We couldn't have asked for a better catering team in 90 degree weather! They were amazing from the first initial call, working with owner Allen. He made sure everything went smoothly and the staff was super helpful and we were delighted to have them cater our wedding and we highly recommend you to try the chicken vesuvio. It was more than we could have hoped for.

Chic Chef Catering is the best! I hired Ravi and his team to cater a fundraiser we were hosting for 100 people. They supplied an assortment of appetizers that were all fantastic and helped us throughout the night bartending. The staff was efficient and courteous. Ravi was willing to help us out with whatever we needed to make our event the best it could be! I would definitely recommend them for any event!

I happened to find Inglenook Catering and Joe on a quick search for local caterers. I wanted to try a different caterer with a different menu. My daughter picked the menu, and it was pretty traditional....Italian beef, Italian sausage, fried chicken, mostacolli, green beans almandine, and scalloped potatoes. Truly, I wanted to explore other items on the menu, but since I offered and it was her choice, that's what I went with. The Italian beef and sausage were homemade and definitely amazing! Great flavor and seasonings! The fried chicken was delicious as well! Everything was warmed and ready to serve. Would definitely order from Joe again! Thank you so very much for the prompt communication and coming to assist with the drop off. My guests throughly enjoyed your catering Joe, and I will definitely recommend you to my friends! Would love to try other entrees next time!!

My experience with Cater-2-U catering was great. Mike was easy to work with and allowed me to enjoy my party and not worry about a thing when it came to all the delicious food he provided. My party of 25 people all had positive things to say, and all left full and happy. I plan to work with Mike and his team in the future. My menu was a good variety of proteins and flavors (Mike came up with all of it) making my job very easy... to eat. Veggie enchilada egg rolls Chicken and waffles Ceviche Cups Chili Pepper Lime Shrimp Salad Braised Beef, Mushroom, and Spinach Crostini

The catering service Just a Bite is owned & operated by a family who has decades of experience in the Chicagoland food industry and top restaurants. They know every recipe from any restaurant and probably make it better! They've catered small birthday parties and larger surprise events for us during the last 10 years. Everything is always delicious, affordable and easy to eat while guests are milling around. They bring everything and are dressed appropriately for an event even during set up. Super friendly owner who is easy to deal with if you have guests with finicky dietary requirements or substitutions. My advice is to get a price. Just a Bite has the price we need while still wowing our guests who always ask for the name of the caterer.

I requested a drop off catering job for a small gathering I was holding in my home for friends. Chef David and I conversed on the menu options. Chef was very flexible and accommodating with a suggested menu change. He arrived on time, prepared the items as agreed in my kitchen and assisted with the layout of the serving area. He was fast and efficient. Many of the items were pre-prepared to expedite the drop off. The charcuterie and crudite were lovely, and the dips were well received by my guests. My only suggestion would be perhaps that Chef would consider purchasing a few disposable trays for the job and add it to the price of the assignment. I had to run to Party City on my own and try to guesstimate what he was going to need. It all worked out, but it would be easier if had just charged me for the platters and brought them himself.

We live near Frato's and when our son was graduating, he wanted Frato's to cater it. We knew they have great pizza, but we never knew they have an even better catering team. I have a million questions and Michael answered every single one of them promptly and with detail! He helped me decide on a deluxe pita package, delicious Mac n Cheese and out of this world brownies when I was going to go the boring route of more traditional mostaccioli and beef. I'm glad he encouraged me to try something different. That wasn't the best part though. We learned that Frato's teaches culinary students how to run a restaurant (I'm not on facebook but I guess everyone knew about this but me). All the delivery drivers are actually culinary students. So they came in their professional chef coat and set everything up for us. I'm not used to such pleasant and professional delivery drivers. Amazing work and I wish every business was as detailed as Michael/Frato's. He told me he'd make it stress free and I'm a worrier, but it was as stress free as possible for me!

Urbano, Danny & his mom were great to work with. The food was amazing! My only suggestion would be to add credit/debit card payment as an option, whether it be setting up a PayPal account or buying the credit card attachment that you can plug into your cellphone. Thanks so much for the great service & pleasant attitudes! Very much appreciated! :-)

I placed a catering order for a brunch and not only was I, but my guests were beyond happy about the food. Everything was full of flavor, great presentation, we definitely went back for seconds and thirds. Chef Allen was very responsive, professional, and went above and beyond to make sure my order was absolutely perfect. He even assisted with helping me set a few non-food related things up. I am definitely looking forward to working with him again on future events.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
