Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Everyone I interacted with at Vanderheyden were top notch professionals! The quality of work, both painting and roofing, is excellent. I liked that the contractor, Paul sat down with me and explained everything with photos and then gave me several options for addressing our roof issues. I would highly recommend Vanderheyden, Inc to others and in fact already have.

Very quick to respond to any questions or concerns. Kept in contact throughout project. The crew was also very professional and courteous and cleaned up after. They were all very hard workers that even in the summer heat worked from sunup to sundown. Roof was completed within the timeframe given and price estimate that was worked up was spot on. I would recommend to anyone looking to put on a new roof. Very pleased with company and work done.

Our leaking roof was repaired to satisfaction and an old patio skylight was rebuilt for much better performance. There were a couple of schedule hiccups but the finished job looks great and no more leaking!

The owner was very professional and prompt. His company was able to give me an estimate the next morning, and it was a Sunday. Not many companies would do that. I was able to communicate with the owner, and his crew if I had any questions. His crew started on the project immediately because I had a deadline to make, and they completed both roofing projects within two days. I highly recommend this company for any roofing or general contractor job. I would definitely use them again!

Justice Lovell at Southern Superior broke our contract for a roofing job after his inadequate preparation for re-roofing resulted in water pouring into my house. The ceiling collapsed and the floor buckled. After promising to fix the damage, I haven't seen or hear from Mr. Lovell again. He does not return our calls. He also left behind over a half a ton of construction waste. Our house still doesn't have a roof. Currently the Code Enforcement Officer is seeking the suspension of his contractor's license. Beyond what we paid him, we have over $20,000 in costs associated with this botched job by an inept and dishonest contractor . We are in the process of suing Mr Lovell for the damage he has done to our house. The first sign of trouble was that Mr. Lovell was too incompetent to fill out a work permit. His lack of skills on paper are only matched by his sloth, incompetence, and dishonesty as a builder. He showed up to the job at 10am and was gone by 2pm--and, of course, he doesn't work on Fridays. If you'd like incompetent work and someone to lie to you face, give Southern Superior a call. Justice took my money and ruined my house, I bet he'll do the same for you.

True professional. Came in and performed a detailed inspection and identified the source of the leaks in my roof. Was prompt and courteous, a true professional. Mike even identified a problem while in my attic involving my HVAC ducting, and performed the repair that needed to be done at no additional charge, and without have been asked. Can't thank him enough and will use him again for all future projects.

I ended up with two (2) roof problems, one over our Bonus Room and a second over the Laundry Room. Mike and his son, Michael, came to my house on a Saturday for the estimate. They started on the following Monday, completed that, and then came back on Wednesday to do the second repair. They were extremely professional and very knowledgeable. They stayed, into the night on the second project, to complete the job. The price was Fair and Reasonable. I would hire them again. I don't think there is a job too small or too big for them. Excellent work and outstanding response time.

My wife and I going thru insurance claim on new roof and interior repair. I spoke to several contractors which could handle both, but after speaking to Ryan at Gator- I was extremely impressed with his knowledge, how he treated myself, and speaking directly to my wife. Work was orchestrated exactly how he had laid out and in the time frame which was established. Now, with other items in our home for which my wife is desiring; I will not hesitate to contact Ryan for this work. He said to me from the beginning....he does not contract single jobs, but creates relationships! I now see this is not merely a sales pitch!!!
