John was a pleasure to work with. His master carpenter, Dave was easy to work with and helped to repair a badly rotted screen porch. I hope to hire them to repair my roof this summer.

My initial contact with Northeast Construction was great, they sent a very professional response and sent out some one (Ian?) the next day to make the repairs to walls and touch it up. Brandon also came out to check on the job and also provided a estimate on some bathroom work we would like to do. After speaking with him we could tell he has extensive experience and knows what he is talking about. We had no idea we couldn't install Sheetrock of any type in a shower behind tile, we had numerous contractors say that was perfectly fine and the norm, after researching its is not the norm. We look forward to working with them on our bathroom job and future projects.

Brent came to my house to do a small job and because we had set it up as "per hour," he was able to do some other small jobs, as well. He was professional, knew what he was talking about, and a pleasure to work with. I have a 40-year old cherry dining room set (think your grandmother's dining room) and the stain was wearing from the seat backs on all six chairs. The required staining and polyurethane, and probably a bit more work. Brent gave me a good price and that very day took the chairs to work on at his home. The turnaround and communication were excellent and I will hire him again.

We used NH Grand Roofs to install a new roof on our residential rental. The work was at 20+ % below the 3 other quotes we received and was performed on time and meticulously. The roof had 3 pipes/vents and a chimney they needed to roof around, one had been leaking. The owner even took my call off hours, which I thought was very impressive. I would highly recommend this company for any home or business. You won't be disappointed and you will probably save some $$$ too. - JAKAL Holdings

Jerry put a new roof on our addition and existing home. He was professional and timely. The roof looks great and haven't had any issues with it. We were so happy with his work that we had him build block stairs and part of a wall that we didn't have time to finish. Also called him to do some painting. He does quality work in a timely manner. Will definitely use him again in the future.

Mark and his crew of one totally kicked butt! They came the SAME DAY and cleared the roof of snow AND ice. They even cleaned up the mess made on the ground after shoveling (previous contractor only shoveled snow - didn't remove ice or clean up the ground). They worked hard for two solid hours on my split entry home. Totally recommend Mark Mahoney. Give him a call!

My overall experience with Save-On Construction was more than satisfactory from start to finish for all the above-mentioned reasons. My house is over a hundred years old with a fairly steep pitch, and it had 2 layers of asphalt shingles that needed to be stripped first. As it turned out, there was extensive damage to the rake board, rafter and roof deck that required replacement. I mas most impressed by the skill of the crew members who were able to make the necessary repairs and still finish the entire job--cleanup included--in one day. Last but not least, the price was very competitive especially considering the necessary repairs--great value.

Jane and Bruce Mike and his crew renovated our porch. Which entailed new roof, ceiling, floor, windows, insulation, gutters. He also found rotted wood around the porch and removed and replaced it. He is very reliable and willing to make any changes. We highly recommend Mike for his professionalism and craftsmanship. Thank you Mike and Danny for an excellent job in giving us a beautiful new porch!

The overall quality of the team and their work. They came when they said they would, worked with us on any questions/concerns that came up, and before leaving for the day Kevin would come and get my husband to go over the days work. The time frame they gave us for the project (roof over existing deck ) was right on the money with the only delay being one day of rain. Also our code enforcement officer, who had never worked with Kevin, was impressed with the work. The team was was courteous and polite and at the end of the project the area was so clean that if it wasn't for the new roof you couldn't tell they were there. I would highly recommend Kev and Sons Construction! !

Zach did a phenomenal job on a demo project at my home. The result is that you cannot tell there was ever a room there at all! It was a difficult project because it involved removing two roofs, (one built on top of the other if you can believe that) and he managed to keep his sense of humor throughout. Prompt, knowledgeable, polite and professional are a few of the words I would use to describe him and I would definitely hire him again and plan to in the Fall. I noticed he followed the "measure twice, cut once" rule on detail work and when he was finished, left the worksite in pristine condition.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
