Chef Tyler catered a small dinner party I attended recently. It was an amazing mix of classy yet met the casual feel of our group. We enjoyed meeting the chefs and their professionalism was top notch! The food was to die for and I tried foods that I have never eaten in my life and tried a spin on foods that I love! I would recommend Chef Tyler for any event you are looking to cater.

My experience with Jamaica Coast catering was excellent. She catered a party of mine. The chef, Marcia, makes your experience personal, she makes sure that you get exactly what you want and caters everything to you. The food was phenomenal, and the professionalism was outstanding. Every dish she made for me had an unique taste, but was exquisite. The staff was very polite and professional as well. I would definitely be calling her for my future events!

Chef David, was great. First time using him, he was very professional, on time for set up, organized and even cleaned up . The food was so good, we had Chicken & Red Velvet Waffles, Shrimp & Grits, and mini Spinach Quiche- all of it was really flavorful. Thanks so much for making our Christmas Brunch a breeze.

Chef Devonte did a tremendous job. It was such a fun and memorable night. The food was amazing, and he was such a pleasure to be around (he gave us cooking tips, answered all of our questions -- and there plenty-- and was just a true pro). I recommend him highly ... in fact, we already hired him for another birthday dinner.

We had a phenomenal experience working with Top Hat and Liane. Liane and her staff showed up early to prepare giving us a lot of comfort. The food was phenomenal, as everyone loved the meal. We were able to customize the menu to our liking. The service with the bartender/server and chef were incredible. All in all, the event experience with Top Hat exceeded our expectations and we will most certainly use Liane and team again in the future. She took all the stress out of planning our first party.

We hired Angelica for a cooking lesson that doubled as the creation of our Christmas dinner. Our family members are vegetarian and vegan, and Angelica prepared a vegan Greek feast. I can not convey in words just how delicious it was. Angelica is a truly gifted chef. I had high expectations, and she surpassed them. She's professional, and her prices are fair. Angelica is also a delightful person. She's top-notch in every way. I recommend her highly!

Terique of Epps Bistro has done several jobs for me. He is my go to for all things food. Our first job was a small lunch with coworkers. I gave him a time to be there, a few diet restrictions and a very brief conversation about what we might enjoy. Honestly the rest was magic! He brings delicious choices sets it all up masterfully, serves with such gentle attention that he's sort of there always checking that all is well, but not intrusive. Then he cleans puts everything as it was and its as if he was never there. Well, except for the memories of great food, attentive service and the question I always have "what else can you do?" We recently hired him to cater a four day beach house event for eight of us. I wondered how it would be living with our chef. It was fantastic! We all had great food. Coffee was made when we awoke, creative breakfast options. Informal lunches and fresh delicious dinners. It was a fabulous four days and again...yummy memories. His talents are quickly recognized and appreciated as I now happily see him catering for gatherings that I had nothing to do with. I guess we all know quality when we see it. Our latest EB food obsession is his turkey and chicken meatballs. My family loves them. So I just have him on a delivery schedule, (oh and his fratatas) and our fridge is always stocked. This guy is so easy to work with. You'll love his quite humor. A+ operation.

I am SO glad I chose to hire Joya to be the private chef at my event. She cooked 5 meals for us + snacks all vegan. Not everyone at the event was vegan but everyone found ALL the meals delicious which was amazing. She was one time and on schedule for everything, so sweet, put a lot of love into her food/work and I truly hope to work with her again in the future. If you are thinking about hiring Joya definitely do it! You will not regret it.

I was very fortuate to attend an Engagement Announcement Party planned and executed by the DIN events, llc company; in Charlotte, North Carolina. The entire experience was extremely extravagant and very very professionally done. The Event Location was beautifully decorated and enviting. There was a feeling of warmth and love in the air. The Caterer selected was outstanding!!!! The desserts that were prepared by the Dessert Chef were absolutely scrumptious. Ms. Smith's entire staff were pleasant and each guest were made to feel special. I always arrive at events early and upon my arrival the staff was in place. Ms. Smith has a natural warmth and a beautiful inviting smile; as you can tell she loves the profession she's chosen.

Dianne Blancato prepares and delivers meals to us once a week. The meals are delicious and Dianne is so easy to work with. After an initial consultation, she provided an extensive list of meals to choose from. She also has no problem if we ask her to prepare a meal that is not on the list. Dianne is open to suggestions -- more spice, less citrus etc so that she gets the food exactly to our liking. Dianne definitely goes above and beyond. We look forward to her deliveries every week!

I was looking for an option for my best friend's birthday. We had some guest coming in from out of town and we knew they would be going out at least one night of the weekend so we were looking for another option! I basically went on Google and searched "Personal Chefs in Charlotte" and it lead me to Thumbtack. I was like what the hell, I'll give it a shot! So, I did and I received back several quotes almost immediately. I messaged each back and also checked out their profiles and searched them to see what I could find. I like to see pictures and I'm definitely a review reader. Another thing I'm big on is a personal connection. I can tell within a few minutes of talking with someone if I'm going to like that person or not. From the very first messages with Chris, I knew he was our guy. He was crazy quick at responding, which myself and our Type A birthday girl loved and I could tell was just a laid back guy. We are completely open to any food as long as it's good so I pretty much let him take the lead. He introduced the idea of a an Italian tasting menu to me and gave me some options and with the approval of the BG, we made our selections. He got to our party spot right on time, brought everything he needed and was very professional. He got to work right away getting everything started and we knew right off the bat he was going to work with us. He entertained all of our crazy questions while still working and just went with the flow. His food was AMAZING. Everything was so good. A few of us tried things we had never had and were pleasantly surprised. I believe in supporting small businesses and this guy was definitely worth every penny we spent. I will most definitely reach out to Chris in the future for my entertaining needs! Thank you Chef Chris for being awesome and putting up with us!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience with Chef Samuel. He created an amazing meal for a private family function and we already asked him back for my grandmother's birthday party. The Saratoga Ribeye was incredible! Wonderful experience that far exceeded our expectations.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
