Chef Serge prepared dinner for 10 people for my wife's birthday. Chef was a pleasure to work with, fun and engaging with me and the guests, and the food was fantastic. He and his assistant, Jose, took excellent care of everyone, making sure glasses were filled, dishes were cleared, and every need was addressed. Chef made sure that both the vegetarians and carnivores had equally delicious choices. At the end of the night everything was cleaned and put away. The night was a fantastic success. I'm looking forward to our next Chef Serge event!

Chef Kevin is a miracle worker. He stayed within our budget and produced healthy, delicious food for our high school music department banquet. One of the most accommodating and flexible caterers I've worked with in my 30 years of doing events. Five stars!

I used Healthy Catering Co. to host a dinner party for 8 guests after a recommendation from my coworker. I loved loved loved the variety as far as vegetarian dishes. It was a breeze to call in advance and schedule my dinner party. Nasrin was very attentive and helpful about explaining the various foods. My only wish is that I had a big enough stomach to enjoy all the delicious dishes.

Everything about our experience with Sandra and her staff was superb. We had a 50th wedding anniversary buffet dinner with a Hawaiian theme for 26 family and friends. Her creativity, responsiveness and attention to detail was evident in all phases of the day and evening. Our guests raved about the menu and the ladies who prepared and served the meal. When they left everything was cleaned up superbly. We highly recommend Creative Visions !

Not enough good things to say about Iyea! We hired her for our cooking needs over a period of 5 days. Eight of us flew into Baltimore for a convention and rented a house. She was very flexible and responsive throughout the process. She came early in the morning to prepare breakfast. While we ate breakfast she prepared our lunches to-go, then returned again to prepare dinner. One of the nights we had a spontaneous party of 40, and she went to Costco and handled it like a champ! She did all our shopping and majority of the clean-up as well. Her prices are incredible reasonable and her food was delicious, she has the home cooked family feel in her cooking. Thank you Iyea for feeding our souls :)

PHG personnel where very professional and helpful from the get go. Candi, who set up the reservation for us, was understanding and very helpful to meeting our needs. The delivery was punctual. The food was great and everyone at the office party enjoyed the meal with complements that a great caterer was selected and a job well done. I wasn't to thank the PHG team for their service to DC Water and look forward to more opportunities with PHG. God bless PHG and may He grow their company beyond borders in Jesus name, amen.

I enjoyed working with Dianna Gilbert of Catering Reserved because on my initial inquiry for caterers on thumbtack, she responded immediately. She listened to my requests and provided the menu I wanted. Ms Gilbert responded right away to any questions or concerns I had because this was all being planned from out of state. On the night of the dinner, the food arrived on time and was set up as she promised and I received many many compliments on the menu from my guests.

I had the pleasure of attending a baby shower where this company catered the event, and from start to finish everything was so delicious. I have personally never had vegan food, and didn't know that there was so many options to choose from. I enjoyed the professionalism and the fact that the owner was present to answer any questions, and to explain what went into all the dishes on display. I just had to get her information so that she could come to one of my event and bless my company with some delicious healthy options.

Six Street Eats catered my baby shower for about 65 people. It was absolutely amazing. They arrived promptly in order to setup the dishes and stayed throughout the event to ensure the food was warm and refilled. The items I ordered were presented beautifully including crab cake bites, yogurt parfaits, mac and cheese balls, caprese skewers, 7 layer dips, and more! Everything was customized to what I requested and tasted delicious. All of our guests were beyond impressed with the display. The pricing was affordable and well worth every penny. Would definitely recommend to family and friends. Thanks Daoud and the entire Six Street Eats team!

The overall experience was good with Extravagant Affairs Catering Event Rentals and Decor. The Staff was very professional and punctual and the service and decor and set up was excellent. I wish I could give this vendor an Excellent review, but we were asked to pay for a hot box for the food and our food was cold. All of our guest complained about their food being cold. The beef was tough, the chicken was dry and most of the guest didn't even eat their food. The food was very disappointing and it took away from the excellent job that Shovanna and the rest of her team did with pulling together a really beautiful ceremony and reception.

Hire them now!! I can not even describe how perfect our experience with Maribel and her team! First off, Maribel and Noel were perfect right from the beginning. When I was planning I was having a hard time hearing back from vendors, but Maribel emailed at a quick pace and even gave me a personalized quote right from the beginning! At the tasting they not only provided an amazing experience with PERFECT food, they also wanted to get to know us better and told us about them. It was like having an amazing lunch with friends. They provided a TON of stuff for free or at the best cost around. We told them our colors and they ran with it. Communication with them was always quick and easy which is a blessing to a bride! Now at the wedding they made the space absolutely beautiful. I didn't tell them anything but colors and they brought so many decorations and made the space better than what I would have imagined and I didn't have to think twice about it! Since getting back we have been talking about our wedding with people and the first thing people talk about was the food. It was INCREDIBLE! Every person I've talked to actually got seconds at our wedding and the kids had a personalized kids meal! They also made sure we were served first and we had the food from the cocktail hour they saved from us, a beautiful salad, and our dinner! They made sure that we got to eat the food we paid for! We ate the left overs the next day and it was just s amazing! The team of server that they had with them were so professional and amazing. We are friends with people in the hotel banquet business, even my husband is a server, and we were all blown away by the staff. We also had a different business do our dessert and was going to charge us a cutting fee, but Maribel and her team cut our pies for free and even served them to our guest without anyone asking! Maribel and Noel are extremely kind people who are professional, excellent, and amazing people. Their team is quick and professional. We even got an email from our venue about how incredible they are! DO yourself a favor and contact them now, and you are ensured a delicious meal from incredible, professional people! Thank you Top of the City!!

Our catering experience was outstanding with The Wandering Chef. They catered our girls' birthday party. The flavors are what you would expect from a fine restaurant, and the service was even better. Gorgeous and delicious cakes, even a gluten free one. And they use real ingredients! Their to-go meals are excellent as well. It's fine dining in your own home without the clean up of cooking a meal. Everything we have tried tastes so good. It's so easy to heat up. You need The Wandering Chef in your life!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
