Sherman Keller did a fantastic job replacing my wood shake roof with asphalt shingles. He also replaced my enclosed porch roof, which had ant damage and loads of rotten wood. Sherman showed me the amount of damage and explained how he would repair and replace it with new wood. He also took the two skylights apart and replaced all the old seals with fresh sealant. I am very happy with his professionalism and timely response to get the work done between storms. I would recommend Sherman Construction to anyone who needs work completed properly. In fact, I mentioned him to my neighbor who needs some roof repairs and they are getting a quote from him. He also was very diligent in cleaning up after each day and at the end of the job.

Dan removed a large skylight and had to close it in including adding shingles on roof and finishing off the bedroom ceiling to match what was already there. Great job done overall. Cleaned up when done. Will keep in mind for future remodeling.

They were awesome, from the first meeting with the salesman to final installation. The salesman was very knowledgeable, he answered all my questions and gave me multiple options to chose from. It was nice being happy with the choices I made. Then the customer service people were great. I have a very difficult schedule and they worked with me. The installers were on time and very quick and did quality work. They cleaned up excellently and even dealt with my crazy dog. I had a new roof installed, siding, soffit, windows and doors replaced. They were so great to deal and quality products that I used then three times. The roof siding, soffit, and three windows, then 9 windows then the windows were so good , I also replaced 9 more that were only 10 years old. The price was very affordable considering all the estimates I got. I recommend them 100%.

Gilbert and his crew came in like a small army. They started my roof at 7:30 and the entire job was done by 4 pm. This included removal of the old roof and installation of new plywood in a few areas. They cleaned up afterwards and left my yard in even better shape than when they arrived. I also could not find a better price for my new roof. I can't think of anything they could improve upon. Just top notch in every way.

Four seasons temporarily managed 3 rental properties for me while I was in London on business. My tenants in one unit experienced a roof failure that resulted in a great deal of drywall damage to the second and first floor. Four seasons was on site within an hour. They tarped the roof, and the following day effected a repair to the roof, and had the drywall removed, interior of walls treated and drywall rehung, taped and painted all within the next two days. Their quick reaction saved me from further damage, and future mold issues. They have since done several repairs on other properties and I have had no further complaints from my tenants. They are always quick to respond. A great asset to any property owner.

I am so happy with all that was done at my new home. Vincent and his crew replaced my roof in one day. It looks great and there were no signs that they were ever at the house except for the beautiful roof. They also installed pavers on both sides of my small driveway in Homestead Columbus NJ . I will recommend them to all my friends and neighbors. A great job !! was done and they were a great company to work with.

A-1 General Contractors, LLC recently replaced my roof after it was weathered and damaged. It did not take a while for Ed and his crew to get to my house. One of the things that most impressed me was the way his crew treated my property. Each night they picked up and swept the area. They even had a man whose job was to keep the site clean as they completed the job. My home has a complex system of roofing material including asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and composite roofing so the job took two days. Each day before they finished they made sure that the roof was still water tight. I also talked to his crew and asked him how long they have worked for Robert and most told me multiple years. This speaks well of A-1 General Contractors, LLC ability to train and maintain his help. At the end of day two Robert came by my job site and told his people that the way they a prior contractor had flashed part of my roof and some items on the previous siding project completed by another contractor was not correct. They took the time to correct other issues that was done by another contractor. That single incident told me that Robert has high standards and expects his crew to adhere to these same high standards. As a result of my experience I have no reservations in giving A-1 General Contractors, LLC my full recommendation. It was worth the rate to hire the best and they are very reasonable with their pricing.

5 Stars! Absolutely a wonderful company to work with, after speaking to the office manager and the estimating gentleman, whom came to our home to give a free estimate, for our roofing job, we chose the NIVA Group for our roofing and skylight replacement needs. Please note: I am a contractors wife, so I definitely researched the work that needed to be done, my husband did not have the time right now to do our own roof. He and I both agreed that their proposal was spot on clear and concise, and an affordable price too, we chose them over 5 other roofing companies, the NIVA Group definitely proved they are experienced, professional, knowledgeable, and honest. We had a great crew of men come out that did our job in 1 day. I was here, and the job went well, clean up done to my satisfaction, roof looks great! love it! My husband got up on roof after roof was completed, and was impressed as well, job well done! We are glad we chose them, we both would highly recommended using the NIVA Group for your roofing needs, we are very happy with the results! Thank you NIVA Group!!

My entire experience with E&K was wonderful. They quickly contacted me on Thumbtack and set up an in-person meeting within a few days of my post. Their estimate came in well below the others I received, and I felt more comfortable with the personalized care, workmanship and materials they used than the other roofers I considered. Pete and Jeff are especially kind and easy to work with! They removed my slate roof and replaced it with asphalt shingles in one day. They cleaned up, were courteous and professional, and I will recommend E&K to anyone looking for quality roofing at a reasonable price. Thank you E&K!

It was a pleasure dealing with Alec and AV Contracting. He immediately came out when I first contacted him to replace the roof on my Shed that was almost thirty years old. His price was competitive and well within my budget. He showed me different samples as well as made recommendations for the type of shingles and capping I should replace the roof with and venting for the roof/shed. Most important, the job/roof when completed what excellent - Meticulously installed with impressive installation. It took him one day to complete the job. Another note, that impressed me was that Alec was friendly and approachable. No matter when I called or text him, he was happy to assist me or answer any questions. When I replace the roof in my house, I will not bother contacting any one else- Alec and AV Contracting have my business in the future.

Take one old garage with a unique and problematic water runoff channel design, and questionable shingle work done less than 10 years ago. Brought in J.Story Roofing, Inc: Problems solved. The water channel leak problem was overdue for some outside-of-the-box thinking because the same repair approach that had been taken for many years didn't cut it. Jeff's proposed solution was pretty innovative and impressive. He pointed out the problems with the previous shingle work on that side of the roof and recommended removal and replacement. I figured why not do the entire roof? I had a very fair and competitive estimate that evening. Job completed in one day within a week of first contact. The roof looks great, and it looks like we won't be worrying about a water runoff problem and leaking anymore. Jeff and crew are a punctual, flexible, professional, neat, and affable bunch of guys. I got them to sign on for some gutter installation and main roof repair jobs.

I've been using the same roofing company for over 20 years and decided to try Mr Washington our for a new rubber roof install. Excellent job... he was courteous, reassuring, on time, always answered my phone calls and the price was right. He even threw in some extra's at no additional cost. I will definitely recommend Washington Roofing & Contracting to our neighbors, who are always asking me for recommendations. T. Cheek on Gilbert st

Everything from the first phone call to the completed repair is smooth and easy with DVC. We have a slate roof and it needs annual maintenance as slate roofs do. We have also called about other issues pertaining to the outside of our home. Dave is very knowledgeable and great at explaining what could be causing the problem. And always gives options if needed. Getting to the root of the issue to make sure everything is done correctly. We completely trust DVC. They are our first and only call anytime we have a roofing, siding, and gutter needs. Beautiful works. Awesome people.

Todd was very responsive from the time of my first inquiry right though until job completion. I had a new roof and 18 windows installed. His prices were the best around for what I needed All work was performed on-time and faster than expected. Todd is very professional and a pleasure to deal with. Everyone remarked that it was one of the neatest roofing jobs they had ever seen. Not a nail or a shingle in sight. I couldn't believe how spotless my house was inside and out. Would recommend him to anyone who asked. I will be using Todd Miller Roofing and Siding angain. No need for me to shop around having found a company like this. Thank you Todd

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
