I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Mr. Nelson is by far the best math teacher I have ever come across. I first met Mr. Nelson when I was 15. Math wasn't my favorite subject back then, but he made it my favourite subject very soon. I excelled in Maths and was fast-tracked to sit for my O-Level Math paper one year before the rest of my class. He is really a Math God. More than anything, he is a great person. In grade 11, I was struggling with Math, since I had selected to take the subject at Higher Level. Mr. Nelson was so busy, but he still made time for me. He used to tutor me at 5am! What a teacher! He really is such a great person - and sometimes he did not charge us since he knew my parents were trying hard to pay school fees. When I went on to university in Singapore, I started tutoring students in Math. And when I would get stuck sometimes, Mr Nelson was just a call away. He'd help me solve the sum then and there. I can write so much more about how great he is, but I don't think any of it will do justice. What I can say is, if you need the best math teacher (I hear he tutors in other subjects too now), then Mr. Nelson is your guy. He is simply the best. Oh, and I have recommended him to many others too - all who have used his services share the same sentiments. He is our Math God, and alwyas will be.

Frank has been an exceptional tutor for my daughter in 8th grade. This year has been particularly difficult for her and I've recently learned , the majority of the class due to a less than stellar teacher unfortunately and Frank is keeping her on track and ready to move to 9th grade math. For students that struggle witht he subject, he is patient and explains things in their "language" making it easier to learn. I will continue to partner with Frank for my daughter's math education into the summer and I am sure she will meet the 9th grade curriculum with the foundation and confidence required to excel. Thanks Frank!

Tia is an awesome young lady as well as a great tutor. I got Ms. Lucas to help with my daughter Miracle who is now a rising 4th grader. Miracle's weakness was math but Tia realized that she was not comprehending what she reading, and she began to work with her on reading comprehension. Once Miracle understood that, then her math skills improved. Another great thing that was recognized was that my daughter learns through colors and this is a great way that she understands her work. My daughter has been working with Tia since the beginning of her 3rd grade year and I will continue to let my daughter work with her even if she is comfortable to do it on her own. The principle behind her continuing tutoring is to keep her focused on her work and new learning skills. I would definitely recommend Dynamiklearning to anyone. I have referred to parents to her already.

I’m not even sure where to really start as this was my first experience looking for a tutor and it seems that everything fell in perfect place. Alicia was professional, responded each time I reached out to change a date or time right away. Alicia was always on time, price was in my budget and my son loved her! He was so confident after his first session with her and said she taught him something that his math teacher didn’t want to teach this year. I felt comfortable leaving him with her and he asked if she could help him again next year. I highly recommend Alicia Batista.

Primary Fundamentals has worked with my son since the end of 1st grade (2 years ago). My son reads and writes consistently and accurately on grade level (now going into 4th grade), and he did fantastically well on third grade EOG (end of grade) testing on both the English Language Arts and Math portions of that assessment. So grateful for Primary Fundamentals!

Our child has worked with Linda for approximately six months and has shown strong improvements in math. From the outset, she had our student work on organizational skills which complemented the tutoring sessions and led to greater understanding of the material being taught. She is very familiar with the Wake County Schools math curriculum. I highly recommend Linda.

My daughter has been going to Mathnasium for quite a while. She was really behind in math, she hated it, in fact. She was in 9th grade but working from a 4th grade level. Mr. King and his crew at Mathnasium of Garner were able to work with her 1 on 1 and she actually is working on grade level in grade 10 now, or Math 2 as they call it in HS. She is not afraid of math anymore, in fact she gets 100's on some of her tests and quizzes . I can't believe the difference. She goes willingly to tutoring, she likes math. I really can't say enough good things. There really is no price you can put on the changes I see in her improvement.

    About

I specialize in tutoring elementary and middle school age students in math. As a former middle school math teacher, I saw students coming to middle school with a lack of confidence in mathematics, sometimes gaps in their knowledge, and often a lot of math anxiety. I became interested the mathematical foundations that students were gaining in elementary school and wanted to support the development of that foundation. I have extensive experience as a mathematics curriculum developer, including work for Education Development Center, Jason Learning, SRA/McGraw-Hill, and Houghton Mifflin. With an bachelor's degree in mathematics, a master's in education, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, I am a skilled instructional designer, with experience and knowledge about how people learn and how content can be creatively developed and delivered to support a range of learning styles.

Emma tutored me on the math required for the GRE including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. She was very patient with me and did a great job explaining the concepts when they didn't click. I went from failing the GRE math subsection prep tests to passing in a matter of weeks and was eventually accepted into the number one grad school for my profession.

Dr. Manning was great to work with. His approach is based on working problems and going over what you do right and wrong, and it is really effective. He spends a lot of time preparing for sessions, so he always already knows the best way to solve a problem. He helped me a lot.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

        • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
        • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
