Darin photographed my sister's wedding, my wedding, and many of our friends. He does an amazing job. He is on time, fun, and quick. My husband hates pictures and he said after our wedding he didn't mind the pictures at all because Darin was quick and made it relaxed. He is very good about getting back to you with any questions you have. I definitely recommend Dear Hart to anyone!

We loved him! He gave us the perfect ceremony we were hoping for. He was so well prepared right from the moment we approached him for doing our wedding. He had sample vows, and they were beautiful ! He didn't mind us doing everything at last minute and was very very patient with us. And he was impeccably dressed at the wedding and also helped us rehearse. In all he did much more than he was supposed to and he did an extraordinary job at it. I would strongly recommend his services.

Lainie was great through the whole process! I had 2 separate trials to make sure everything was perfect, and of course the day of it was! I had my hair and makeup done, my mom had makeup, my maid of honor had hair and makeup, and the rest of the bridesmaids (6) had hair and we were able to get it all done in time! Everyone looked great!! Thank you so much! (Sorry the pictures aren't the professional ones--they aren't done yet!)

I needed makeup for my wedding at the last minute. I was originally going to go to a salesperson at a nearby mall, but after trying a few out I discovered the ones available were duds. I was also super concerned about the cost of a free lance professional makeup artist, which is why I avoided it at first. Jessica was not only extremely affordable, but she was professional, fast, flexible, personable, and very in tune to what I wanted. I told her I wanted dark and dramatic, she told me I shouldn't with my dress. I went home to my dress after the trial, and saw immediately she was right! Let her suggest what you need! She also takes part in face/body paint, drag makeup, celebrity magazine shoots, hair design, clothing design...she is limitless! I highly recommend her to anyone looking for event makeup.

Steve made the chaos of our wedding look downright glamorous! From the staged shots of our families and wedding party (I wish I had a pic of him standing on top of the wedding band's van outside the venue to get the whole lot of us in the shot! He even waited until I was done ugly laughing. A true gentleman.), to the ceremony, to the entertainment and dancing, Steve achieved what I thought was impossible - making us and our friends look elegant, even while covered in tattoos, chugging beer, and racing from photo location to photo location on a school bus with murals of David Bowie painted on the side. As an aside, Steve manged to get a bunch of pictures of a dear friend on what turned out to be the last time we saw him. AND, he captured him ding what he loved best: Dancing up a storm! I'll forever be grateful for his intuition to get plenty of photos of that unknown-to-him crazy mofo doing the running man! You'll have no problem Kissing Twice, by the way. He'll tell you to do it because he needs to get just the right angle on one of the most memorable parts of the day, but he'll make you feel so comfortable that you won't mind getting that second kiss in. And, don't worry, he'll get all of the memorable moments that you're sure to forget in the midst of all of your chaos, too.

We had such an amazing experience working with Jordan. We hired him to capture one of the most important days of our lives, our wedding day. He was super easy to work with and very professional. He listened to what ideas we had and turned them into a reality. Jordan was talented, personable, prompt and very knowledgeable. He made our wedding memories into a video we can share with future generations and treasure forever. I am so happy with the results and highly recommend Jordan!

I had my makeup done by Sarah for my wedding recently, and she was amazing! Sarah was professional but personable throughout the entire experience. She was comfortable to work with, which is important when someone is touching your face! I was so happy with how I looked and received a ton of compliments that evening on how beautiful I was! Especially from my husband! If I ever need these services again, I will definitely call Sarah!

Kendra really has a passion for her work as she really made us feel comfortable from the start. We hired her as our officiant, and she seemed more like family from the start. She worked with us on some of the wedding planning as well. We had no idea what we wanted, how we wanted it to go, what we wanted to say, but she walked us through several options and really helped take care of all the loose ends! When we went to look at our venue, do our cake tasting, and decide on some other things, we asked her to join us for her input and we were happy with her ideas. She truly gave us our money's worth. We will be recommending her to anyone who needs an officiant.

We had Tim come to do our After Party for our Wedding. He was fantastic and the dance floor was filled the entire time. His lighting really enhanced the experience and he was very cool and professional. He came up early to set up and was very responsible about getting contact numbers and preparing ahead for the job. We thought he was fabulous and highly recommend him for DJ jobs and will definitely use him again.

I hired Crystal to do make-up and hair for myself and a relative for my wedding. She was very accommodating with scheduling (we did book her at least 90 days ahead of the event, I believe - do it early!). Both the trial and day of make-up/hair went very smoothly and were stressfree (as much as it can be for a wedding!). Crystal really listened to our requests and made changes whenever requested. She was very professional and just jump right back in when we met for the day-of makeup and hair (she remembered my requests from the trial and had taken pics).I did airspray makeup, and it was definitely the right choice (even though I were very little makeup on a daily basis), for 90/100F heat and 50%+ humidity. I sweated through it and it didn't budge. A lot of people complemented me for my hair, and it did look truly amazing! Thanks, Crystal!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.
