Johnny’s team did a great job overall with the floors. There is room for improvement, however. The team had to break up some tile in my condo and a lot of dust was generated during this process. His guys did not cover anything in the home and everything was covered in dust. Prior to this work I asked if I needed to do anything and was told no; they would take care of it all. I was left cleaning up a lot of dust throughout the house, which could have avoided if things were simply covered. His communication also needs to improve. I had to keep checking on updates. The project also took a little longer than expected, which I was not happy about. Despite the issues experienced, the workers were very friendly. Ben did most of the work and he was very professional.

Marcos did an excellent job removing old kitchen back splash tiles and tiling new one. He also traded out dated pot lights & installed new LED pots in the kitchen & added dimmer switches. Looks great! He came at the scheduled time & finished within his estimated time line. He charged what he estimated; no additional fees after the fact. The workmanship was great! And they actually cleaned up after themselves as if they had not even been there - bonus! For what it is worth, in the last 5 years, we have renovated & sold our residential home back north 3 times & so have had quite a bit of experience working with sub contractors; some times, you just want to pull your hair out!!!! Working with Macros was a welcomed experienced. Thanks again, Marcos!

I called Mr. Johnson after receiving a quote for work I needed at our home. We had problems with 4 doors and needed weather stripping on three of them and repair on one. Mr. Johnson provided a quote via thumbtack and I spoke to him the next day (a Sunday). I made an appointment for 10:30 the next day and Ray showed up on time and we discussed the work I needed done. Ray not only did the repairs quickly and to my satisfaction, but took the time to explain exactly what he did and ensure that I was happy with the results. Ray also went above and beyond the requested work by taking extra steps to make sure our doors were "draft free." Ray provided an itemized bill that was exactly the amount expected. I would definitely hire Ray again and highly recommend him to anybody who asks. Michael F.

We were preparing a rental property for sale and Jim was hired to do some general repairs to the walls and doors as well as paint both the interior and exterior of the house. We hired Jim because when he prepared the estimate, he was very detailed in reviewing what needed to be done to complete the job. He looked at all of the doors, ceilings, walls and exterior. He assessed what needed to be done and provided a detail estimate and resulting contract that itemized all aspects of the work to be completed. Though he was detailed in the contract to the level of number of doors to be painted and/or hung, he was flexible when we changed some things on him and didn’t’ charge us extra. At first glance it appeared that his estimate was higher than others we received, but because it was so clear what would or would not be completed for that amount of money, we decided to go with Jim. Other estimates left too much room for interpretation and price creep. In addition to our satisfaction with Jim’s quality of work, we were impressed that when he committed to something, he stuck to it. We knew when he would be on the job, when he needed to be somewhere else, when he would return, how long something would take, etc. The job was completed in the time he estimated and even a little early. In addition, as we were doing other things around the house ourselves, Jim often provided advice, based on his experience, on different ways of doing things, which was very helpful and appreciated. We trusted Jim and his work ethic/quality so much that we decided we could leave our house in his hands and return to our home 11 hours away, and, pay him in advance for his services. Jim put the finishing touches on the house by installing new baseboard, door trim and quarter round. He sent us not one, but over a dozen pictures of the completed work. It was a great job! Jim was a pleasure to work with. And if we need any other work done to the house while in the process of selling it, we would certainly call on Jim to get the job done. We know we can rely on him.

I selected Steve Germann from an applicant pool of 4. I read many positive customer reviews & looked @ photographs of finished projects similar to mine. His price quote was about in the middle & after he came by to view my kitchen & explained in detail what he would be doing, I felt he was the right choice. He worked very efficiently, hardly taking a lunch break, & kept to his timeframe. He is a true professional as well as an honest one. I am very pleased with my refinished cabinets & look forward to working with him on future home improvement projects. I am happy to recommend him and his company.

Nice guy-knowledgeable, skilled, punctual, highest rated but lowest bid. Very pleased with the work! Tyler ripped out and removed ALL 30 year old ugly outdated original 2 inch baseboard, replaced throughout home with new Tampa Bay Millworks 5 1/4 which he painted pre-installation with CR Best Buy Behr Premium semi-gloss enamel. He recommended TBM because they sell 16 foot lengths (less seams, many design choices, low prices, great salesperson, ask for "Fitz"). Will be my first choice for future projects.

I originally contacted Nelson for a bathroom remodel. It turned out so beautiful and was such a great experience, that Nelson remodeled my laundry room and built a living room built-in. He is very friendly, skilled punctual, honest, hard-working and a true pleasure to work with. I have received so many compliments from family and friends from the work Nelson did in my home. I will be referring anyone I know who is in need of home renovations or handyman services.

Monthly mowing service is done well, professional crew, accepting credit cards is also a plus. Points of improvement- day of the week consistency would be a plus, but not a big deal.

Bruce took care of several different projects in our home and we could not be happier with the work he completed. From resetting a kitchen sink, to repairing bathroom shower tile, and a few other random items he did a great job at a very fair price. Next time anything happens to our home he will be my first call before I even think of calling anyone else.

I was concerned because it seemed as though an excessive amount of water was coming into my sump pump well. There was also a low spot in the yard where water pooled. Dennis and his crew found a major leak in the pipe that collects water from the gutters and sump pump. They repaired the leak and installed a French drain to further drain water away from the house. They also placed a drain in the low area. Huge improvement! Dennis really knows what he's doing and everything was done professionally, courteously, and ahead of schedule. If in the future I have landscaping needs or drainage issues, I will call Allscape Patio and Landscape.

After interviewing nearly a dozen deck companies and builders, I felt most comfortable with Quality Custom Decks. Not only did the owner Richard offer the best quote in terms of price, but he was attentive to my concerns every step of the way. From start to finish, Richard answered my questions and ensured my satisfaction. He also provided my wife and I opinions on minor changes that turned out to be major improvements such as lighting and suggestions that differed from my own vision. Now that our deck is complete, literally neighbors and strangers have stopped their cars to look and comment how beautiful the work is. I am thankful to Richard and his entire team, so much that we have requested he build more decking in the back of our home. Thank you for the incredible craftsmanship.

Jerry met me at the local Lowes and transported all the materials I needed for my project. He unloaded all the product and installed it all in my home without needing any help from ME. He stuck by his quoted price, even though it took longer then he thought. He cleaned up when he was done. He was also friendly and dressed well for the project. Thanks Jerry

I wrote a review for this site twice and it disappeared into a black hole. (HORRIBLE WEB SITE!) I am not going to retype the lengthy explanation of what Bryan did for me. I will just summarize: He did a full remodel of my master bath. He did a quality job at a reasonable cost. Bryan is free to give my name and number to anyone who wants further details. I definitely recommend Bryan for your remodeling needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
