3rd party HVAC company came out for service. SBPH does not actually provide the service. I was quoted $79 for a diagnostic. After 1.5 hours, problem not solved but bad control board suspected. I was charged $150. Turns out $79 is for first 30 minutes only. I was not informed of this. I was supposed to get a call about a quote for board which never came. All in all I had to call Oliver Heating and cooling. More expensive, but upfront, and fixed problem two days later.

Set the bar for service level. We are so happy we found Marion and his crew to help us with our HVAC cleaning. So courteous it was confusing. He called to explain his estimate. He answered all of our questions. Then called day before appointment to confirm. Then called on way to my home. Then took shoes off when arrived. Then explained what they were going to do. Did it. Then cleaned up. Then charged us what he said he would charge. And the work was fantastic. Very good people. Thank you!!!

Where do I begin? Benny EXPERTLY replaced my residential heating unit, fixing my 3 previous HVAC guys' mistakes and shortcuts in the process, the biggest of which was a huge condensation problem slowly destroying my chimney, this without the need of installing an expensive chimney liner ☺. And when he discovered air being vented over fiberglass house insulation - a big no-no - he spent at least 3-4 hours removing the insulation at no extra charge, just to do the job right, and because of his concern for our health. He also installed a central AC unit at the same time, which I LOVE. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the extra intake adjustable vent he suggested and installed near the unit in the basement, which recirculates cold/cool air from the basement to the rest of the house when I open this vent and run the fan only function on the unit, cooling the house on those warm not hot days, making the need of running the actual AC unit often unnecessary and saving me $$$. And after he reconfigured the duct work some, so that the reusable hepa filters he provided to us fit snugly in the system, our allergy symptoms immediately became a thing of the past ☺☺☺. He also asked me what kind of thermostat I would like, and installed the perfect thermostat for me, and also color-coordinated it to my decor no less. Beautiful! I love it. And when my water heater recently gave up the ghost, Benny rearranged his schedule to replace it asap, along with adding shut-off valves going to the water heater (perfect), another expert installation of another fine quality unit, these jobs WELL WORTH their very reasonable costs...I've never written a review before for anything, but felt compelled to sing Benny's praises. From now on he's the only HVAC/plumber for me. Do not think twice!

Great service, spent the time to discuss some specifics about my new ecobee3 thermostat and even assisted with its configuration. Also shared some general information about the use and maintenance concerns for my HVAC system. Satisfied with the experience and the attention, where none of the other established companies in my immediate area were willing to do this project all having the contingency that I use only their pre-approved smart thermostats.

Daren Linder Repairs did an excellent job fixing my chimney. Daren and his friend worked fast, they were punctual and solved all problems for a very fair price. After they fixed my chimney I asked them to repair my A/C and additional HVAC work. They made sure that everything is working and promised to come back if anything requires additional work. Their price was good, they were very honest and didn't try to sell me the whole system like other companies. The house passed inspection and the inspector was very pleased with the results. I highly recommend them and will hire them in the future.

Used thumbtack for the first time and selected JC Mechanical to repair our boiler. Jason came when promised and was able to complete the repair. He didn't try to sell us a bunch of unneeded services. He was straight to the point and delivered as promised. We will be using him again in the future for our Hvac & plumbing needs. We recommend this company.

I am an extremely satisfied customer and am so happy to refer Phil absolutely. My boiler stopped working late Friday afternoon and I called a few repairmen referred to me, all of who had high fees and didn't know when they could come out and the temperature was forecasted in the 20's that night. I went on Thumbtack and received 3 quotes and Phil's was not just the lowest, but the most professional out of all 3 quotes. He explained everything in his quote and when I called him, Phil was so patient and kind explaining everything that it could be, and that he could be here by 8:00pm at NO extra charge! And his fee was already so low! He came early, had shoe covers with him (which impressed me so much), diagnosed the problem from the bottom up - not the other way around as most HVAC repairmen do. He even went to Lowe's during the repair at no cost to me. Wow, such dedication. My boiler was repaired in about 2 hours and I was thrilled! Not just because it was fixed, but because of how professional, clean, thorough and affordable Phil was and that I knew I'd be a customer for life and will be referring him to many people. He was a pleasure to do business with, friendly and professional, and I couldn't be happier with his service and level of excellence. Thank you Phil!

I have used EP210 for various properties in Philadelphia from installing a gas heating furnace to improving the heat in specific rooms. There is no problem that escapes these guys. They always find the problem. What is most impressive is their honesty and integrity. Sometimes an issue can be solved by routine maintenance. They just take care of it and charge me the small fee for the maintenance. There have been times where I expected to pay several hundred dollars and ended up paying a fraction. Rey and his crew always finds the problem and charges appropriately. I never get a surprise high bill like I use to get in the past from other HVAC companies. I would send EP210 to my grandmother's house and she doesn't know English. Good gas heating specialists are hard to come by. This is one of the best.

Adams HVAC was the fifth contact I made to get an estimate. I had gone on the web to get information about a central air system in my house. In doing my homework I came across Johnathan and he was totally professional when he came to my house to give me the initial estimate. Johnathan was totally on time, punctual when the work was started during the same week. The quality of the work supports the value of the money spent. He even came back the next week to check and see if the unit was operating properly and cleaned up some of the wires that he determined need to be encased. Would use this company for future projects. FABULOUS!!!!!

Greenway solutions was by far, the best recent home improvement decision we've made. We used them for our hvac system and had an incredible experience. Our consultation as thorough, honest, and reassuring. We were able to use the promotional deals offered and they honestly beat all of the other companies we had come out for an estimate. When the hvac system was actually installed, the techs were extremely professional and thorough. Our tech took the time to show us how to use our new thermostat and taught us all of the science behind what was actually going on. It was such an amazing experience going with this company. We weren't even sure if this was the year for us to get our hvac installed, but felt so confident with Greenway that we didn't want to wait. We we also be using this company for maintinence and tuneups. When it is time to get our second unit installed for the third floor, we'll most likely be contacting Greenway again. Best decision ever. If you're on the fence, trust me, you won't regret using his company. Honest and hardworking through and through.

The technician Steven Yan, was excellent. He could relate to me wanting the best financial option and not just upselling me on things. He went above and beyond in various ways and I applaud him for the level of customer service he provided. Being in a field of install & service technicians, I know how important it is to "wow" the customer. Steven, certainly did this.

So glad I met Al and E B Williams! I had met several HVAC companies that gave me quotes. They just came in unprofessional, barely looked at my system, and threw quotes on the table. I was so uncomfortable with all of them. I didn't know the differences in equipment, qualify, or anything. Al and E B Williams walked me through the entire process! He explained to me how the system works, pros and cons of the systems, why some cost more than others, different financing options etc. The system runs amazing! I have never felt more comfortable in my home. I wish I didn't waste time even contacting the other companies and called Al and E B Williams first!

Mr. Alfriend was very helpful, well manner, and professional when it came to fixing my air conditioning unit. He was informative about what was causing the problem and was able to fix the problem right away at a reasonable price compare to what contractors would have charge me. I gave him another call about my plumbing issues. He came right in change out my sink and toilet. He was even kind enough to show me how it needed to be done so next time I'll be able to do it on my own. I would recommend Mr. Alfriend to anybody. He's a handyman you can depend on to get the job done right and on time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
