I am planning a trip to Japan countryside and I thought knowing how to speak Japanese would make my trip more enjoyable. After three weeks of using Japanesepod101.com to learn the basics, I met Matsumura Sensei to practice oral conversation. Over a period of 1 week, we met intensively over 3 sessions. She fixed my pronunciation and we practiced different scenarios. We role-played different conversations from Japanesepod101: ordering food, getting train tickets, asking for directions, etc. She tried to force me to speak Japanese by minimizing the use of English, which was very helpful. After the lessons, I tried out my new language skill at my favorite lower East Side ramen place called Minca and a Japanese curry place called Mimi & Coco. I had no problem ordering food and the staff were very happy I spoke to them in Japanese. The lessons were very valuable. Of course, I had only been taking Japanese for 4 weeks and I skipped a lot of the basics to focus on the practical (e.g. I know how to order a cheeseburger with no onion, but I still don't know the word for a fireman). Nonetheless, her lessons made me feel confident that I will be able to manage in Japan countryside without using Google translate too much.

Akiha has been very supportive in her Japanese lessons. She has a very flexible schedule and is very willing to work with you and match her lessons with your personal style of learning. She is very patient and strives to meet the students' needs during each lesson. Because of her help I have been rapidly progressing towards my goal of becoming fluent. I have been learning Japanese with Hyemi for 3 years and I can only say great things. She is really receptive to the way you want to learn and will help guide you along whatever course you take. She's great at explaining things and makes sure you understand the subject completely before moving on which I really appreciate. She is always easy to talk to and really thoughtful. She's also really flexible about timing. I love drinking a cup of green tea and staring at her beautiful art that she's made while trying to remember katakana. I love her!

Look no further! I enjoy my time with my new friend & teacher...and it goes way to fast. The best discovery is just how much language depends on culture.

I spent six sessions with Ms. Kida reviewing Genki 1 and 2 in preparation for my upcoming Japan trip. She improved my conversation ability tremendously. She is very thoughtful and fun. I wish I had met her earlier when I first started my Japanese language courses a year ago. More importantly, she is a very nice person and I feel fortunate to share my Japanese journey with her. Thank you so much.

Señora Scherba is a GREAT teacher. I had her in 7th grade as a regular school teacher, and her class was THE BEST! I could never wait to come to Spanish class. And besides, I learned so much, 7th grade Spanish was amazing! In 8th grade, I got a different teacher and was devastated. But I asked Mrs. Scherba to tutor me. Now I'm in 8th grade and finishing the first year of high school level Spanish. Mrs. Scherba is the BEST!

I took a tutoring session in Japanese. Hannah gave easy, logical explanations and provided extra examples when I didn't understand some concepts. She even provided extra materials for my level of study. I will definitely be taking more lessons in the future from her!

Junichi's a great tutor! I started learning Japanese from him only 5 months ago and have pretty much mastered the basics of Japanese grammar already. He is also genuinely concerned with the progress of his student, and is interested in teaching not just the language itself, but fun things about Japanese culture as well. All in all my learning experience with him was a positive one and would definitely recommend him to anyone interested in learning Japanese.

      About

Born and raised in Naples, Italy, I finished my college education here in the US while teaching beginning Italian 101-102 to undergraduate students, mostly majoring in voice or history/archaeology.

      About

Most teachers, like me, are professional musicians who supplement their income by giving lessons. However: I genuinely love teaching and would happily do it even if I didn't need the money. My students can see the passion and excitement I have for my work, and that does wonders in their ability to learn and develop. It is one thing to play an instrument well, but it is another thing entirely to know how to teach it well.
