroom renovation turned out great, and we would highly recommend Forrest for your next project.

Dave was very professional, always on time, and took the time to do the job right. I appreciated how reliable he was and his attention to detail. He completed a subway tile backsplash, installed a faucet, gas cooktop, as well as an outdoor light fixture. He adjusted many little things in my kitchen that were off (cabinet hinges, doors) and did some painting for me. I think he can do it all in terms of home improvement and I would definitely work with him in the future and recommend him for other projects.

Josiah made time within his busy schedule to fit me in and repair a plumbing issue with the ice maker in my refrigerator. Since it has been a recurring problem I asked him if he could repair it in a way that would provide a permanent solution.Josiah is skilled and experienced enough to provide a well thought out and permanent repair within a couple of hours. Rates were very reasonable and I would not hesitate to work with him in the future. I am comfortable recommending him for plumbing and repair/remodeling issues.

I've contracted with Steve twice. Once last summer to install a round, flagstone patio. Not only does Steve pay particular attention to detail, he also gave us some good ideas on how to connect to our existing sidewalk. Secondly, Steve just completed an update of our guest bath with a new porcelain tile floor and shower surround. Beautiful! Steve showed up on time, removed all unused materials and cleaned up afterward!

Marc was prompt in his bid and responding to my questions. He communicates with text and voice mail. Marc came up to Evergreen to clean my dirty VCT tiled floor to make it presentable for selling. He did a fantastic job and his final cost was exactly what he bid. No hidden costs or last minute increases. He was professional, reliable and honest. Marc's estimate was HALF the cost of other bids! I would recommend him to others and would use MSC again without hesitation. Thank you Marc for helping us with this project and helping us make our commercial property look good.

From the moment I met with Mike D'Angelo to discuss a deck replacement on a home I was planning to purchase, I had a pretty strong feeling he was honest, knowledgeable and competent. I since learned he can do pretty much any project from the ground up and he and his crew just finished replacing my marble tile flooring with hardwoods, reconfiguring a 3-way gas fireplace including new stonework and taking out some corner and over-the staircase shelving units. I didn't give him much lead time but he was able to make everything happen within my time frame. He listened carefully to what I was looking for and came up with some great suggestions that I ended up using. He also proved to be a one-stop shop and whatever I thought of doing, he either could get it done or knew someone else who could. I highly recommend using Mike and All Universal. I have already signed up for a painting project and plan to use his services for my deck replacement in the spring.

I'm very satisfied with Doug's work and reasonable price. I just love my new wood like tile floor! We had a little trouble understanding each other at times (his first language is Portuguese) but we communicated with text messages and pictures that worked out well. I would definitely hire him again and recommend his workmanship.

The Tile King was great, I was able to get the tile installed perfectly. The demo went quickly and the install was perfect. I purchased my own supplies and I ran out of grout, they stayed late to allow me to purchase more grout so they could finish the job. Will definitely user them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.
