Perfect! I requested catering services very last minute since my previous caterer canceled and Chef chris came to my rescue! He was so helpful and accommodating and I felt relieved the second I spoke with him. The event was flawless and It was a blessing in disguise that the previous caterer canceled because I got to experience NY Catering Service. Can’t wait to do this again. Thanks!!

This is a first class professional catering service. You really do get what you pay for: not only was the food delicious, but Lauren and her team were superb: very sweet, but also very efficient, paying attention to every detail, and giving us precious advice when needed. Our bartender (whom we had hired separetly because we had a previous relationship with him) failed to show up and Lauren immediately and seamlessly fixed that glitch by re-organizing her staff and deploying 2 of them to tend bar. Every aspect of the service was very good. We cannot recommend them enough and will use them again. Thank you Lauren, Tony, John and all the others.

If you are seeking a true PROFESSIONAL for your event, do not hesitate to hire Rich! 5 stars all the way for this awesome bartender! I hired Rich Stein for my wedding at the Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Approximately 100 guests and he handled them all with ease, demonstrating the professional he truly is! Totally focused, kept on top of everything! Prior to the event, he was very helpful in assisting me with liquor decisions, among other issues specific to this venue, and answered questions promptly and completely. I had certain liquors set aside for a few certain people, and that went smoothly. I felt totally stress-free knowing he was in charge of everything at the bar. I would not hesitate to hire Rich again, next time, perhaps a catering gig because I hear he is a great chef, as well! Thanks, Rich!

We recently had a surprise birthday party for our daughter in the Armonk DeCicco’s on the mezzanine level. It was fantastic. Francesca, who organized the catering, made it very easy for us to plan the party. The staff was also very professional and took care of any of our needs. The evening was a great success due to them. They even packed up the excess food for us to take home. The food was delicious and our guests commented on how tasty it was. We are glad we chose DeCicco’s as our venue.

Adolfo helped us with an intimate anniversary party. He was incredibly helpful and supportive as we planned the gathering and I was in another state. He and his employee arrived early to set up, were courteous, friendly, and flexible and left the place cleaner than when they arrived. Our guests raved about the food and we all had a wonderful celebration.

Best experience ever. We needed a bartender for a private birthday party I was organizing for my boss and took a chance on hiring HighLife. Not only did we get a bartender but we got Tyler himself - the owner of HighLife. He was amazing. Our chef we hired from a different company was a disaster and Tyler took it upon himself to help serve the meals, set the tables with wine glasses, pour water/wine throughout dinner, not to mention making the best margaritas on the planet. Extremely reasonable prices with top notch service that is so hard to find these days. Next party I organize I will simply call Tyler. Whether I need a bartender, chef, catering, etc - HighLife will be my only phone call. Thanks for everything!

f despite that it was thanksiving day, and she had her own family, Chef Aless catered my family's special day with superb attention to both the food, which was beyond delicious and plentiful, and presentation. She arrived early with a trolley full of delectable hors d'oeuvres, the best turkey ever baked, and containers full of great accompanying veggies. This was the first time I have ever needed outside catering, but the experience of having Chef Aless was so seamless, and the food was so perfect, that even if I have to invent an occasion, which I will, I know she could handle it with a touch of that marvelous French charm and expertise, and very little interference from me! I'm a cook, specifically a baker. but Chef Aless is a master, and everything was delivered expeditiously and promptly. And with heart... A truly wonderful experience. Thank you so much Alessandra. Alana put together a wonderful dinner for my father in law's 70th birthday. Each course was beautifully laid out and delicious. She also made a wonderfully unique cocktail to start off the festivities. She works very hard, has a lovely and calm demeanor during all of her prep and even found time to chat with our kids. Only area for improvement is a suggestion of proactive communication leading up to event, but otherwise, everything went really well.

You could not go wrong by choosing Harvest Specialty Catering! Jason and Stella took such amazing care of our guests, who were all family and close friends. They were extremely professional, prompt, courteous, and as hoped, the food was amazing. We chose Harvest Specialty Catering to cater our sons 1st Birthday and we had brunch: the omelette station was a huge hit and the chicken parm was amazing, as well as the rest of our meal. We will definitely be using them for future parties and highly recommend to anyone looking for a caterer that will not disappoint!

Doris and her staff did an OUTSTANDING job making sure that my 40th birthday party was perfect!! From the time we met and discussed my vision I felt comfortable in knowing that she would be able to see things through. Anytime I contacted Doris with questions, concern, or suggestions she was available to assist me. On the evening of my party Doris and her staff worked effortlessly to decorate and set up my venue. Everything came together just as I imagined. The food was so SUPERB that many of my guest still rave about how tasty It was. Every one left saying "NOW THAT WAS A GREAT PARTY"!! Thank you again to Doris and her staff for making my 40th Birthday Party one that myself and guest will never forget.

I had planned my bachelor party to be in the Hamptons during October. This was my first time out there and had no idea where to start. I definitely wanted to have a special dinner with my friends while still keeping it affordable. We were a group of 13 people. My friend recommended using F.I.G. Catering for my event and I’m so happy they did! From the beginning, Nick was so responsive and helpful. I didn’t know what would be good for this type of event and he had a ton of recommendations. He even offered to do something special and custom for my event. He made the set up process very easy and worry-free! Nick arrived promptly on the day of our event! He came prepared with an assistant to help him set up and work our event. Nick got to work immediately on our appetizers. He freshly prepared all of our delicious appetizers in the kitchen using fresh ingredients. We were able to socialize and enjoy the house while our food was being prepared. They would bring out our appetizers one by one and showcased each item on beautiful plating. I felt like a true King! For our appetizers, we had butternut squash crostinis, tuna poke. Chicken and waffle bao buns, grilled pear wrapped with jamon and the miso smoked halibut. Each appetizer was fantastic! It felt like there were freshly prepared at a 5 star restaurant. My guests keep raving on how fabulous it was to hang out and get served delicious food! Nick did such a great job at spacing out our meals. Shortly after eating our appetizers, we had the delicious shaved Brussels and fennel salad. It was chopped and prepared to perfection! Who would have thought a salad could be so delicious! We also had a wonderful pasta course. Some of us had the penne with grilled chicken and eggplant and some had the lobster tortellaci. Both dishes were excellent! For our entrees, we had a bunch of great options! Some of us had the seabass , Salmon and hangar steak. Being the bachelor boy, I got to taste it all! All of the entrees were so delicious! To top it all off, for dessert we had a doughnut with ginger ice cream. This was the perfect ending to our incredible meal. Overall, I would give Nick and F.I.G. Catering an 11 out of 10! Nick’s professionalism, responsiveness and work quality led me to having one of the best weekends of my life! I would recommend using him and F.I.G. for any event!

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

Robert catered a business event for clients and prospective clients that had 100 people pass through over the course of 2.5 hour event. We had a wide array of finger food and full on entrees and received many compliments from guests on the food which was terrific. The price was very competitive and the service excellent.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
