Perfect! I requested catering services very last minute since my previous caterer canceled and Chef chris came to my rescue! He was so helpful and accommodating and I felt relieved the second I spoke with him. The event was flawless and It was a blessing in disguise that the previous caterer canceled because I got to experience NY Catering Service. Can’t wait to do this again. Thanks!!

Initially contacted Rich to do the bartending at my 50th birthday party. After discussing my catering plans with Rich, he proposed that he stays in the kitchen and coordinates the food while he brings in additional people to help with the bar and serving the food. I am very happy with Rich in the way he managed the kitchen and the servers. In summary I would say Rich personally did an excellent job and would have no hesitation in recommending him. Rich and his crew cleaned up everything after the party. We only had a minimum amount to do the next day.

Adolfo is UNBELIEVABLE! He is truly a professional caterer- reliable, knowledgable, efficient, friendly, and knows how to make GREAT food! Everyone of our guests commented how creative the appetizers were and how delicious the entree/buffet items were....it was also evident in the numerous second-helpings that most guests had! Adolfo helped decrease the stress and anxiety surrounded by planning a wedding, and made sure everything was PERFECT down to the last detail! He runs his catering service like a well-oiled machine, and even delivered the alcohol to the event! He is one-of-a kind and we HIGHLY recommend using him for your next event- big or small, fancy or casual...he is the best decision we made for our wedding!

Amazing experience with Laura and her catering staff at Sunflowers Catering at our wedding, and the year leading up to the big day. They are not only professional but they also appear to genuinely love what they do. Super helpful and respectful, they took great care of us. The food was delicious and we got a lot of great feedback from our guests. Making the choice to hire Sunflowers made everything about our wedding go so smoothly. We highly recommend Laura and her staff.

f despite that it was thanksiving day, and she had her own family, Chef Aless catered my family's special day with superb attention to both the food, which was beyond delicious and plentiful, and presentation. She arrived early with a trolley full of delectable hors d'oeuvres, the best turkey ever baked, and containers full of great accompanying veggies. This was the first time I have ever needed outside catering, but the experience of having Chef Aless was so seamless, and the food was so perfect, that even if I have to invent an occasion, which I will, I know she could handle it with a touch of that marvelous French charm and expertise, and very little interference from me! I'm a cook, specifically a baker. but Chef Aless is a master, and everything was delivered expeditiously and promptly. And with heart... A truly wonderful experience. Thank you so much Alessandra. Chef catered a large family gathering (24 people with 6 kids) in a home we rented in the hamptons. He and his staff were amazing. They were professional, fun to work with, and easy to work with as well! The food was delicious. He even created a cocktail of "the day" that was a smashing success! (+ he brought a bartender to help) I originally went with Chef Plum because when I put the bid out for the event Chef had the most creative ideas for menu, drinks and was great to talk to on the phone. I knew from the start that he'd be easy to work with. From day 1 to the day of the event, he was amazing. Always responsive, helpful and took a ton off our "plate" as he helped organize rentals, glassware, and a lot of other details. This was an amazing event thanks to chef and his team. I highly recommend him!!

I hardly ever provide reviews but after our experience on Sunday, I felt compelled to provide feedback for the 'White Wolf' and his catering services. We contracted Gordon for a 4th of July weekend clam bake in our private home for 15 guests and it quickly became the centerpiece of the weekend. With regard to preparation and professionalism, Gordon scouted the location on the previous day, arrived early, and even used local seawater and kelp from the backyard to cook the lobsters! Their friendly and attentive service continued through the day. Although we were contracted from noon to 4p, the entire day went from 11a to 7:30p. We never felt rushed and his warm attitude and informative presentation allowed us to enjoy the day and feel tucked in. The very best part, aside from feeling as though we made friends during the day, was the food!! Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. Local produce and lobsters from main may have been the highlight, but they certainly weren't everything! Gordon cooked the best meal many of us have had in a while - and this is from a tough to impressive group of New Yorkers! While he took off, everyone raved about the day and our experience. Our guests requested his business card and hope he's not booked for our nex celebration. Never hesitate to use Gordon for any meal or to celebrate a special occasion - they exceeded expectations and provided a day we'll remember for a long time!

Oh my where do I start. I hired 3R's Catering & Eventd for a family meet & greet, for my wedding head table and chapel decor. The family dinner was a beautiful start to a memorable weekend. The food was delicious the Mac and cheese was scrumptious. The candy table was breathtaking it was all I could ask for and more. My family was speechless. Next day the wedding chapel was pretty and simple but all we needed because my wife and I were the focal points. The head table was the prettiest setup I've ever seen. It made us feel like we were the Queens of the Night. Simply Beautiful. Regina you have a talent that will take you sooo many places. I appreciate all the hard work and thought you put into making my weekend extra special.

Claude and Craig were fantastic, catering events on 3 consecutive days for me a week ago, with less than 2 weeks to do it. They were very kind, and are talented, producing a spread each day that everyone enjoyed a lot, and were punctual, swift in setting up and breaking down, which they did discretely as the party continued on around them. The well-abled duo was able to handle a somewhat complex arrangement in a short window (and popular time) with excellent communication, and offered competitive rates, especially for the use of better ingredients (organic & non-GMO). I would and have already recommended them to friends. Unique dishes, down-home style cooking, with flairs of other cultures mixed in - thoroughly enjoyable. The veggie eggplant lasagna was a big hit, among others.

I am truly grateful we came across Fitzgerald's and decided on their catering for our wedding reception! We are still receiving so many compliments from our guests on how delicious the food was. Nick was very easy to communicate with throughout the entire process and always brought optimism and professionalism to our conversations. The whole staff was incredibly professional on the night of the event as well. They really seemed to make every correct decision at every step of the way to provide such phenomenal food to our guests without any snags. I really can't recommend them enough.

It was an amazing experience having Milt, Janet and their crew as our caterers. They arrived early to set up and be prepared for our guest. The food was AMAZING!!!! I cannot get over their stuffed mushrooms, those delicious little chicken quesadilla, OMG the shrimp cocktail...I can sit here and name every single dish we ordered and tell the world what an amazing experience it was for my taste buds and my guest will say the same. I will continue to work with Studio Event Staffing for all my future events. Not only were they professional, they were very friendly and warm--they have an awesome team put together!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
