Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

I contacted Ben after I dropped my computer. He took my computer, listened to my explanation of what was going on and within a hour he callled and told me what the actual problem was. He said he had to order a part and passed that price on to me and as soon as the part came in he fixed my computer. I had a really good experience with Ben and I didn't feel like I was being taken advantage of. If I ever need a computer repair again I would call him again.

Ben worked on my Lenovo lap top and fixed my wifi connection problem, loaded Windows 10 and cleaned my computer, all for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend Flat Rate Computer Guy and Ben for any computer problems and issues. As a side note, I was sitting in Best Buy with my lap top. It was going to be at least another hour before I got to the service counter. So I used my iPhone to do a quick search for nearby computer repair. I used Thumbtack and received an immediate reply from Ben, took my computer direct to him and got it back within 4 hours. Great Service!!

Ben was the first to respond ro my repair request. His call didn't even take a full minute from the time I hit the send button. His rate is super reasonable and he gave me an idea upfront what the part + shipping cost would be. I delivered my laptop to him on Sunday afternoon and he called on Tuesday afternoon to say it was ready....and that timeframe included the shipment of a part! Total cost was under $100! I am very pleased with Ben's service, computer knowledge, and fair pricing ethic! He has won my business life! I highly recommend using him for your next computer repair!

A+ service and support. I would recommend Benjamin to anyone seeking a thorough and effective professional to deal with their computer issues. I needed a repair, which he diagnosed and repaired, but I was also interested in an upgrade to my system. He described multiple options, the benefits of one versus another for my purposes, and then procured and installed the hardware when I made my choice. Total satisfaction every step of the way. Plus, he's a vet.

I was unable to boot my computer and suspected it was my power supply. I checked Google to locate repair shops and happened on Thumbtack. What a stroke of luck. I received a quote from Ben within a couple of minutes for a flat rate of $75. What a deal! I dropped my computer off at his house, and within an hour he called with the problem. It was that my liquid cooling system had died. At my requiest, he overnighted an upgraded cooling system. I also decided to change my mail hard drive to an SSD. The next day the parts arrived and were installed, and he cloned my hard drive, all for $75. He also did not tack on any additional on the cost of the parts. I will always contact Ben on any future computer problems I might have. I could not recommend Ben more highly!

My Laptop could not find its operating system! I chose Ben to check it out. Inform me that my Hard Drive failed, plus my Laptop should be replaced, since it was many years old. Ben did not charge me for his time, to inspect it. If you need a computer or laptop repaired, maybe like myself having one built, Ben is your choice too! AJ GONZO GONZALES
