Ellen was instrumental in catering at our home for my wife's birthday event. Food was plentiful, varied and delicious. Ellen worked with our palate, our specific requirements (vegetarian) and home setup to provide an excellent spread for our us and our guests. She came up with creative ideas to add flavor and variety and worked extra hard to provide impeccable service. Both Ellen and her delicious food were stars at the party.

I have used the catering services of Juste Hors D'Oeuvres many times for both business and personal events. Obviously, I have never been disappointed. Not only is the food wonderful, the servers are professional as well as well groomed and refined. I recommend this company often and have never gotten negative feedback.

Perfect! I requested catering services very last minute since my previous caterer canceled and Chef chris came to my rescue! He was so helpful and accommodating and I felt relieved the second I spoke with him. The event was flawless and It was a blessing in disguise that the previous caterer canceled because I got to experience NY Catering Service. Can’t wait to do this again. Thanks!!

This is a first class professional catering service. You really do get what you pay for: not only was the food delicious, but Lauren and her team were superb: very sweet, but also very efficient, paying attention to every detail, and giving us precious advice when needed. Our bartender (whom we had hired separetly because we had a previous relationship with him) failed to show up and Lauren immediately and seamlessly fixed that glitch by re-organizing her staff and deploying 2 of them to tend bar. Every aspect of the service was very good. We cannot recommend them enough and will use them again. Thank you Lauren, Tony, John and all the others.

We were extremely happy with the catering services that Manjar provided for a small cocktail party to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday. Adolfo and his team were professional and attentive and went above and beyond to make the occasion special. The passed appetizers were delicious and presented beautifully. We can't thank Adolfo enough for his attention to detail and his personalized service that allowed us to enjoy the party and not have to worry about anything.

We cannot say enough good things about SGS catering, especially Chef Grant. We had about 80 guests and a limited budget. But he was very accommodating in working with us. Great communications all the way till the day of our event. We also had some guests bring in food as a partial potluck. The chefs were really helpful and quick in organizing everything. We also had a vegetarian guest who inquired about vegetarian options before dinner was served. When dinner was ready an hour later, the server found her in the crowd and served her a vegetarian plate (we had a buffet style). I also made a two tiered cake myself for the event as I like to bake. As I was getting ready to assemble a tiered cake for the first time, Chef Grant pulled out his great decoration skills and made my cake look beautiful! We cannot say enough thank you for all the great help! Last but not the least, the food was amazing! The guests were all talking about how much they liked it. We are very happy there was leftovers so we can keep enjoying the food for days. We would definitely go back to them again if we ever need catering for any other events. Thank you again SGS Catering for everything!

I met Erika and savored her cooking during a private week long health retreat in Hudson, NY. Erika's cooking was mouth watering, innovative and used local and mostly organic ingredients. All the participants also lost quite a few pounds that week while not feeling deprived and celebrating food! I strongly recommend Erika for catering, health retreats and teaching ....

I was planning a last minute 50th for my husband which I was planning on doing everything myself because it was so last minute. I decided to go with a BBQ even though I knew a family member would be at the grill all day and not be able to enjoy the party. During my planning, I went to a party that Joe was catering. I was so impressed with Joe that I went over and asked if he would be available for my date knowing it was a long shot. Of course he had other parties that day. However, after speaking to him for a while, he was sympathetic to my needs and asked me to give him a call that week and he will check to see if he can put together a team to work my party, but he wanted me to understand he would not be there personally. I understood and trusted his staff would do a good job. I called him that week. First let me start by saying Joe is the most friendly, stand up business man I have ever done business with. He was so helpful with planning my menu and giving me different ideas. Joe's team arrived, set up in 10 minutes and started cooking immediately. They came with some food already prepared so my guest could start while the grill was heating up. The food was delicious from the BBQ meats, the sides and the salads. Joe provided more than enough to serve people twice even three times plus I had left overs. The best part, Joe showed up to check on how everything was going which was not necessary because his staff was professional, friendly and experienced. Like I said, Joe's a great guy. When the crew left, everything was cleaned up and my left overs put to the side. I am still getting calls from my guests telling me what a great BBQ I had, complimenting the food and the staff. LCI Caterers saved me. Joe and his crew made my party a huge success. I will not only use Joe for any future BBQ parties but he will be my go to caterer for all my catering needs. Thanks again Joe.

Prior to working with Melissa, she was very responsive. She was comfortable responding over text, email and phone. She gave me ample time on the phone so that I could get to know her before coming to our house. Additionally, Melissa was patient as I tried to figure out the menu for the actual event. On the night of the event, Melissa came over to the house. We were staying at a rented home that had limited supplies. Melissa was not at all thrown off by this, and she had brought all of the materials she would need to cook with. While Melissa was happy to cook in the kitchen alone with her assistant, she was extremely social with the other members of the party (there were seven of us); and was happy to share what she was cooking, how she was doing it, and answering any questions people had. A mixed gender bachelorette party, Melissa was really able to understand the energy of the space, and was even willing to take pictures of our group before she left! The food she made was absolutely delicious and she was able to find a good balance between feeding everyone without having too much food left over. I would definitely hire again for another event!

Carol & Crew provided catering & delivery for our in home Christmas gather of about 30 folks. Given the order was on short notice and on a holiday, she was amazingly willing and receptive to work with us. 5 of s6 of the choices I'd rate as outstanding. Particularly awesome was the beef brisket (amazing), the BBQ ribs, mac and cheese and asparagus. The general chicken was very good and only the vegan spinach empenada's were a little less than expected (but then again, they were vegan -- no cheese!) I'd highly recommend T&C on all fronts and will certainly call on them again. Be careful not to over order, the "full" potions, while a good value, are ridiculously large -- we were eating leftovers throughout the holidays.

Owned by 2 very dynamic Austrians It's a thrill to see one part of the duo, Chef Albert preparing mouthwatering bits of artful compositions amongst others a delicious pulled,fork-tender braised Shortrib in an artisanal Brioche bun, served with horseradish cream and crispy onions; if you have a sweet tooth a must is the Apfelstrudel,(apple strudel) a layered pastry filled with thinly slices of crisp apples, sprinkled with powdered sugar... all this lushness is served by a professional staff, who have impeccable timing working with ease through a large crowd of hungry guests.... JP and his team were fantastic and we look forward to working with him again. He catered an event for 120 guests the night before our wedding so it was pretty important to us that it went right! The food was delicious, we still have friends telling us how much they loved it. He really goes above and beyond to ensure a good experience and provided us with many more dishes than we had anticipated. I would absolutely recommend him.

When our office of 140 people moved to White Plains, NY we were on a mission for a new catering service that would accommodate our executives and associates. Upon a Google search we found Savory Gourmet and decided to give them a try. It's been five years and I'm happy that we are still using savory for events both large and small and the quality and presentation are still perfect. If you want really delicious food that not only tastes good but that also looks good, contact Claudia at Savory! Her and the team are fantastic...plus they offer gluten free and can meet any special needs or themes you may have. Everyone is always impressed and we are not easily pleased. Thank you Savory Gourmet for delivering 5 star food! I highly recommend them!

It was an amazing experience having Milt, Janet and their crew as our caterers. They arrived early to set up and be prepared for our guest. The food was AMAZING!!!! I cannot get over their stuffed mushrooms, those delicious little chicken quesadilla, OMG the shrimp cocktail...I can sit here and name every single dish we ordered and tell the world what an amazing experience it was for my taste buds and my guest will say the same. I will continue to work with Studio Event Staffing for all my future events. Not only were they professional, they were very friendly and warm--they have an awesome team put together!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
