My husband and I were looking to get our kitchen remodeled with Ikea's new kitchen cabinets. We got several quotes and Bruce's was what worked the best for us. The price was right for the scope of our remodel. Plus, he was so great to work with, from the project's start to finish. Bruce and his team are obviously skilled craftsmen. They put together our Ikea kitchen within our time frame and everything looks fabulous - even better than we could have imagined. It was also really easy to communicate with Bruce. He really listens and accommodated all of our requests (like that one time we didn't like the flooring we initially picked out - Bruce tore it apart and installed new floors we loved). We're so happy to have worked with Bruce. Don't hesitate to hire him!

If you are looking for help decorating your house look no further. Stacy is your gal. I refer to her to my friends as the Joanna Gains of MSP for rustic chic (although she can do any aesthetic you are dreaming of)! I hired her to help me furnish and decorate my new construction home. She was always very attentive and had a wonderful game plan to help me tackle such a huge task. She came over and measured my home and took pictures. She then gave me a 3D rendering of my home decorated! It was STUNNING. We then went on several shopping trips to buy the large pieces together. Later on we went on trips to find the perfect accessories at places an interior designer would only know about! Stacy was a great listener and was flexible if any pieces didnt speak to me. She was happy to point out other options that would look just as nice. Finally, Stacy got some amazing designer discounts at the large box stores. On the shopping front Stacy is happy to do as little or as much as you need! She can go with you or tell you what to find, whatever your preference. She is also a master stager and thriftstore expert too! Stacy not only does typical furniture placement, shopping, and decorating...she is also an architect who can make a ton of the creative projects she proposes in your home for you. You don't have to hire yet another person. Wonder woman I tell you!!! Stacy made us a custom mud room bench built in HERSELF. She used reclaimed wood from all over the state and from barns! She also made us a custom chalkboard wall. Stacy's daughter took the pictures for our collage wall that will line our steps, they are the things of dreams! Stacy also picked out a wonderful reclaimed wood wall paper for above the fireplace that is unlike anything I have ever seen. To sum up it Stacy is a joy to work with, she is a friend at this point. She can literally do it all. She is flexible on all counts and can help you as little or as much as you like at a very fair price point. If you haven't already, just hire stay. You won't regret it. -Tory

Deb is so wonderful to work with. She helped us with our drab living room and turned it into a beautiful and classy room that we just love. She has wonderful ideas and worked with our own specific taste. She helped guide us to make the best decision for the room and for our needs. We are so happy to have worked with Deb! Now we have a living room that has become our favorite part of our home. We will be asking for more of her services and input as we continue to decorate/renovate our home in the future and recommend her to everyone who is looking for an interior decorator.

We hired Angie and Adam (Orchestrated Living Design) to stage our rental house when we decided to sell last Spring. Since it was a rental, the house was entirely empty. At first my husband was hesitant to spend the extra money to have the house staged, but after meeting with them, we decided to go ahead and do it. Angie and Adam worked their magic, making a dull, empty, cold looking house with nothing in it, into a warm, welcoming home. We had four offers within the next three days. SOLD on the fourth! We never expected a bidding war, but to our delight, that is what happened. Did it help to have the house staged? Absolutely! Even my Doubting Thomas husband would whole-heartedly agree. Selling a house can be a stressful time, but Angie and Adam made this whole process a lot easier. They were very professional and careful when moving furniture, treating our house like their own, making sure to take care of every last detail. Angie’s design and the way she put the rooms together made us almost want to move in ourselves! I would HIGHLY recommend Orchestrated Living to help you sell your home. Thanks Angie and Adam! After pulling the carpet to expose hardwood floors, we wanted a fresh look in our living room. We asked Jenna for some suggestions on wall color and general decor. We planned on keeping some of the wall art already decorating the room, so Jenna pulled a color from the artwork and presented us with some color options. We knew there would be some work involved, including stripping one wall of 20-plus-year wallpaper and covering a darker color to lighten the room. Nevertheless, the end result was/is fabulous! Jenna pointed us in the right direction and we couldn’t be happier. Jenna even suggested the brand of paint to use. It was so good I’ll use it for all future interior paint jobs (sorry, no product endorsement here; you’ll have to ask Jenna).

First, Julie at Decorating Den Interiors was the only person that Thumbtack matched me with that bothered to contact me. I even sent individual emails to a couple of the other companies with no response. Julie has been super responsive and communicative throughout the time we have been working together, and I appreciate that very much. Julie visited me in my home on a few occasions. She put together a fabulous plan for my space, starting with understanding my overall goals, drilling into my personal tastes, and then presenting me with options that would work. She worked hard to stay within my budget, at times working directly with the suppliers to negotiate adjustments when the pricing didn't make sense. Julie also recommended a local resource to help me with some of the construction details. They answered the phone when I called (bonus!) and because of an expected rain day preventing them from executing scheduled outdoor work, they were at my house the very next morning. Super nice and professional team and I couldn't be more pleased with their work. Everything is on order now, and I can't wait to see my new space come to life over the next couple of months. Thank you, Julie!!!

Working with Erin was such a pleasure. The thought of painting and decorating our home was overwhelming, but she immediately put my mind at ease and made the process something I looked forward to. Erin was very flexible with us and went above and beyond to break down every aspect of the budget. I never dreamed that my home could look like a picture in a magazine and thanks to Erin's immeasurable talent, our house feels like a home. I would highly recommend Erin for your future projects.

Erica is a very talented designer, but what sets her apart from the rest is her personality, style, flexibility, and ability to think outside the box. All of the designers we met with prior to meeting Erica made me feel intimidated to express my ideas and embarrassed about my "low" budget (which was $10,000 - to me, a lot of money; to them, not nearly enough to get anything done). Erica took the time to get to know me, my home, my goals for design, and my priorities; and she truly cared about each of them. One of our projects was far more difficult, time-consuming, and expensive than we had anticipated, and she was persistent and determined to find an affordable and aesthetic alternative solution - and she did it! Her approach to each room in our house made the entire process far less overwhelming than had we attempted it on our own. And she clearly wanted us to have fun with the process, which was always appreciated. She was never pushy with timelines or purchases, but always kept us on track for progress. Erica was willing to meet with us on weekends, evenings, and by phone an email; very accessible. My husband and I are very pleased with our results, and Erica has been a pleasure to work with! Thank you, Erica!

Melissa Halvorson with GH Specialties is a talented interior designer. She has a keen eye for color and style and can transform any room or project into something special. Melissa is a gifted seamstress and has designed and sewn several pieces for me. Her creativity is endless; she is direct, fair, honest, and is a pleasure to work with! Melissa always goes above and beyond with her projects. I highly recommend Melissa and trust she will do an excellent job for you! Melissa helped me transform my outdated and understated master bedroom into an elegant and inviting room in our executive home. She helped choose colors, worked with existing pieces, creatively designed and sewed a duvet for the bed and recovered accent pillows. She listened attentively and worked within my budget and style preferences. Melissa completed the project in a very timely manner and with superior quality. I’m always impressed with Melissa’s professionalism and her ability to make things beautiful.

Green Olive Design turned my house into a home. As a first-time homebuyer, I found myself with a full house to decorate and no desire to take the time to do it myself (I also have no sense of design/taste/aesthetic, so it wouldn't have turned out well!). I'm not sure if the owner realizes that the company's initials are "GOD", but it was a godsend to have her come to my house, take charge, and make it look like a civilized person lives here (as opposed to a 25 year old guy with no sense of taste). She provided great value and absolutely delivered. I've received plenty of comments since GOD came and decorated my home, and couldn't be happier with the level of value she provided.

Ann & Barrie were AMAZING!!!! Exactly what I was looking for! I hired them for 2 hours to got through my 3800 sq foot house and give paint ideas, decor and what to keep, what to update! We were in the midst of a remodel and needed some design help and direction. Absolutely fantastic, professional advice!! They worked within my budget and gave great inexpensive ideas!! Would use them in a heartbeat again. If you are to remodel and update things on your own, don't make a costly mistake- hire these designers! They give you great timeless, not trendy ideas- and know how to work with existing finishes and woods as well. Yes, they gave great ideas on how to work with my Golden oak in the house! I feel so much more at peace with the direction of the rest of the remodel! Very happy!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
