Lauren and her team were amazing. I hosted a party for 37 in our loft space and from the planning to the execution the event was flawless. Lauren is experienced enough to be extremely accommodating while offering a wealth of experience and suggestions when needed. She followed up on all the details throughout the planning period and when the night arrived everything was exactly as promised. Her team was helpful, friendly, and professional. They were a pleasure to work with. Lauren and the bartender even created a special drink for the occasion that was the perfect accompaniment. Several guests asked for Lauren's information and everyone raved about the food. I recommend Bacco Catering without hesitation.

Aldolfo was the ultimate professional from the very first interaction. Our party was a huge success mostly because Aldoflo and his helper made everyone comfortable (especially my husband and I). The food was perfect! Delicious, appetizingly presented, appropriately portioned and hot foods hot, cold foods cold!

My pal and I hired Kendall and Gerry to cater our husbands' joint 50th birthday party in Bedford in 2008, to rave reviews from guests. They've since catered two graduation parties for me and another 50th for a friend. Such wonderful attention to detail, from designing signature cocktails to selecting a personalized menu with the freshest locally sourced food. They make sure that not only the guest of honor and guests had a good time, but the hosts as well. Most impressive to me--Kendall joined her staff in surprising our son at his ballgame themed graduation party wearing Yankees tees and caps--despite being Red Sox fans themselves. :-) Every event they've catered has been lovely from start to finish. I cannot recommend highly enough!

Five stars are not enough! We used Sullivan Catering for our daughter's college graduation party in our backyard. Everything was tremendous - the food, friendly service, set-up and clean-up, absolutely everything. All our guests raved about everything on the menu from the appetizers right through to the deserts. The greatest proof is that many of our guests wanted his card so they could use him in the future. Tom was a pleasure to deal with throughout the planning process and on the day of the event. He knows his business, is thoroughly professional and down to earth. No pressure, impossible to read contracts or set menus, just great flexibility and a willingness to offering common sense suggestions. In addition, his prices were very reasonable compared to other quotes we received. As a result the party was a huge success and a great value for the money. He also wrapped all the leftovers, clearly marked them, reorganized our refrigerator and placed them in there without being asked. By the time Tom and his wonderful crew left, our kitchen was cleaner than when they started! We've done a lot of events over the years in our professional and personal lives. Sullivan catering is one the very best we've ever work with. We will definitely be using them again. Joe and Debbie

Hiring Ron and Miracle Catering for my wedding on 9/10/16 was the best decision we could have made. From the very start, Ron was very professional and quick to respond to all questions and inquiries. He set up a taste testing before the wedding at my parent's house and from that moment on, we were sold. The food was amazing! I never was that excited about a salad before. Ron was also flexible with planning a menu around our needs and style as we wanted an appetizer/station only wedding that was heavily vegetarian. Ron provided helpful suggestions to make the menu diverse and well-rounded. Ron and his team were able to manage our difficult venue setting that had little indoor space and no kitchen. The day of our wedding went so smoothly mainly due to the staff at Miracle Catering. We rented linens through them and Ron's team did a beautiful job setting up the room without any directions. The staff were so friendly and helpful the entire night. The food was beautifully displayed. All of our guests raved about the food that included brie and roasted apple crostini, tacos, mini burgers, tomato soup shooters with grilled cheese, dumplings, mini baked potatoes with goat cheese just to name a few! We had a pasta station and an Asian station (that had a beef/chicken and a tofu stir fry option). We also used Ron's baker and the cakes were delicious and went perfectly with the ice cream sundae bar. My only regret is that I did not eat more at my wedding and did not take home a doggie bag. I am actively seeking another opportunity to hire Miracle Catering again and would highly recommend them for any event.

It was an amazing experience having Milt, Janet and their crew as our caterers. They arrived early to set up and be prepared for our guest. The food was AMAZING!!!! I cannot get over their stuffed mushrooms, those delicious little chicken quesadilla, OMG the shrimp cocktail...I can sit here and name every single dish we ordered and tell the world what an amazing experience it was for my taste buds and my guest will say the same. I will continue to work with Studio Event Staffing for all my future events. Not only were they professional, they were very friendly and warm--they have an awesome team put together!!

Chef Matt catered my dinner party and it was absolutely fabulous. I host dinner parties often and Chef Matt exceeded my expectation! I was mostly impressed by the quality of the dishes -- some of the best BBQ I've ever had. I would highly recommend Chef Matt and I will be sure to call him for my next event. Thank you Chef Matt for an exceptional dinner.

Germaine is the best caterer and designer I’ve ever had! Her food is so good that I can not even put my fork down. She designed the party perfectly and turned it into a breathtaking upscale party. Everything from the chair covers to the napkins were designed perfectly. I could not have asked for a better caterer. She was kind and sweet and made my whole day.

Chef Gerry has been coming to our home once a week for over a year. He is incredibly talented (any sauce he makes is divine!) and very professional. He always makes sure everything is clean before he leaves. He's even very nice with my children and explains to them what he is doing so they are learning also. Highly recommended.

My event was July 7,2018 Tiffany was AMAZING! My event was so last minute, and I was already cringing to find a caterer; but then I found Tiff’s Soul Food. I loved how she definitely took her time and understood what I wanted. The Mac and cheese which is my favorite was one of my nights biggest hits. To this day my guests are still texting me about the food. I will be using her for future events! Thanks again Tiff!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
