Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Setting up a safe consultation or appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic starts with comparing local professionals online. Message or call the handyman to ask about performing a consultation over the phone or, better yet, a video call. This will allow the handyman to assess the problem without increasing the risk of transmission by visiting your home. If the service is essential and the handyman needs to enter your home, you’ll need to take stringent safety measures for the visit. Discuss temporary fixes if possible, and come up with a plan for safety and digital payment.

How can I find out if a handyman is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Depending on the service needed, a handyman may be considered essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can check by visiting your city or state’s government website. In addition, CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage offers national guidelines for determining essential services. Their page delineates 16 essential infrastructure sectors that can continue to operate during the pandemic. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a handyman when social distancing?

If you hire a handyman, stay 6 feet away from the handyman at all times. If you have an indoor emergency and it’s considered an essential service, take extra social distancing precautions with your handyman. Do not make physical contact, stay at least 6 feet from the handyman, and exchange payment through digital services instead of cash or check. Talk with your handyman and agree on a plan in advance.

Can I use digital payments to pay for handyman services?

Many handymen accept digital payments for work done repairing homes. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need for social distancing, this trend is likely going to increase. Handymen often accept payment through popular platforms like Paypal, Google Pay, Zelle, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Consult with the handyman before you begin work to ensure you’ll be able to conduct the transaction safely and in compliance with official guidelines.

Does a handyman need to enter my home?

In many cases, a handyman will not need to enter your home for outdoor repairs, but they’ll likely need to enter your home for indoor repairs. With the pandemic’s associated safety guidelines, it’s important that this only occurs for absolutely essential projects. Avoid any physical contact with the handyman if this is the case. Sanitize surfaces, and conduct payment through a digital platform like PayPal or Venmo. Be sure to contact your handyman and develop a plan before the job commences.

Is it worth it to hire a handyman?

It’s worth it to hire a handyman in many cases. For example, you should hire a handyman when the project’s size and scope make it challenging to complete by yourself. These projects may include major home remodels or additions, foundation work or electrical/plumbing/HVAC-related tasks. However, make sure the handyman has the proper credentials or license to perform the necessary work.

You might also want to hire a handyman if a contractor’s price is too high. Handymen often charge less than general contractors, but contractors typically have the required license to perform certain tasks.

And, lastly, think about the complexity of the job and the cost of future repairs. It’s worth it to hire a handyman when the project is complex. Doing something incorrectly can wind up costing more than hiring the pro in the first place.

Do handymen offer remote or virtual services?

Because a handyman needs to be physically present to perform work, they have not traditionally offered remote or virtual services. However, if you come across handyman profiles that state they offer remote services, message the handymen to see what those services include.

Confer with your handyman to see if consulting over video calls is possible. The professional may be able to walk you through performing basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other types of repairs around the house. Compare the handymen in your area side-by-side online, and ask whether they’re willing to help remotely.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. I am disappointed with the work that was done on our home and feel this handyman was dishonest when he said he could complete the job. Our situation is worse due to the work completed.

Corey was amazingly helpful and personable. He fixed the problem, and also gave me an education in how the piping worked along the way. His prices are more than fair, and he was excellent about communicating every step of the way. I will definitely be contacting him again if I need a handyman!

Hedgehog was great! Their handyman, Gavin, was efficient, flexible, friendly, and ready to help us get everything done. I handed him a task list and he knocked out each item with precision and speed, requiring little to no supervision. We're definitely going to ask them back to help out on other small projects around the office.

Scott was the perfect "get 'er done" handyman. He just came over and I threw a bunch of different tasks- including a pesky million part ikea wire thing- at him, and he approached each mini project with expertise and care. It was such a productive morning- He even mounted a giant TV in my apartment! We already have discussed what we are going to do at our next appointment. Woohoo!

Keith Rose came in as a handyman on a project and did a great job. I had several small unfinished projects such as changing locks, repairing a bathroom ventilation fan, troubleshooting a couple electrical issues, replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, repairing closet doors... Very professional, brought his own tools and went right to work. What Keith quoted was what we paid. Very professional and I recommend you call him today!

John was great to work with. He assembled the furniture that we requested and even took on another project that we hadn't planned on. He's also great about offering other services and recommendations. He was kind enough to haul out a bunch of trash and recycling from the packing material for the furniture since our building can't handle that volume of disposal. We'd definitely hire him again as a handyman, and would consider reaching out to him for other skills as well.

I had hired Corey to replace doorknobs in my home, and when he got to my house, I dragged him into the back yard to show him where I wanted him to lay the PVC pipe for a water drip system that I was looking for someone to install. He said, "Wait...you want me to install this? I said, "yes, is this a problem?" "No," he said laughing. "You hired me to install your doorknobs. I am happy to to the PVC work too." Suddenly a project that I was having problems with got solved instantly. Corey impressed me with his deep knowledge of the handyman's art. I will definitely use his talents in the future.

Corey was the best! My closet project was completed with such great TLC. He’s so professional and went above and beyond to fix all my needs to perfection!! I’m so thankful that I cherry picked him from Thumbtack and I will always use him for my handyman needs in the future; as well as recommend him to all my friends and family. My closet was totally busted and he made it stronger than ever (extra L brace reinforcement) and removed my clunky closet doors and the runners on the bottom; it really looks so clean and truly A+ work. He had suggestions to make it even prettier and also wasn’t pushy at all about them, just intelligent and I’m already starting a wish list and will be hiring him again to upgrade. Thank you Corey for all you did!! Made my life easier and I appreciate your time and quality work!!

Ralph saved the day for me! My original handyman bailed on me the day of so I reached out to other businesses and Ralph was so quick to message me back. Turns out he was able to come check out my projects same day. I had him do two small projects - repair my kitchen faucet and remove/install a toilet. He did a great job! He’s a really great guy and super easy to work with. He was clear about the work and price. Even though he wasn’t the cheapest option, he was the most responsive and professional... plus, you get what you pay for and I got great work. He actually saved me some money because he was able to repair my faucet instead of automatically replacing it with the one I had on hand just in case. I will definitely be using PDX Top Finishes again!

I hired Sergio for handyman services to install ceiling storage in my garage and to install 2 chandeliers. He quoted me 6 hours to install all 3 items. He assured me that he had done this before many times and it should be no problem. He showed up a half hour late. It took him 4 hours to just install the ceiling storage which he installed incorrectly and left dirty hand prints all over my newly painted garage. Since it took so long for him to install the ceiling storage he said he would come back 4 days later to install the 2 chandeliers which wasn’t convenient for me but I agreed. 20 mins before his appt time he canceled and when I asked when he could reschedule he left me hanging and stopped all communication. I think it is completely unprofessional how he handled the situation. He clearly didn’t have the experience to install my ceiling storage correctly and didn’t even have the courtesy to clean up the mess he left behind. Extremely disappointing service.

The dude returned a diamond ring. That's right. Blayne dropped by my office to pick up his check after he crushed through the handyman todo list I gave him. He tells me and my wife, "Ya and I found this under the closet carpet when I was replacing it" --and he holds up a 50 year old diamond ring that was my wife's mother's wedding ring. Blayne is a breath of fresh air in today's world. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aside from being super honest, he cranked out this todo list in one evening that probably would have taken me a couple days: 1) Replace Kitchen Faucet: One lever kitchen on the faucet for both the hot and cold. Note: new faucet provided Replace 2) First Floor Toilet Seat: Note: new toilet set provided 3) Fix hanging clothes rack in master bedroom Note: Plastic hook hanging end provided 4) Outside Missing Tile on outside fence by waterfall Note: Tile provided but not the tile mud to stick it on. 5) Replace 2nd floor sink drain top stopper and unplug drain 6) Replace 2nd floor bathroom tub plug and unplug drain 7) Replace the weather stripper on the outdoor red front door that I painted on. 8) Attempt to glue up the kitchen cabinet edges that are pealing off (not sure this is possible..) 9) Replace the carpet in the front closet with darker carpet (so it does not look so dirty). 10) Put the automatic garage door hooked back on the track 11) Replace the mailbox with a new mail box. Note: mailbox will be provided -----------------------------------------------------------------{NOTE: I forget to get the mailbox for Blayne so he drives to home depot and sends me picture options of which one he should buy. So awesome.}
