Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

We used Graham Plumbing last July to fix a grinder issue related to a toilet that was gurgling. Less than a year later and some yard work caused issues as the pump was not buried down enough. Regardless we needed it to work and had already spent $800 with this company so i called to have them come repair whatever was causing the pump not to work. It’s important to note that Mr. Graham is who you will work with for pricing but not necessarily who comes to complete the job and you will not be making a check payable to “Graham Plumbing”. On our first encounter with this company the plumber sent to do the job literally threw an adult temper tantrum when “Graham Plumbing” and I had agreed on a price $100 less than the $800 the plumber on the job was requesting. After he began yelling expletives and throwing his shovel around my yard I wrote a second check for $100 difference and kindly asked him to take the additional money and go as I was worried what else he may do based on his behavior. When I called Graham Plumbing to explain the same gurgling symptoms had returned he helped me identify on the phone that something was wrong with the float switch and explained they could be out a day or so later to see what was going on. I was at work when the same plumber who had the tantrum showed up to fix his work. Four hours later I had returned home and asked the plumber and his female counterpart for the amount owed for fixing (a few PVC pipes and some foaming insulation type glue) and was told, “We don’t set the price, your husband spoke to Bryan (who I thought was James) about the price”. My husband came out and said the representative (Bryan/James) from Graham Plumbing said it would be $525. They were at my house for 4 hours, during that time the plumber Mark took an extended phone call while his lady partner went to Ace Hardware for the items mentioned earlier. I could not wrap my head around how the cost had amounted to $525. Based on the first tantrum I wrote the check and decided to reach out to Bryan/James about the justification later as I was afraid of how Mark would behave if I disputed the $525. I texted and called Graham Plumbing to give them a chance to explain the price and rectify and have not gotten so much as a text back. I would never recommend them and I believe their business practices are shady. The cost of the grinder they originally installed was $189 (it was replacing the old unit). I’ve paid them to date $1325. Don’t make the same mistake I did in trusting them to do an honest job, that’s not what you’ll get.
