I contracted Rod Guy Roofing to repair a roof leak into a second story bedroom ceiling from my Spanish tile roof. At the same time I needed repair of a small roof "doghouse" over a patio door entryway, repair of a another small decorative roof over a front window, repair of a sagging fascia in a roof corner, repair of additional fascia boards. All repairs required removal of tile, rotted plywood, and installation of new roof in all areas including new Spanish tiles. This was a very difficult job because of time, material acquisition, roof slopes and confined spaces, and multiple roof locations. The Rod Guy roofing crew did a great job overall. The owner called and stopped by the job to make sure I was satisfied with the work. The job site was picked up every night and at the end of the job.

Pernell and his crew were very responsive, punctual, and fast in repairing our roof leak. During initial inspection, they noticed some loose and broken roof tiles, which were repaired as well. Already had some heavy thunder storms after the repair and not one drop has entered our home.

Thank you Leo for being honest by telling me and my husband that we only have one layer of shingles on our roof and we could apply a second layer of shingles which you and your team saved us a whole lot of money and you met our spending budget when other contractors told us we had to remove the complete shingles and start by scratch. Leo and he's team was very honest clean and on time. I highly recommend Leo and will use him again.

Absolutely exceptional service! I hired Golden Hammer Designers to re-do a portion of my roof. David gave me an estimate within an hour of requesting a roofer on thumbtack. He then passed by and took a look at my roof and gave me an exact price which was lower than the original estimate. On the day of the job, the team was punctual and respectful. They worked quickly and finished the job in one day. I would recommend David's team to everyone. The professionalism of this company really stood out.

It's nice to see there are still professional, honest companies still out there. The roof was done on time as promised. Tearing down the old roof was extremely messy, but when they finished, there was nothing out of place, and it looked like they'd never been there. I definitely recommend them for any roofing job. Thanks John

We were contacted by their salesman Frank who had had been recommend by our neighbors who had their roofs replaced and were happy with the entire experience. They were initially turned down by their insurance adjuster but Bad convinced the insurance company the roof needed to be replaced. In our case Wes oversaw the entire project to our satisfaction. A great team.

My insurance company cancelled my insurance because the roof was too old. So I shopped around and landed on these guys on Thumbtack . They did very good work and kept in contact with me throughout the roof replacement. They removed the old 1950’s vintage tile roof that had horrible leaky sealant painted over it and installed new shingle roofing. Everything passed city code inspection when they were done. They also installed a nice pipe to allow me to route FPL A/C power correctly through the roof pipe instead of hanging off the eave from a hook. I took a few days off work and monitored the install progress just to make sure no misunderstandings on what I needed done (you can’t undo a roof) and everything was done exactly as I requested. The roof looks modern now. I would recommend these guys for any roofing job from my good experience.

My parents hired this company to replace their exiting roof at their home. Once the project started I was the one dealing with them with every step of the project. All I can say is that the process was smoothly and on point. I will personally hire them for any future roof project that I will need. Thanks Michael for being so helpful.

I represent a condominium association and interviewed four contractors for major repairs to our roof. We went with Spartan Roofing and Construction and received a first class job and excellent value for money spent. The lead contractor on this job was Ignacio Escardon and he could not have been more professional, helpful, or conscientious. He was on site managing and working with trained workers during the entire job. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for quality roofing, or any construction project. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
